well from shampoo to lipstick for the first time in more than 80 years consumers will finally know more about what's in the makeup and other personal care products they use a law championed by congressman Frank pallone is about to shake up and some say potentially revolutionize the Cosmetic industry Melissa Rose Cooper reports any kind of lotion shampoo makeup deodorant hair dye baby powder toothpaste tanning lotion right all these things are Cosmetics but I think most people think that when they use any of those products that somehow they've been approved if you will as safe or that the representation about their use has been tested in some way by the FDA and that was simply not true that's why congressman Frank pallone is celebrating the passage of a new law aimed at protecting consumers Health the modernization of Cosmetics regulation act allows the FDA to regulate cosmetic and personal products under the law companies are required to register product ingredients with the FDA the agency can also require a specific testing standards and issue recalls the idea is that if if these ingredients are known make sure the FDA can enforce it right but then you have the ability because you have the right to know what's in it that you can even look into on your in other words it's like self-enforcement the public now has the information and so the public knows and can take action the law is also being touted as a huge win for workers in the cosmetology field Deborah shashowski teaches classes inside the Piscataway magnet school and is excited about what it means for the future of her students we are constantly breathing in and absorbing through our skin and hair toxic chemicals from acrylics to formaldehyde that are harmful not only to the environment but to our health in my class I enforce the use of gloves and face masks whenever possible to help prevent exposure and truthfully we have yet to understand the full effects of these chemicals on our bodies that is why this law will be a game changer it means healthier School environment for my students and our instructors it ensures the safety comes first and foremost which is which translates to a healthier healthier lives for them as well as our future clients as the first County Vocational School in the nation our magnet schools have set a standard for excellence in both academics and Professional Training and we take tremendous pride in that our cosmetology program is no exception and the new regulations required under this legislation will be incorporated into the curriculum so that every student who graduates from this program is prepared to uphold these new safety standards the legislation is part of a federal spending bill passed last year it's the first update to cosmetic safety laws in the U.S in more than 80 years now FDA will know where companies are and what's in products companies will have an obligation to ensure that these products are produced in a safe manner companies won't just have to substantiate the safety of their products as Congressman pallone said but FDA can actually now look at their safety records which they couldn't do until December which is remarkable Congressman pallone says he hosts a new law will help ease the minds of consumers knowing the products they're buying are safe for NJ Spotlight news I'm Melissa Rose Cooper [Music] [Music]
