Filmed live at the Kimo Theater in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
(rock music) Tonight's band from Nashville, Tennessee, Cordovas.
(cheering and applause) - We got the Cordovas!
(loud cheering and applause) - Yeah!
(loud cheering, whistling and applause) (upbeat Americana music) When you leave for the wintertime Call me, I'll be at home with the phone at my side These Midwest women will keep me company Come first freeze and the changing of the leaves Don't forget who you left in this bed All the roads that you traveled in my head I'm the one The one who needs you tonight When you find a big enough sky To hold me only or whatever you need I'll be up north Where the wind cuts you in two Yeah, you know it's home Ain't nothin' I can do To keep you around, babe, I've begged before Ain't no use, you always know what's it for I'm the one The one who needs you tonight The one who needs you tonight (instrumental break) (cheering and applause) (guitar tuning) (guitar music) Caught the light like a camera And the night just faded gray You're throwing me away - The band is, you're looking at the band - Yeah, okay.
- And then whoever else wants to fight their way in is welcome But you have to do as much work as we do.
- [Ken] What are some of your inspirations musically?
- American folk music, and anything that's American folk music is sort of what I was into.
- [Joe] I basically give all the credit to just being from North Carolina.
- [Ken] Yeah.
- If you have relatives from the country, especially, you get exposed to a lot of crucial music.
The younger that you're exposed to it and the deeper and the closer it is to you, the more it's yours.
- I had to learn about folk music in the library.
- Des Moines, man.
- Des Moines Public Library?
Fade away - [Joe] Lucca, his band was opening up for me in Des Moines.
He found me in Nashville.
He showed me his songs, they're super good.
Coming from what I had just done, the full process of trying to be a solo guy, definitely trying to find some guys who could write and play the guitar better than me.
You never said goodbye (loud cheering and applause) (upbeat Americana music) This town's a drag No drugs, the heat's on and it's dried up Mad cops draw guns Flat tops kill buzz Ain't it a drag?
No smoke, straight-laced, no joke My last good lover is gone You let me know if it's going around Keep your ear to the ground, let me know what you found Let me know what you found, oh let me know Binging me up, you're bringing me down I'm tired of waiting around Though I don't care if you drive slow I can walk there Who knows who's holding?
Who else 'bout to throw in Wide-eyed like a ray gun It's a fine life if you stay young I'm all smiles, about to see one It's all right (instrumental break) You let me know if it's going around Get your ear to the ground, let me know what you found Let me know what you found, oh let me know Don t brin me down (guitar solo) Oh, this town's a drag No love, too cool Froze up, highbrow Nose up, bring some, oh if he shows up And now, well, you let me know what's going around Keep your ear to the ground, let me know what you found Just let me know what you found Oh, let me know (cheering and applause) - Which town is a drag?
- This town's a drag.
- Which one is it?
You.
- Nashville.
- Is it?
- Of course.
- Oh.
- No, I don't know.
It's whichever town you don't wana be in - Yeah, right.
It moves.
- But you know what I mean.
At the end of the song he says he just misses his girl.
It's the same old song as all of them.
Embedded in there is like, it won t matter what kind of palace you're at.
If you miss the person you want to be with the most, it's gonna be a drag.
Hello, Mama, it's Kara Lee I've come to stay, that's if you have me I brought my boy and we barely survive The last time you seen me was a better time I cried just as much as I could Well, we roll on the old dog Barreling down in the wind and the rain And we drove all night long We drove all night long All I own was just these things All else was lost.
I ve got nothin to bring Don't mind my face, it was all a mistake Billy said he put his ass on the bottom of the lake I cried just as much as I could When we rode on the old dog Barreling down in the wind and the rain In the early morning fog In the early morning fog (instrumental break) Said hello, Mama It's Kara Lee Do you got any love left for me?
I brought my love I brought my faith and my cross To help me get the things that you said I lost I cried just as much as I could When we rode on the old dog Barreling down in the wind and the rain And we drove all night long Though I tried just as much as I could It's the same old song Barreling down in the wind and the rain We just couldn't hold on Trying to hold on Trying to hold on Trying to hold on (cheering and applause) (upbeat Americana music) Yeah, your song comes on like a cure And you remember who you were before How many times has music saved your soul?
You're always running You can never quit Time to forgive yourself, time to forget You spend all the rest of your time just losing control I know all the roads from Memphis to Muscle Shoals Singing all the fallen angels of rock and roll Once moonlight had you singing in your sleep Wandering the alleys in your own defeat With eyes about as crazy as a crow The years kept coming like a rain in a storm And some nights you can't even get warm Well, loneliness is the only song you know I know all the roads from Memphis to Muscle Shoals All the fallen angels of rock and roll All the roads from Memphis to Muscle Shoals All the fallen angels of rock and roll Rock and roll (guitar solo) Your song came on like a cure And you remember what you were before How many times did music save you?
How many times did music save you?
How many times did music save your soul?
I know all the roads from Memphis to Muscle Shoals (audience clapping rhythmically) All the fallen angels of rock and roll I know all the roads from Memphis to Muscle Shoals Singing all the fallen angels of rock and roll Oh, rock and roll (instrumental break) (cheering and applause) - The harmonies are so damn good.
- [Joe] We all work on it a lot.
Kelsey's the best singer of the three of us.
But as far as the harmonies being embedded into the music, that's just part of it.
You have to sing in Cordovas.
Gaze on the skyline phase His eyes like blazing coals - [Joe] I had a jazz club in LA.
It was packed all the time.
You know, after the course of two years, I was starting to see everything.
These little subtle signs, musical signs, hints.
The rarest thing is not to improvise rhythmically, to improvise harmonically.
Watching those guys for two years and studying was just like, that's the only way to play.
The night won t last All this loneliness will fade It'll fade away It'll fade - [Joe] Improvising harmonies is the peak of improvisation, in my opinion.
Now, in all my bands all coming up and like the guys I was playing with on TV and everything, they could do it like it was nothing.
When you see us do it, it'll be a very simple version of it.
One person might hold their note the same, and you'll hear a little tension.
Oh, because the sun sets fast Yeah, the night won't last All this loneliness will fade It will fade away It'll fade away (audience applauds) - As an audience member, you gotta work too.
You gotta be with them to find that moment where it all clicks and the throttle opens up, and you get this special moment that never has happened before.
- Right, if the boys can do it.
Hey, now!
Well, you guys are standing up, so you can sing along on this one.
Since y'all's.
(sighs) Since y'all stretched out.
I was riding out the storm, waiting on the sun Till the sky clears up and all the rain is done On a lonesome road mile after mile When I think of you, I start to smile, yeah You gimme that high kind of feeling And I don't wanna come down Yeah, you gimme that high kind of feeling That's how it goes.
(mid-tempo Americana music) Bring it all back home like an old country revival Feel it deep down in your bones like a welcome arrival Open up your heart And let love go through the door Open up your mind That's what the damn thing's for And you can give yourself just a little bit Of high kind of feeling And I don't wanna come down You give me that high kind of feeling I don't wanna come down Yeah, when you coming back?
When will you arrive?
Oh, you're trying to find the time to survive Sing it!
You give me that high kind of feeling You give me that high kind of feeling One more time You give me that high kind of feeling And now you're trying to come down (instrumental break) Sing it.
You give me that high kind of feeling Sing it!
You give me that high kind of feeling Do it again!
You give me that high kind of feeling Sweat through your shirt, go on give me that.
High kind of feeling Just one more time.
Please!
That High kind of feeling Give it to me.
Just give me that High kind of feeling One more get!
Go on give me me that High kind of feeling One more again, go on give me that High kind of feeling (instrumental break) (cheering and applause) - [Zach] Are there any moments, you ever have moments of doubt, and like how do you overcome 'em?
- Okay.
Which field does your mind go in to deal with this problem, right, of doubt?
In a face on evening news I'm just going straight to the mirror and looking in the mirror and going, is it real or not, mirror?
Because you're gonna go back and remember all of these things that happened, first grade, right, somebody heard you hum, and then fifth grade something happened, and you had the recital in sixth grade, right?
And you have to be able to look in that mirror and go, wait a minute, this is true.
This is real because I had things that actually happened.
Got proof.
Right, and then doubt, where's doubt now?
your mind get in the way She put her... - If you're being doubtful, you're serving yourself in that moment.
I'm not trying to serve myself.
I'd much rather serve the music or serve the party, serve whatever the thing is happening, you know?
So just being grateful to even have the opportunity to do that wouldn't be sitting there in doubt.
(audience applauds) - We really appreciate.
I just wanna tell anybody who's<br/> and anybody out there in Nashville, wherever, how good they treat us when we got here, and how beautiful of a time it was and how welcome we felt and how gracious our hosts were.
Thank y'all very much for having us here.
(audience cheers and applauds) (keyboard music) Let's sing y'all one more song, just the three of us here.
This is our little prayer.
(soft keyboard music) I'm hopeful for the hopeless In the darkest black of nights Sky, land and sea I've got an overwhelming feeling That my soul will be right Sky, land and sea Come on.
(soft instrumental music) Ear to the wind, whispered who I am Sky, land and sea While lovers in the sun, the whole world we run Sky, land and sea How could I doubt my sister Or steal from my brother?
Sky, land and sea, we covered for fun (guitar solo) I'm hopeful for the hopeless In the darkest black of nights Sky, land and sea Just step out from the shadows and into the light Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea I said, sky, land and sea Louder!
Sky, land and sea I said, sky, land and sea Do it yourself, do it!
Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea (rhythmic clapping) Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea Sky, land and sea (audience whistles) (audience cheers and applauds) (country music) Home Home Home I'm going home (harmonica solo)
