THIS COLUMBUS-BASED ARTIST CUTS AND MANIPULATES PAPER TO CREATE UNBELIEVABLY REALISTIC AND BEAUTIFUL SCULPTURES OF PLANTS AND FLOWERS.
IN THIS LOOK AT HER EXHIBITION AT THE FRANKLIN PARK CONSERVATORY, I THINK YOU'LL AGREE THAT HER CREATIONS ARE NEARLY AS STUNNING AS THE BOTANICALS THAT INSPIRE THEM.
♪♪ >> I CAN ACTUALLY GO ALL THE WAY TO MY CHILDHOOD.
EVEN WHEN I WAS 5, YOU KNOW HOW YOU ASK THE PROVERBIAL QUESTION OF, LIKE, “OH, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?” I ALWAYS SAID, “I'M GOING TO BE ARTIST.” I ALWAYS KNEW, EVEN WHEN I WAS 5 YEARS OLD, THAT THAT'S WHAT I WAS GOING TO BE.
AND SO IT JUST KIND OF TOOK OFF FROM THERE, AND IT WAS, LIKE, WHATEVER I COULD DABBLE IN.
IT WAS PASTELS, OR, YOU KNOW, WHATEVER I CAN GET MY HANDS ON.
IT WAS SEWING, OR PAINTING, IT JUST, IT KEPT GOING.
AND SO I DECIDED TO GO TO ART SCHOOL, WHICH WAS COLUMBUS COLLEGE OF ART & DESIGN ♪♪ AND THEN I GOT INTO ORIGAMI, WHICH ALSO BECAME ANOTHER OBSESSION.
PAPER BEING THE MEDIUM WAS SOMETHING I REALLY ENJOYED WORKING WITH.
THE MEDITATIVE PROCESS, THE RHYTHMIC KIND OF REPETITIVE THINGS.
AND SO FROM THERE I THINK I JUST GOT BORED.
AND, UM, INSTEAD OF CONTINUING TO CREATE OTHER PEOPLE'S DESIGNS, UM, AND, THOSE GEOMETRIC SHAPES, I DECIDED TO MOVE ONTO SOMETHING MORE EXPRESSIVE, WHICH WAS PAPER FLOWERS.
AND THAT WAS ABOUT EIGHT OR NINE YEARS AGO.
♪♪ MY GRANDMOTHER, GROWING UP, ALWAYS HAD LOTS OF PLANTS IN OUR HOUSE.
AND I THINK JUST SEEING THAT AND BEING AROUND THAT, IT WAS KIND OF LIKE AN INSPIRATION FOR ME.
AND SO HAVING LOTS OF PLANTS MYSELF AND ALSO GOING OUTDOORS IN NATURE, I'M ALWAYS DRAWN IN.
AND IT'S ALWAYS THE LITTLE THINGS.
IT'S THE METICULOUS LITTLE DETAILS, THE MAGIC BEHIND NATURE, THE SPIRIT OF NATURE.
THAT'S WHAT I AM INSPIRED BY.
PAPER IS ALWAYS CARD STOCK, FOR PLANTS, AND THEN FOR FLOWERS IT'S ALWAYS AN ITALIAN CREPE.
SO THERE'S TWO SEPARATE KINDS OF PAPERS THAT I USE.
♪♪ ♪♪ FROM THAT I USE A CARBINE BLADE CUTTING MACHINE.
WHICH IS, THE CRICUT, EVERYBODY KNOWS IT AS A CRICUT.
AND I HAVE TWO OF THOSE.
I ALSO HAVE A GLOW FORGE LASER, THAT I USE FOR SOME OF THE MORE PRECISE THINGS.
SO I'LL HAVE ALL THE SHAPES CUT OUT IN VARIEGATED SIZES.
SO IT'LL RANGE FROM A LARGE TO A SMALL, AND FROM THAT POINT --I SHAPE AND SCULPT WITH MY HAND.
I GLUE IT TOGETHER, ASSEMBLING IT.
AND THEN FROM THAT POINT THE PAINT IS REALLY WHERE ALL THE MAGIC --THE ALCHEMY LAYS.
IT'S THE PROCESS OF COMBINING ALL KINDS OF DIFFERENT SPRAYS, HAIR PRODUCTS, AND DIFFERENT THINGS TO KIND OF MAKE THAT MAGIC COME OUT OF A PIECE OF PAPER.
MAKE IT LOOK REAL.
AS REAL AS POSSIBLE.
♪♪ I GOT CONNECTED WITH FRANKLIN PARK CONSERVATORY ABOUT FOUR OR FIVE YEARS AGO.
THEY REACHED OUT TO ME TO DO SOME CLASSES, SO WE'VE KNOWN ABOUT EACH OTHER FOR --QUITE A WHILE.
FAST FORWARD ALL THE WAY ‘TIL NOW, I THINK THEY WERE LOOKING FOR SOMEBODY TO OPEN UP THAT SPACE AND KIND OF BRING SOMETHING NEW IN THERE, AND CAME ACROSS MY WORK AND I'VE COME QUITE A BIT OF DISTANCE FROM FOUR TO FIVE YEARS AGO ANYWAYS SO IT WAS PERFECT.
AND HONESTLY I'D BEEN WANTING TO BE IN THERE ANYWAYS, AND WAS TRYING TO FIGURE OUT WHO TO TALK TO GET INTO THAT SPACE.
SO TO GET THAT PHONE CALL, TO GET THAT EMAIL WAS LIKE A BIG DEAL TO ME BECAUSE I, STILL AM VERY HONORED, AND --EXCITED AND AMAZED.
♪♪ ♪♪ REALLY WHAT I'M TRYING TO DO IS REMIND EVERYBODY THAT THERE IS NATURE OUT THERE, THERE IS SOMETHING TO BE LOOKED AT AND APPRECIATED.
AND A LOT OF TIMES WE FORGET ABOUT IT, YOU KNOW?
WE MOVE ON IN OUR WORLDS.
WE WALK AROUND AND YOU KNOW WE'RE JUST SORT OF LIKE IN THE MUNDANE OR IN THE PROCESS OF OUR LIVES.
IT'S JUST SOMETHING TO BE APPRECIATED, THERE'S MAGIC AND THERE'S ENERGY THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT IT THAT YOU KNOW IS GOOD FOR US ON MANY LEVELS AND SO WHAT I'M TRYING TO DO IS GET EVERYBODY TO DO IS KIND OF LOOK A LITTLE BIT CLOSER.
FIND THAT MAGIC, FIND THE LIGHT COMING OUT OF THE DARK.
I'M INVITING YOU TO ACTUALLY GET A LITTLE BIT CLOSER AND JUST APPRECIATE.
♪♪ ♪♪ MOSTLY WHAT THE REACTION IS EXACTLY WHAT I'M GOING FOR, “IS WAIT A MINUTE, IS THIS REAL?
OR IS THIS” AND AS YOU GET CLOSER AND YOU GET DRAWN IN THAT'S WHEN IT SORT OF TURNS INTO WHAT IT ACTUALLY IS, IS THE PAPER.
AND THAT'S THE MOMENT WHERE IT BREAKS AWAY THAT ILLUSION, AND IT'S EXCITING BECAUSE AT FIRST YOU REALLY DID THINK THAT IT WAS PLANTS.
AND I'VE HAD A LOT OF PEOPLE COME AROUND TO, LIKE WHEN I'M DOING AN ART SALE, AND THEY'RE ASKING ME WHY DOES THE TITLE OF YOUR COMPANY SAY “PAPERBLOOMS” WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?
AND I'M LIKE IT'S ALL PAPER.
AND THEN THAT WAS THE MOMENT WHERE THEY'RE LIKE I THOUGHT THESE WERE REAL, AND IT'S EXCITING FOR ME BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT I'M TRYING TO DO.
AND THAT'S PART OF THE CHALLENGE, AND THE FASCINATION WITH CREATING MY WORK IS TRYING TO GET AS CLOSE TO NATURE AS POSSIBLE TO BUILD UPON THAT ILLUSION, AND THAT'S WHAT KEEPS ME GOING.
♪♪ ♪♪ >> AN EXPLORATION OF BOTANICALS IN PAPER CONTINUES AT THE FRANKLIN PARK CONSERVATORY THROUGH THE END OF MAY.
>>> NNEKA JONES AN ARTIST IN TAMPA FLORIDA COMBINES PAINT AND EMROIDERY TO CREATE STUNNING PORTRAITS.
HER WORK IS SYMBOLIC OF CURRENT SOCIAL ISSUES AND HER CARIBBEAN ROOTS AND HAS GARNERED NATIONAL ATTENTION.
♪♪ ♪♪ >> A LOT OF THE TIMES THE FIRST QUESTION THAT I GET IS, WHAT IS THE MATERIAL THAT I USED, OR WHAT'S THAT TEXTURE AND THE SECOND THING IS WHO IS THE GIRL?
ARE YOU RELATED TO HER?
WHERE DID SHE COME FROM?
HOW DO YOU KNOW HER?
AND SO WITH THAT FIRST QUESTION, IS EXACTLY WHAT I WANT YOU TO DO.
QUESTION WHAT THE TEXTURE IS ON THE PIECE.
LOOK CLOSER TO THE PIECE, KIND OF FIGURE OUT AND LOOK THROUGH THE CRACKS OF THE PIECE AND REALIZE THAT IT'S NOT JUST THICK PAINT ON THE SURFACE, IT'S ACTUALLY CONDOMS BENEATH THAT.
BUT ALSO LEADING FROM THE TEXTURE OF THE CONDOMS INTO HER ACTUAL FACE, YOU NOTICE THAT SHE'S KIND OF REPRESENTATIVE OF YOUNG GIRLS OF COLOR.
THAT HAVE BEEN PUT IN THE SITUATION OF SEX TRAFFICKING OR HUMAN TRAFFICKING.
WHAT I DO IS, BASED ON DIFFERENT IMAGES, I KIND OF COLLAGE THEM IN PHOTOSHOP SO THAT I COME UP WITH THIS IMAGE THAT LOOKS LIKE ONE PERSON, BUT IT'S ACTUALLY A COLLAGE OF DIFFERENT GIRLS.
IT'S BASICALLY THAT SYMBOL OF REPRESENTING EVERY YOUNG GIRL OF COLOR ♪♪ >> NNEKA'S WORK IS DELICATE AND DETAILED.
SHE'S INTRICATE IN EVERY ELEMENT OF THE TEXTURE SHE'S WORKING ON, THE TONE AND TEMPERATURE OF HER WORKS.
THE COLOR CHOICES, AND SO IF YOU LIKE SOMETHING THAT'S RICH AND FULL OF ALL OVERLAPPING MEANING USING COLOR AND FORM.
NNEKA'S WORK REALLY SATISFIES THAT, BUT IT ALSO HAS A DEEPER CONTEXT.
AND SO SHE USES THE DIFFERENT FORMS OF ART TO REALLY EXPLORE THINGS THAT ARE OFTEN DIFFICULT TO SAY OUT LOUD.
SHE TAKES ON AMAZING SUBJECT MATTER REALLY PUTTING A MIRROR UP TO SOCIETY.
>> WHEN I VIEW NNEKA'S ARTWORK, ONE WORD COMES TO MIND.
ONE WORD WOULD DOMINATE MY THINKING, AND THAT WOULD BE PROFOUND, AND A PIECE THAT COMES TO MIND IS A PIECE SHE DID ON CANCER AWARENESS.
WHERE SHE ACTUALLY CREATED THE IMAGE OF A LADY WITH ONE OF HER BREASTS REMOVED, SO THAT I SAW THAT THE WORK SHE PRODUCED WAS NOT SURFACE LEVEL TYPE ART, BUT VERY PROFOUND DEEP THINK PRODUCTIONS.
>> SINCE COMING TO THE U.S.
I THINK I'VE DEVELOPED MORE OF MY NARRATIVE SIDE OF MY ARTWORK.
BECAUSE I HAD A BIT OF TECHNICAL SKILL BEFORE, BUT I STILL FELT LIKE THAT ARTISTIC VOICE WAS LACKING.
AND WHEN I REALLY STARTED TO GET INTO MY DIFFERENT CLASSES AT U.T.
I REALIZED THAT I DIDN'T WANT MY WORK TO JUST SIT ON THE WALL AT A GALLERY OR JUST SIT AT A WALL AT YOUR HOME.
I WANTED IT TO RESIDE BEYOND THAT, AND RESIDE IN YOUR MIND AND EVOKE SOME KIND OF EMOTION OUT OF YOU.
NNEKA WAS ONE OF OUR FOUR DAUGHTERS.
OUR LAST DAUGHTER.
AND IN NNEKA WAS ALWAYS INDEPENDENT.
ONE OF THE THINGS I CLEARLY REMEMBER OF NNEKA GROWING UP IS THAT ABILITY TO TAKE CHARGE OF HER OWN LIFE AND BEING IN A POSITION WHERE SHE WANTS TO GO AND WHAT ARE THE NEXT STEPS.
>> I ACTUALLY GREW UP IN A TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO.
I WAS BORN IN TRINIDAD.
AND EVENTUALLY I ACTUALLY REALIZED THAT I HAD A PASSION FOR ART.
AND AFTER PLACING FIRST IN THE CARIBBEAN IN MY HIGH SCHOOL EXAMS, I DECIDED THAT IT WAS BEST THAT I CONTINUE TO PURSUE AN EDUCATION IN ART AND TRIED TO PURSUE A CAREER IN ART.
BEING INFLUENCED BY THE CARIBBEAN CULTURE, I ALSO WANTED TO EXPERIENCE CULTURES OUTSIDE OF THAT.
AND SO THAT THAT KIND OF DREW ME TO COMING TO THE U.S. AND LOOKING AT THE DIFFERENT SCHOOLS HERE.
WHEN I CAME TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA, I TOOK A FEW CLASSES.
A FEW SCULPTURE CLASSES, DRAWING CLASSES, ETC.
BUT, IT WAS TRULY WHEN I TOOK MY EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING CLASS THAT I FOUND MY ARTISTIC VOICE BECAUSE I KIND OF LOOSENED UP A LITTLE BIT.
A PROFESSOR, CHRIS VALLEY, TOLD US HE WANTED US TO CREATE A PAINTING WITHOUT USING PAINT.
IMMEDIATELY I WAS LIKE HOW AM I GOING TO CREATE A PAINTING WITHOUT USING PAINT?
I HAD TO FIND MATERIALS THAT I CAN MANIPULATE TO LOOK LIKE A PAINTING.
SO, THAT'S ACTUALLY WHEN I DID SOME RESEARCH AND DISCOVERED EMBROIDERY.
AND I JUST CONTINUED DEVELOPING MY WORK FROM THERE AND KIND OF LEARNING THESE MATERIALS AND THE TECHNIQUES.
HOW CAN I INCORPORATE MEANING BEHIND THIS AND HOW CAN I MAKE THESE PIECES NARRATIVE?
>> SHE REALLY STARTED A LOT OF HER GROWTH WHILE SHE WAS HERE AT U.T.
AND SO, SHE REALLY DEVELOPED A FOLLOWING IN 2017-2018.
AND HER BACKGROUND AS A MARKETING MAJOR ALSO REALLY KIND OF LEAD HER TO SPRINGBOARD INTO WHAT A LOT OF ARTISTS NEED TO DO.
ESPECIALLY YOUNG AND UP AND COMING ARTISTS NEED TO DO, WHICH IS SELF-MARKET.
>> MY MOM USED TO SEW.
SHE WOULD ALWAYS HAVE ME THREAD NEEDLES FOR HER.
THAT WAS LIKE THE ONLY THING SHE WOULD LET ME DO.
SO, I THINK NOW I'M LIKE A PRO BASICALLY, AT THREADING NEEDLES.
KIND OF INTERESTING THAT NOW I'M KIND OF LIKE A SEAMSTRESS, BUT I'M SEWING THESE PORTRAITS.
COMING UP TO MY FINAL GRADUATION SHOW.
AND THEN HAVING COVID HAPPEN AND THE PANDEMIC HAPPEN.
SO, I HAD GRADUATED VIRTUALLY AND ABOUT THREE MONTHS AFTER THAT I ACTUALLY GOT AN EMAIL FROM ONE OF THE ART DIRECTORS AT “TIME” MAGAZINE.
AND IN THE EMAIL HE HAD EXPRESSED TO ME THAT HE WAS BLOWN AWAY BY THE FACT THAT MY WORK WAS HAND-EMBROIDERED, WHICH WAS ACTUALLY WHAT I LEARNED AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TAMPA.
AND HE'S TELLING ME THAT MY WORK IS WORTHY OF BEING ON THE COVER OF THE MAGAZINE.
AND AFTER THE DOING THE COVER FOR “TIME” MAGAZINE SO MANY OPPORTUNITIES HAVE COME TO ME.
I'M KIND OF IMAGINING NOW OF KIND OF BALANCING THAT CONFIDENCE AND BEING ABLE TO SAY YES, I AM AN ARTIST AND YES, I AM A CONTEMPORARY ARTIST, AND I WILL BE SUCCESSFUL.

SHE SEES THINGS IN SUCH A POSITIVE WAY WHILE TAKING ON VERY DIFFICULT SUBJECTS.
THAT IS SOMETHING THAT WE NEED TODAY.

SHE'S PERHAPS BEST KNOWN AS THE DESIGNER OF THE DRESS MICHELLE OBAMA WORE IN THE 2009 INAUGURAL PARADE.
HERE'S A LOOK BACK AT HER WORK AND THE LONG CREATIVE COLLABORATION THAT SHE FORGED WITH HER HUSBAND, ARTIST RUBEN TOLEDO.

WE HAD AN ART CLASS AND WE COLLABORATED RIGHT AWAY.
BECAUSE I SAW HIS HANDS.
I MET THAT HAND.
THE ABILITY TO PUT DOWN A THOUGHT AND I FELL IN LOVE.
AND HE'LL SAY, I MEAN, I DIDN'T FALL IN LOVE WITH HIM.
I FELL IN LOVE WITH HIS ARTS.
[ LAUGHTER ] FUNNILY ENOUGH.
AND WE'VE BEEN WORKING TOGETHER EVER SINCE.
♪♪ THE FIRST THING THAT I ALWAYS SAY IS I'M NOT AN ARTIST.
THAT I AM A SERVANT OF MAKING CLOTHES AND WORKING WITH FABRICS, AND TAKING THEM TO THEIR LIMITS, AND MAKING WOMEN FEEL BEAUTIFUL.
AND JUST CARRY OUT AN EMOTION THAT THEN I CAN HAVE SOMEBODY COMMUNICATE WITH.
BUT, I DO IS I THINK ARTISTIC THOUGHTS.
AND THEN I PUT THEM TO SERVICE.
BECAUSE THESE GARMENTS HAVE TO WORK.
THE ARMS HAVE TO LIFT.
AND IT'S LIKE AN ENGINEER.
YOU KNOW, THESE THINGS HAVE TO MOVE WITH YOU.
SO, I'M LIKE AN ARTIST THAT IT CAN JUST BE ON A WALL.
MY BEST WORK.

SO, THERE'S THE IDEA THAT FIRST OF ALL, THERE'S ALL THESE LAYERS WE CAN'T SEE BEHIND IT, BUT THEY'RE THERE.
SO, THERE'S A FULL STORY TO THE YELLOW SPIDER WEB PAINTING.
AND THERE'S A FULL STORY TO THE PINK ORCHID PAINTING.
THERE'S A FULL STORY TO THE BROWN LEAVES THAT YOU DON'T SEE.
BUT, WHEN THEY'RE WOVEN TOGETHER, THEY MAKE THIS NEW THING UP HERE, RIGHT?
AND THEN I PAINTED OVER THAT.
SO, IT ISN'T VERY MUCH ABOUT TREATING ART AS A WOVEN -- IT'S THE FABRIC OF SOCIETY, YOU KNOW?
AND THE SUM OF ALL PARTS IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHAT'S BEHIND THERE.
>> COUTURE IS A DRESS MADE BY AN ARTIST.
SO, THAT TELLS YOU EVERYTHING BECAUSE YOU CAN HAVE MASS PRODUCTION.
AND IT'S NEVER TOUCHED BY THE ARTIST.
IN MY WORLD, I STILL MAKE EVERYTHING IN MY STUDIO IN NEW YORK.
WHICH IS RARE.
AND I'VE NEVER LEFT.
WE HAVE A GREAT TEAM OF MAYBE 15 PEOPLE.
I LEARNED TO SEW FROM THE BABYSITTER AND I FELL IN LOVE WITH IT.
I JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH SEWING.
SEWING IS REALLY MY LOVE.

AND THAT'S WHEN I KNEW WOW, THIS IS THE MEDIUM THAT I CAN -- I HAVE SOMETHING TO SAY.
FASHION IS WHAT HISTORY LOOKS LIKE.
WHEN YOU THINK OF AN ERA, YOU THINK OF HOW PEOPLE ARE DRESSED.
AND I THOUGHT I WANT TO HAVE SOMETHING TO DO WITH MY TIME.
>> WELL, I CAME FROM CUBA WHEN I WAS A KID, WHEN I WAS FIVE OR SIX.
AND I WAS VERY LUCKY TO GROW UP IN MANHATTAN, IN NEW YORK.
IN THE MOST GLORIOUS TIME I THINK WHICH WAS THE LATE ‘60s, EARLY TO MID-‘70s.
WHILE I WAS IN HIGH SCHOOL, I STARTED TO WORK IN MANHATTAN ALREADY.
DIFFERENT PLACES LIKE FIORUCCI AND UNIQUE CLOTHING WAREHOUSE.
THERE WAS A FASHION AND ART CROSSOVER THAT WAS VERY HEAVY AT THE TIME.
POETRY, AND MUSIC, AND DANCE.
AND ISABEL WAS MAKING COSTUMES AT THE SAME TIME WE WERE STILL 15 OR 16.
SO, THAT WAS A PRETTY INCREDIBLE EDUCATION.
I MET PEOPLE LIKE KEITH HERRING, BASQUIAT, AND KENNY SHARP.
AND FILMMAKERS LIKE MOLDOVAR.
AND PEOPLE LIKE OLSTEN, AND LENA HORNE, AND MUSICIANS.
AND IT WAS A PRETTY AMAZING TIME.
♪♪ A SILHOUETTE IS BECAUSE I TOO LOVE SHAPE.
AND I REACT TO A LOT FO RUBEN'S SHAPES.
SO, IT'S A DIALOG THAT WE HAVE WITH ONE ANOTHER.
>> PEOPLE ASSUME THAT YOU HAVE TO BE SIMILAR TO WORK TOGETHER.
IT'S ALL ABOUT THE FRICTION FOR US.
IT'S ABOUT THE FACT THAT WE ARE ALWAYS CLASHING.
AND THAT CROSS-POLLINATION IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE IT MAKES BOTH OF OUR SEPARATE ARTWORKS RICHER.
>> EVEN NOW WHEN I'M IN HERE, I START SEEING THE PATTERNS SPEAK TO ONE ANOTHER.
I'M LOOKING AT THIS PAINTING HERE AND YOU LIKE AT THE LINES ON THAT DRESS.
AND THEY MIMIC.
AND I CAN TELL YOU WE DID NOT THINK OF THAT.
THAT'S THE BEAUTY OF LIVING WITH AN ARTIST.
BECAUSE IT'S A CONSTANT COMMUNICATION.
AND AS LONG AS THERE'S RESPECT, THEN YOU KNOW, THAT'S YOUR WORK AND THIS MINE.
YOU KNOW WHEN TO FEED AND THEN PULL BACK.

WE GREW UP AS KIDS IN THIS RICH STEW THAT IS MANHATTAN.
WHERE IT DIDN'T MATTER WHAT AGE, AND SEX, AND COLOR, AND FINANCIAL BACKGROUND YOU CAME FROM.
WHAT MATTERED WAS WHAT YOU HAD TO GIVE TO THE SOUP.
