A pilot project offering free legal representation to noncitizen immigrants is underway.

When Governor J.B. Pritzker signed the Defenders for All Act in August 2021, it was the culmination of a years-long fight by advocacy organizations to provide access to free legal representation in deportation proceedings to non-citizens. Public defenders in Cook County say they have since taken on over a dozen cases free of charge
