SO, A LOT OF US PROBABLY HAD OUR FIRST EXPERIENCE WITH ART BY WAY OF A BOX OF CRAYOLAS.
MAYBE THAT'S WHY WE'RE PARTICULARLY DRAWN TO THE WORK OF CHRISTIAN FAUR.
HE ACTUALLY HAS A DEGREE IN PHYSICS AND INCORPORATES PRINCIPLES OF MATHEMATICS INTO HIS ARTWORK.
AND THE RESULT IS SOME PERFECTLY PIXELATED PORTRAITS MADE OUT OF THOUSANDS OF CRAYONS THAT HE ACTUALLY MAKES HIMSELF IN HIS GRANVILLE STUDIO.
AND THAT'S WHERE WE'RE HEADED FOR THIS FIRST STORY.
\M\M >>> SO I'VE ALWAYS DONE ART WHEN I WAS LITTLE, BUT I'VE ALSO ALWAYS BEEN REALLY INTERESTED IN THE -- IN SCIENCE AND MATH.
SO WHEN IT CAME TIME TO GO TO COLLEGE, I WENT THE ROUTE OF PHYSICS AND SO THAT, YOU KNOW, WAS MY UNDERGRADUATE DEGREE.
I USUALLY COME UP WITH IDEAS THAT ARE SOMEWHAT MASOCHISTIC.
I DON'T KNOW WHY, BUT LIKE I HAVE THIS IDEA IN MY HEAD AND THEN I NEED TO ACCOMPLISH IT.
I DON'T KNOW IF IT'S GOING TO WORK OR NOT.
WHETHER IT'S LIKE, YOU KNOW, SEWING HUMAN HAIR ON TO AN UMBRELLA OR JUST DOING SOMETHING THAT'S, YOU KNOW, RIDICULOUSLY LABOR INTENSIVE.
I MEAN, YOU KNOW, STICKING SHREDDED PAPER BACK TOGETHER TO FORM AN IMAGE.
OR, YOU KNOW, STACKING 20,000 CRAYONS.
AND USUALLY, YOU KNOW, SOME OF THESE IDEAS I HAVE, I JUST DON'T SEE ANYBODY DOING THEM.
>> I MET CHRIS WHEN I FIRST OPENED THE SHERRIE GALLERIE.
THE SHERRIE GALLERIE FOCUSES ON THREE DIMENSIONAL ART FORMS, AND CHRIS CHOOSES THE MEDIUM TO HELP EXPRESS HIS CONCEPTS AND IDEAS.
AND THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT THE GALLERY IS ABOUT.
AND HE CALLS HIS WORK, THE CRAYON WORKS, PAINTINGS.
\M\M >> I THINK OF IT LIKE A PHOTOGRAPH MADE OF PIXELS, BUT EACH PIXEL IS ACTUALLY A CRAYON.
>> HE MAKES ALL OF HIS OWN CRAYONS.
>> INITIALLY I DID LOOK INTO USING CRAYOLA CRAYONS FOR MY FIRST PIECE, AND I FIND THAT THEY ONLY MADE LIKE 128 DIFFERENT COLORS, FOR THE MOST PART.
THEY WERE EXPENSIVE.
I COULD BUY THEM, THEY WERE A DOLLAR A PIECE.
THE MATERIAL THAT THEY WERE MADE OUT OF WAS PARAFFIN WAX, SO IT'S A WAX THAT'S NOT GOING TO HOLD UP OVER TIME.
AND THEN, FINALLY, NOBODY BUYS LIGHT CRAYONS.
SO WHEN YOU BOUGHT A BOX OF THEM, EVERYTHING WAS DARK.
AFTER WORKING ON THE COMPUTER, I'LL FINALLY GET LIKE WHAT I CALL AN INDEXED PHOTOGRAPH, WHICH IS A PHOTOGRAPH THAT HAS A CERTAIN NUMBER OF SWATCHES OR COLORS.
THOSE SWATCHES OR COLORS IS WHAT I'LL USE TO CAST THE BATCHES OF CRAYONS.
THEN IT IS JUST A MATTER OF ASSEMBLING BASED ON THE MAP THAT I CREATE.
AND THEN WHEN IT IS ASSEMBLED, I'M ABLE TO THEN FLIP IT AROUND AND AT THAT TIME IT'S USUALLY A LITTLE BIT OF WORK TO FIX CERTAIN ELEMENTS.
EVEN THOUGH EVERYTHING IS USUALLY LOOKS PHOTO-REALISTICALLY CORRECT, THERE ARE, LIKE, ELEMENTS THAT YOU SOMETIMES NEED TO ENHANCE.
SO I'LL PULL CRAYONS IN AND OUT UNTIL IT LOOKS OR FEELS RIGHT.
\M\M >> YOU WANT TO BE CLOSE TO SEE, WHAT IS IT?
OH, MY GOSH, IT'S CRAYONS.
AND THEN YOU STEP AWAY AND YOU ENGAGE IN IT AT A DISTANCE TO SEE THE IMAGE COME INTO FULL FOCUS.
>> EVEN THOUGH WHEN YOU SEE THE PIECES, IN THE END THEY FEEL LIKE YOU'RE SEEING SOMETHING THAT FEELS VERY PHOTO-REALISTIC, THE CLOSER YOU GET TO IT YOU REALIZE THERE'S JUST NOT THAT MUCH INFORMATION.
YOUR BRAIN IS ACTUALLY FILLING IN ALL THAT INFORMATION FOR THE WORK.
SO THE MELODIE SERIES I STARTED SEVERAL YEARS AGO.
I CREATED -- IT'S BASED ON A PORTRAIT OF MY DAUGHTER.
AT THE TIME I THINK SHE WAS LIKE 13 OR 14.
AND I GOT TO THINKING MAYBE I COULD DO A POP ART TYPE OF THING WHERE I COULD TAKE THE SAME IMAGE AND JUST REINTERPRET IT OVER AND OVER IN DIFFERENT WAYS.
>> HE PLANS TO DO A HUNDRED IN HIS LIFETIME.
>> AND I'M CURRENTLY ON NUMBER 79.
AND IT'S JUST A GREAT WAY OF LIKE PUSHING MYSELF, BECAUSE I'M NOT REALLY COMPETING AGAINST A LOT OF PEOPLE ON THE PLANET WITH THIS PROCESS, BECAUSE IT IS SO RIDICULOUSLY HARD.
BUT, LIKE, I'M COMPETING AGAINST MYSELF.
I THINK JUST THE NATURE OF THE CRAYON IS SO PLAYFUL AND EVERYONE STARTS -- YOU KNOW, EVERYONE STARTS OFF BEING AN ARTIST.
AND I THINK CRAYONS IS LIKE, YOU KNOW, IT'S THE PLACE WHERE PEOPLE START.
IT'S AFFORDABLE, YOU KNOW, AND PEOPLE LOVE THEM.
I KNOW WHEN I WAS A KID, I ALWAYS FELT A TWINGE OF GUILT LIKE TO USE THE BEAUTIFUL CRAYONS, BECAUSE THEY LOOKED SO GORGEOUS WHEN YOU OPENED THE BOX.
LIKE IF YOU WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO GET LIKE 64 DIFFERENT COLORS, YOU ALMOST DIDN'T WANT TO USE THEM BECAUSE THEY WERE JUST LIKE -- THERE WAS SO MUCH POTENTIAL THERE, IT JUST LOOKED SO BEAUTIFUL.
SO MAYBE THAT IS A LITTLE BIT OF WHAT PEOPLE THINK OF WHEN THEY THINK OF MY WORK.
I HAVE, YOU KNOW, BEEN WORKING WITH THE CRAYONS FOR MAYBE MORE THAN A DECADE NOW.
SO I'VE GOT ALL OF THESE LEFTOVER CRAYONS DOWNSTAIRS, AND I DON'T THROW THEM AWAY BECAUSE I'VE WORKED SO HARD TO MAKE THEM.
SO HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS OF CRAYONS.
AND I THOUGHT, WELL, IT WOULD BE KIND OF INTERESTING TO SEE WHAT THESE CRAYONS WOULD LOOK LIKE IF THEY WERE MELTED.
BUT WHAT I'M USING IS LIKE LITTLE WAX MOSAICS AND CREATING A SERIES OF PORTRAITS.
I THINK I'M CHOOSING MATHEMATICIANS JUST BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T BEEN REPRESENTED VERY MUCH IN THE ART COMMUNITY, AS WELL AS MY BACKGROUND BEING IN PHYSICS.
I FEEL LIKE THEY DESERVE -- THEY DESERVE TO BE PART OF THE CONTEMPORARY CANON OF PORTRAITS.
I'M GOING TO BE THE ONE MAKING THEM.
AS LONG AS I'M ABLE TO CREATE AND HAVE FUN AS AN ARTIST, I THINK I'LL BE GOOD, YOU KNOW.
I DON'T SEE MYSELF RUNNING OUT OF, LIKE, IDEAS ANY TIME SOON.

TOGETHER, THESE ARTISTS CREATE BRAND NEW WORKS OF ART THAT DRAW INSPIRATION FROM EACH OTHER.

\M\M >> WHEN I CREATE MY PAINTINGS, I WANT THEM TO BE PERFECT.
I WANT THERE TO BE NO DISTRACTIONS.
I WANT THE EDGES TO BE REALLY HARD EDGE.
I DON'T WANT YOU TO SEE PAINTBRUSH STROKES.
I WANT IT TO BE SO CLEAN AND SO PRECISE THAT IT'S JUST LIKE, "WOW, THAT'S A PAINTING?"
\M\M I'M JASON WILSON.
I HAVE BEEN AN ART TEACHER IN THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA FOR 31 YEARS.
I'M NOW A PROFESSIONAL ARTIST, TRYING TO BE, AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS WITH THAT.
I'M KNOWN KIND OF AS A PAINTER OF QUILTS, I EMBRACE THAT.
I THINK IT'S PART OF THE LEGACY THAT I HOPE TO LEAVE.
I'VE ALWAYS HAD ART IN MY LIFE.
GROWING UP AS A CHILD, I REMEMBER GOING TO MY GRANDMA'S HOUSE.
THE QUILTS WOULD BE HANGING FROM THE -- FROM THE CEILING.
AND I USED TO BE FASCINATED WITH THE DESIGNS AND THE PATTERNS IN THOSE QUILTS, AND ESPECIALLY THE 3D ONES.
MA WILSON WAS MY GREAT GRANDMA.
SHE WAS IN THE PAPER A LOT FOR HER QUILTS.
SHE MADE QUILTS FOR SEVERAL OF THE DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENTS AND GOVERNORS, BUT ONLY THE DEMOCRAT.
SHE WAS QUITE A CHARACTER, SHE'D TELL YOU EXACTLY WHAT SHE THOUGHT.
THIS QUILT IS AT LEAST 55 YEARS OLD.
AND IT WAS MADE BY MA WILSON.
WHY DO I KEEP THE QUILTS THAT I HAVE FROM MY GRANDMAS?
I CHERISH THOSE, BECAUSE NOW THEY BECOME A PART OF ME BECAUSE OF THE ART THAT I HAVE DEVELOPED OUT OF THE STYLE OF SEEING AND BEING INSPIRED BY THEIR QUILTS.
WHEN I START A PAINTING OF MY TRADITIONAL STYLE, I WILL DRAW IT TO SCALE ON A PIECE OF GRID PAPER.
IT KIND OF GOES BACK TO THE TECHNIQUE IN QUILTING WHERE THEY DID QUILTINGS BY BLOCKS, BUT I DO IT ON GRID PAPER.
THEN I GET THE CANVAS AND I START BRINGING THAT UP TO THE CANVAS.
IT HAS TO BE SO PRECISE, BECAUSE IF YOU -- IF YOU GET IT OFF, LINES WON'T MATCH.
I HAD MY STUDENTS THROUGH THE YEARS WOULD TELL ME, "MR. WILSON, THAT'S CHEATING.
YOU'RE USING TAPE, I CAN DO THAT."
AND I'D SAY, "HERE, GO DO IT."
ABOUT TWO DAYS LATER, THEY'D BRING IT BACK, "OKAY, MR. WILSON, YOU CAN DO THAT.
I CAN'T QUITE HANDLE IT."
IT TOOK ME YEARS TO DISCOVER THIS, TO FIGURE IT OUT.
YOU KNOW, THIS BRUSH HERE WAS THE BIG SECRET, BECAUSE I LEARNED TO VARNISH THOSE EDGES BASICALLY.
\M\M I DECIDE THE COLORS AFTER I HAVE THE GRID DRAWING.
I WILL DRAW IT TO THE CANVAS AND THEN I WILL SET IT ASIDE.
AND I MAY WAIT THREE, FOUR WEEKS BEFORE I START, BECAUSE I'M TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE COLOR SCHEME.
AND IT'S WEIRD BECAUSE THEN YOU START PAINTING IN YOUR HEAD AT NIGHT.
AND SO THOSE COLORS END UP KIND OF COMING FROM YOUR DREAMS, BECAUSE YOU GO TO SLEEP AND YOU'RE DREAMING ABOUT THIS PIECE.
AND THOSE COLORS SOMETIMES END UP BEING THE COLORS THAT YOU USE IN THE ACTUAL PAINTING.
IT'S TEDIOUS, BUT I ENJOY IT.
NOT EVERYBODY DOES, SO -- A LOT OF TIMES PEOPLE THINK THAT IT'S COMPUTER-GENERATED, AND SOMETIMES THEY THINK THAT INSULTS ME.
BUT TO ME, THAT'S A COMPLIMENT THAT I CAN -- I CAN GET IT THAT CLEAN.
THAT'S THE PART THAT SCARED ME THE MOST AFTER THE WRECK.
[ SIREN ] IN OCTOBER, OCTOBER THE 7th, I WAS IN A VERY SERIOUS CAR ACCIDENT.
I WAS ON MY WAY TO WORK, AND I WAS IN A HEAD-ON COLLISION.
I HAD THREE FRACTURED RIBS, A FRACTURED STERNUM, A SEVERE HEAD INJURY WITH A SEVERE CONCUSSION.
MY ANKLE WAS BENT COMPLETELY IN TWO AND CRUSHED.
I WAS SCARED THAT I WOULDN'T -- I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO RETURN TO WHAT I LOVED.
IN THIS WORLD, WE CAN'T CONTROL ANYTHING.
IT'S JUST CHAOTIC.
BUT WHEN I AM CREATING THAT PAINTING, THAT'S THE ONE THING I CAN CONTROL.
I REMEMBER GOING INTO THE DINING ROOM AND SETTING DOWN AND DEVELOPING A GRID PAINTING.
BECAUSE I WANTED TO KNOW THAT I COULD STILL COME UP WITH AN IDEA.
SO I SAT DOWN AND I DREW THIS PIECE OUT ON THE GRID PAPER, AND IT ENDED UP BEING THE FIRST PAINTING COMPLETED AFTER THE WRECK.
IT'S CALLED "FRACTURED."
I KNOW THAT SOME OF MY PAINTINGS ARE VERY BUSY AND THEY CAN -- THAT CAN BE PART OF THE REACTION THEY PROVOKE.
I THINK A LOT MY ART DOES NEED TO BE SEEN FROM A DISTANCE, BECAUSE FROM A DISTANCE IS WHEN THAT VISUAL MOVEMENT HAPPENS.
THIS KIND OF GOES BACK TO THE PERCEPTUAL ART.
PEOPLE SEE WHAT THEY WANT TO SEE IN IT.
SOMETIMES THE ONES THAT I THINK ARE, I DON'T LIKE THAT, THE FIRST ONE'S THAT SELL, BECAUSE SOMEBODY ELSE WILL SEE IT AND THEY LOVE IT.
>> IT MAKES IT LOOK LIKE IT HAS SEVERAL MORE LAYERS RATHER THAN -- >> I HAD ALWAYS THOUGHT, WELL, I'M DOING ART INSPIRED BY MY GRANDMA'S AND GREAT GRANDMA'S QUILTS, AND THE PATTERNS I SEE OF OTHER QUILTS.
I WANTED TO BRING TOGETHER A GROUP OF PROFESSIONAL QUILTERS WHO WOULD TAKE THE PAINTINGS THAT I HAD PAINTED INSPIRED BY QUILTS, AND THEN THEY WOULD DO QUILTS INSPIRED BY THOSE PAINTINGS.
AND SO I'VE BEEN DREAMING ABOUT THIS FOR A LONG TIME, AND SO I PUT A DEAL ON FACEBOOK.

SO I LOOKED HIM UP, AND WHEN I SAW HIS PAINTINGS, I KNEW RIGHT AWAY, I WANTED TO MAKE QUILTS BASED ON HIS PAINTINGS.

>> I LOVE HIS USE OF COLOR.
>> I REALLY LIKED THE STRONG GEOMETRIC SENSE THAT IT HAD.
>> AND WE SAID, "OH MY GOSH, THIS GUY IS BASICALLY JUST PAINTING QUILTS."
>> IT IS A NEAT GROUP OF PEOPLE, BECAUSE ALL SEVEN OF THEM ARE DIFFERENT.
AND THAT'S WHAT I WANTED.
>> "QU'AINT" IS "Q-U" FOR QUILTING, AND THE "AIN'T" PART IS FOR PAINTING.
>> WE DON'T COPY IT, WE JUST DO AN INTERPRETATION OF HIS PAINTING.
>> WELL, I TOOK THE BASIC COMPONENTS HE HAD HERE OF THE STRIPES AND THE CROSS BARS.
I WANTED TO, WITH THIS PIECE, SHOW NOT ONLY WHAT WAS GOING ON, BUT HIGHLIGHTS AND DARKNESS.
>> SO THE "BOOM POW" CAME FROM AN ACTUAL COMIC BOOK, BUT ALSO THE WAY THESE DRAWINGS ARE PUT TOGETHER IS VERY MUCH WHAT YOU WOULD SEE IN A GRAFFITI OUT IN THE STREET.
>> WE'VE BEEN CALLING IT "THE INVASION QUILT."
AS SOON AS I SAW THIS -- BECAUSE I WAS LIKE, "I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M GOING TO DO."
AND THEN I SAW THAT, AND I WAS JUST LIKE, "THAT'S IT."
IT WAS LIKE, "IT WAS LIKE A SPIDER BOT."
\M\M >> I THINK IF MA WILSON CAME IN HERE, SHE WOULD BE ASTOUNDED AT THE COLORS.
>> PEOPLE ALWAYS ALREADY LOOK AT PAINTING AS A FINE ART, AND WE'D LIKE TO SEE THEM SEE QUILTING MORE AS A FINE ART AND NOT JUST AS A CRAFT.
>> THE PEOPLE WHO PUT THOSE TOGETHER REALLY TOOK THE TIME TO THINK ABOUT HOW THE COLORS WORK TOGETHER, HOW THE PATTERNS WORK TOGETHER, AND TO CREATE SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL.
>> WE HOPE THAT THEY'LL SEE ON THE WALL HOW BEAUTIFUL THEY ARE TOGETHER, MAYBE TO MAKE PEOPLE LOOK A LITTLE CLOSER.
>> WE MIGHT JUST STEP UP AND SHOW OKLAHOMA FIRST OF ALL, SHOW THE UNITED STATES AND HEY, WHO KNOWS, MAYBE SHOW THE WORLD WHAT THE MIDWESTERN ART QUILTS AND ART CAN BE LIKE.
>> I HAVEN'T SEEN ANYTHING LIKE QU'AINT YET.
AND I THINK THAT'S PRETTY GOOD, BECAUSE I THINK IT'S GOING TO GIVES US SOMETHING UNIQUE TO OFFER THE ART WORLD.
THIS IS KIND OF BEEN A JUST A DREAM COME TRUE TO BE HONEST WITH YOU.
THAT WE FINALLY HAVE GOT TO THIS POINT.
AND I LOOK FORWARD TO CONTINUING, BECAUSE WE STILL WANT TO GO FURTHER.
I OFTEN THINK WHAT WOULD MY GRANDMAS THINK ABOUT THIS.
I THINK THAT THEY WOULD ENJOY SEEING WHAT I'VE DONE.
AND I HOPE THEY WOULD BE PROUD OF WHAT I'VE ACCOMPLISHED.

IT JUST AMAZES ME THAT THE JOURNEY HAS BEEN AS SUCCESSFUL AS IT HAS BEEN.
AND I'M ENJOYING EVERY SECOND OF IT.

MY FAMILY'S FROM DETROIT.
AND THEN WE ALL KIND OF MIGRATED DOWN HERE WHEN I WENT TO COLUMBUS COLLEGE OF ART AND DESIGN.
I REMEMBER BEING YOUNGER AND, LIKE, NOT REALLY SEEING MYSELF IN PLACES.
LIKE, WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, I COULDN'T FIND PAPER DOLLS THAT LOOKED -- THAT WERE BROWN.
YOU KNOW?
I COULDN'T, SO I MADE MY OWN.
AND I DID THAT AS, LIKE, A 6-YEAR-OLD LITTLE GIRL.
I MADE MY OWN PAPER DOLLS AND IT GREW TO A COLLECTION OF LIKE A THOUSAND PAPER DOLLS.
BECAUSE THAT'S HOW DEDICATED I WAS OR PASSIONATE ABOUT SEEING THINGS THAT LOOK LIKE ME IN THE WORLD, YOU KNOW.
SO WITH MY WORK, I WANT TO SHOW, LIKE, PEOPLE OF COLOR, BLACK PEOPLE, DOING REGULAR THINGS.
YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN?
EXISTING IN THEIR REGULAR LIFE AND BEING HAPPY, OR BEING SAD, OR BEING PLAYFUL, OR BEING IN LOVE.
LIKE, THAT'S ALL VERY IMPORTANT TO ME, TO JUST ILLUSTRATE THOSE MOMENTS.
BECAUSE YOU DON'T SEE THEM AS MUCH AS YOU SHOULD, YOU KNOW.
I THINK IT WAS IN 2012 IS KIND OF WHEN I FIGURED OUT THAT I COULD ACTUALLY SELL MY ARTWORK ON PRODUCTS.
AND THAT'S WHEN ARIEL BRANDS CAME ABOUT.
I BASICALLY TOOK MY ARTWORK AND STARTED PUTTING IT ON EVERYTHING THAT I COULD THINK OF.
LIKE, LITERALLY PRINTING IT ON EVERYTHING I COULD THINK OF.
\M\M BACK BEFORE, YOU KNOW, WHEN I WAS YOUNGER, WHEN I WAS A KID LIKE THAT -- I DIDN'T HAVE ACCESS TO SEEING, LIKE, A BLACK ARTIST, A BLACK WOMAN ARTIST CREATING ARTWORK AND MAKING MONEY OFF OF IT, AND ACTUALLY HAVING YOUR OWN STUDIO AND STUFF LIKE THAT.
LIKE, I DIDN'T KNOW THAT EXISTED.
AND SO BEING ABLE TO FILL THAT GAP FEELS GREAT FOR ME, BECAUSE I KNOW THE NEXT GENERATION, THEY'LL HAVE MORE EXAMPLES THAT I DIDN'T HAVE WHEN I WAS YOUNGER.
