Arriving in Congress in 1993, Congressman Clyburn was elected co-president of his freshman class.
Upon graduation from SC State College, Clyburn was hired as a social studies teacher at Charles A.
Brown High School in Charleston, South Carolina.
Clyburn was elected the U.S. representative for South Carolina's sixth Congressional District, becoming the state's first African-American to serve as Congress since 1897.
Since 2023, he has also served as House Assistant Democratic Leader.
His most difficult plan was to build a $150 million bridge across Lake Marion.
It was difficult because the leaders of SC wanted to see the money spent another way.
Clyburn is considered a power broker in South Carolina.
