EVERYONE IS WORKING ON THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL PORTFOLIO, AND WHATEVER PROJECT THAT THEY WANT TO ACCOMPLISH.

I MAKE PORTRAITS OF SOMEONE YOU LOVED.
YOU KNOW, THE ONE WHO'S STANDING ON THE BED, LOOKING THROUGH THE WINDOW.
>> CRUST STARTED HERE A COUPLE OF YEARS AGO, AND HE HAD A VERY RECOGNIZABLE STYLE WHEN HE GOT HERE, SO YOU COULD TELL THAT HIS WORK WAS HIS.
AND SINCE COMING COT STUDIO AND OVER THE PANDEMIC, HE'S REALLY HONED HIS SKILLS WITH WHAT HE WANTS TO DO AND HIS COLOR CHOICES AND DOESN'T REALLY NEED A WHOLE LOT OF STAFF INTERACTION ANYMORE, BECAUSE HE'S BECOME A LITTLE BIT MORE INDEPENDENT WITH HIS ART MAKING.
HE'S VERY SELF-DRIVEN WITH WHAT IT IS HE WANTS TO MAKE, AND WHEN HE FIGURES OUT WHAT HE WANTS TO MAKE, HE'S VERY FOCUSED ON THAT.
HE'S VERY MUCH FOCUSED ON WHAT IT IS THAT HE'S DOING WHILE HE'S HERE AT THE STUDIO.
SO IT'S REALLY NICE TO SEE SOMEBODY THAT'S MOTIVATED LIKE THAT TO, YOU KNOW, SELL ART AND BE AT THE SHOWS AND GET ALL OF HIS STUFF DONE.

IT WAS A WOMAN WALKING OUT INTO THE SUNSET FROM BEHIND.
SHE WAS KIND OF SILHOUETTED, SO YOU COULDN'T REALLY SEE WHAT SHE WAS WEARING, AND HE GETS KIND OF FIXATED ON WHAT IT IS THAT HE'S MAKING, SO HE KIND OF COMES UP WITH TITLES FOR THEM HIMSELF, TOO.
AND THAT PIECE WAS FANTASTIC.
VERY -- GOT ALL THE COLORS ON AND WORKED ON INGREDIENTS AND THINGS LIKE THAT.
>> I WAS SO PROUD, WHEN I MADE IT MYSELF.
MY HEART IS THE BEAUTIFUL AND TALENTED, BECAUSE I'M REAL TALENTED.
AND I'M THE KING OF THE ART.

SO HE IS AN OG FOR OPEN DOOR.
HE'S A STAPLE OF OUR ARTISTS.
AND HE'S VERY INDEPENDENT WITH WHAT HE MAKES.
HE KNOWS HIS STYLE, HE KNOWS WHAT HE WANTS TO MAKE AND HE IS, YOU KNOW, HE JUST GOES FOR IT.

>> MARK CAN TELL THE TALLEST TALES YOU'VE EVER HEARD AND MAKE YOU BELIEVE THEM.
I'VE HEARD EVERYTHING FROM, YOU KNOW, HIM MEETING THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES TO HIM WORKING WITH, LIKE, LIVING -- I DON'T KNOW.
JUST DOING ALL KINDS OF CRAZY STUFF.
AND SOME OF THEM ARE TRUE.
SOME OF THE THING HE SAYS ARE TRUE.
SO IT'S ALWAYS SURPRISING TO FIND OUT WHICH ONES.
YOU'VE GOT A GREAT IMAGINATION AND HE FIGURES OUT WHAT HE WANTS TO MAKE AND KIND OF SEES THINGS IN A DIFFERENT WAY IN HIS PAINTINGS.
THE WAY THAT HE INTERPRETS THE PHOTO REFERENCES IS ALWAYS VERY UNIQUE FOR MARK.
AND YOU CAN TELL WITH HIS STYLE.
USUALLY, HE USES PALETTE KNIVES AND LOTS AND LOTS OF LAYERS, AND LOTS AND LOTS OF COLORS, AND KIND OF LAYERS OF THINGS TO MAKE A SOMEWHAT BLURRY IMAGE OR A DISTORTED IMAGE.
>> TO REMIND THEM ABOUT.
>> HE REALLY LOVES WORKING ON LANDSCAPES.
AND I THINK HE PROBABLY WATCHED A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT THE CIVIL WAR AT ONE POINT AND WAS LIKE, I WANT TO DO THE PAINTING OF A CIVIL WAR BATTLEFIELD.
BECAUSE ALL OF THOSE RENAISSANCE PAINTINGS ARE SO DETAILED.
AND HE LOVES WORKING ON LITTLE TINY DETAILS, PEOPLE.
A LOT OF HIS WORK IS FROM HISTORICAL PAINTING REFERENCES.
SO HE'S DONE A MONA LISA.
HE'S DONE RENAISSANCE PAINTINGS, HE REALLY LOVES LIKE -- HE DID A REALLY GOOD FRANCES BAKEN INTERPRETATION.
HISTORICAL THINGS ARE KIND OF HIS GO-TO WHEN HE'S NOT DOING LANDSCAPE.
WE HAVE SEVEN SHOWS A YEAR, AND THEY'RE ALL OPEN TO THE PUBLIC.

WHAT CAUGHT MY EYE WITH NINA IS SHE HAS A VERY INTERESTING SPACE IN THE STORY.
AND RESEARCHING HER, COME TO FIND OUT THAT SHE WAS BIPOLAR.
SO THAT FASCINATED ME AND I STARTED REALLY HEARING THE LYRIC OF HER WORK.

I'M AN ASSISTANT PROFESSOR AT BOORK HIGH SCHOOL AND I'M ALSO AN ARTIST.

WHEN I WAS IN COLLEGE, I LOVED HIP HOP.
SO THAT IN FACT MY WORK.
AS I GOT OLDER, I WENT THROUGH MY SOCIAL KIND OF JUSTICE PERIOD.
NOW I WOULD SAY I'M FIRMLY INTO DOING CHARACTERTURES, BECAUSE SOME OF MY FAVORITE ARTISTS ARE CARICATURE ARTISTS.
SO THAT'S FASCINATING TO ME.
SO RIGHT NOW I'M WORKING ON SERIES.
I STARTED WITH JAZZ MUSICIANS, AND NOW I'M DOING MOVIE VILLAINS.
IT VARIES.
IT ALL DEPENDS ON HOW MUCH I'M INTO SOMETHING.
>> FOR THE NINA SIMONE PIECE, IT'S A MIXED MEDIA PIECE.
IT'S MAINLY COLOR PENCILS, ACRYLIC, AND JUST A MEDIUM THAT'S CALLED ULTRAGEL MEDIUM ULTRA.
BASICALLY, I TAKE THE GEL MEDIUM AND I WATER IT DOWN, MIX IT WITH PAINT, AND APPLY IT WITH A BRAIDER.
AND THAT GIVES THE PAPER A SORT OF TEXTURE AND I WILL USE THAT TEXTURE WITH THE COLORED PENCIL TO MAKE UP TO LOOK SKIN LOOK LIKE SKIN.
>> YOU WALK IN OUR HOUSE AND IT'S KIND OF LIKE A GALLERY.
IT'S INTERESTING WHEN SOMEONE NEW COMES IN THE HOUSE AND THEY LOOK AT HIS WORK.
PEOPLE ARE AMAZED THAT HE CREATED IT.
LISTENING TO HIM TALK ABOUT HIS WORK, I GET A SENSE OF PRIDE, JUST LISTENING TO HIM AND HOW HE EXPRESSES HIMSELF AND HIS WORK.
>> WHEN I WAS A KID, MY DAD WAS A NATURAL ARTIST.
OF COURSE, YOU LOOK UP TO YOUR FATHER AS A LITTLE KID, SO I WOULD START TO COPY WHATEVER HE DREW AND I KEPT COPYING HIS THINGS TO THE POINT WHERE IT BECAME A HOBBY, AND I KEPT DOING IT AND DOING IT AND NURTURED IT INTO A CAREER.
I FOCUSED ON EDITORIAL ILLUSTRATION.
I'VE DABBLED IN GRAPHIC DESIGN, TAUGHT MYSELF GRAPHIC DESIGN, AND I ENDED UP DOING MORE GRAPHIC DESIGN THAN ILLUSTRATIONS.
I WAS AT HOME DOING FREELANCE.
JUST KIND OF, YOU KNOW, BEING A YOUNG 22, 23 YEARS OLD, GOT A PHONE CALL.
SOME FOLKS KNEW THAT I DID SOME ART AND ASKED ME TO COME SUBSTITUTE SO I SUBSTITUTED, THOSE PAYCHECKS AND BENEFITS, BUT I THINK MORE SO THAN ANYTHING, IT'S THE KIDS.
AFTER ABOUT TWO OR THREE WEEKS, YOU BOND WITH THE KIDS.
THEY'RE CALLING YOU MR. G. OR WHATEVER AND YOU'RE CRACKING JOKES AND IT JUST BECAME A PASSION.
ARE I GET UP A QUARTER TO 5:00 IN THE MORNING, HOME ON A GOOD DAY AT 4:00, ON A BAD DAY, 10:30, 1:00 ARE AT NIGHT.
SO ON THOSE DAYS, I DON'T DRAW.
IF I TRY TO DRAW OR PAINT EVERY OTHER DAY.
>> HE'LL STAY UP TO 2:00, 3:00 IN THE MORNING WORKING ON A PIECE.
IT'S RIDICULOUS.
IT'S HARD TO BALANCE HIS ART AND BEING AN ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL AND I THINK HE HAS LEARNED FINALLY HOW TO MANAGE THAT, WHERE HE'S STILL ABLE TO EXPRESS HIMSELF IN HIS WORK THROUGH ART AND STILL BE ABLE TO FUNCTION THE NEXT DAY.
>> SOMETIMES THEY COLLECT DUST AND NOW I'M AT AN OLDER AGE, YOU KNOW, I CAN TRADE SOME DOLLARS.
SO.
>> WHAT I LOVE ABOUT GREG, HE SHARES HIS WORK WITH OTHERS AND HE TEACHES THEM.
HE TAKES THE TIME TO DEVELOP THE SKILL OF ART.
HE RESEARCHES HIS PIECES, HE REACHES DIFFERENT TECHNIQUES AND ALSO THAT EDUCATED PIECE OF HIM, WHERE HE SHARES WHAT HE HAS LEARNED THROUGH HIS FORMAL TRAINING AND FROM JUST WORK, HE WILLINGLY SHARES AND TEACHES THAT WITH STUDENTS.
SO, IT'S KIND OF NICE TO JUST SEE THE FULL CIRCLE OF HIM AS AN ARTIST AND HIM AS AN EDUCATOR.
>> EVEN TO THIS DAY, I'LL END UP DROPPING MY CLIPBOARD AND I'LL START DO THIS WAY.
TRY DOING IT THIS WAY, SO THE TEACHING ASPECT HAS NEVER LEFT.
AND THERE'S A SENSE OF HOME WHEN I'M IN FRONT OF A HOME TEACHING THEM THE ART.
IT'S PURPOSE.
I THINK EVERYBODY HAS A PURPOSE.
AND I THINK ONCE FOLKS FIND THAT PURPOSE, YOUR DUTY IS TO KIND OF LOCK IN THAT PURPOSE AND BLESS IT AND EEMOTIONS.
TO HAVE OTHERS SEE SOMETHING IN THE WORKS THAT THEY CAN RELATE TO.
THAT IF THEY TAKE THE WORK HOME, MAKE THEM PERMANENTLY RELATE TO THE WORK, WHICH IS COOL.
BUT IT'S SATISFYING AND A WAY THAT I CAN EXPRESS MYSELF AND TELL STORIES AND GIVE BACK.

HIS SON, JASON, GREW UP AROUND THE SHOP AND NOW DESIGNS AND HAND CRAFTS EVERYTHING FROM TABLES AND RAILINGS TO UNIQUE HOME GOODS AND ONE OF A KIND ARTWORK.
WE TOOK A BEHIND THE SCENES LOOK AT HOW IT'S DONE.
>> EVER SINCE I WAS A KID WORKING IN MY DAD'S METAL SHOP, THERE WAS ALWAYS FIRE, THERE WAS ALWAYS HOT STUFF GOING AROUND, AND I WAS A PROBABLY A LITTLE BIT OF A PYRO AS A KID.
>> I WOULD ALWAYS BE MESSING AROUND THE SHOP, TWISTING METAL AND MELTING STUFF.
ALL OF THAT KIND OF SPRUNG CREATIVITY AS I WAS OLDER AND I COULD ACTUALLY FUNCTIONALLY DO SOMETHING WITH IT.
BEING AROUND IT MY WHOLE LIFE HAS INSPIRED ME TO COME THIS FAR.
WE MAKE, YOU KNOW, CREATIVE, CUSTOM HOME DECOR THAT'S ARTISTIC AND ALSO FUNCTIONAL.
SO THINGS LIKE PLANT HANGERS AND WINE RACKS AND JEWELRY REES.
A LOT OF IT'S JUST STUFF THAT WE JUST START BENDING AND CREATING IN THE SHOP TO FIND SOMETHING THAT, YOU KNOW, WE LIKE OR THAT'S SUITABLE.
A LOT OF THE THINGS THAT WE'VE MADE ARE CUSTOMER REQUESTS FOR MAYBE FAMILY.
I DEFINITELY LIKE OUR STEEL PLANT HANGERS.
THOSE ARE LIKE ONE OF THE BIGGEST THINGS THAT WE SELL.
>> SO WE MAKE IT SO ONE OF THE ARMS ROTATES AROUND.
PEOPLE CAN GO INSIDE AND OUTSIDE AND WE MAKE A WALL MOUNT THAT GOES WITH THEM.
AND IT'S ALL TWISTED, WROUGHT IRON.
IT JUST MATCHES REALLY WELL AND PEOPLE HAVE BEEN BUYING THOSE UP LIKE CRAZY.
WE HAVE HAD TROUBLE KEEPING THEM IN STOCK.
SO I GREW UP KIND OF HANGING OUT WITH MY DAD IN HIS METAL SHOP, AS HE WAS COMPLETING PROJECTS.
I WAS A LITTLE KID RUNNING AROUND.
HE WOULD BRING ME WITH HIM ALL THE TIME.
I REMEMBER WHEN I WAS IN GRADE SCHOOL AND THEY WOULD GIVE YOU THOSE PAPERS, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP, I ALWAYS WROTE "WELDER," BECAUSE I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE JUST LIKE MY DAD.
HE WAS A VERY CREATIVE PERSON.
HE WOULD BE MAKING ARTISTIC ITEMS FOR MY MOM AND FAMILY MEMBERS AND I KIND OF FOUND SOME OF THESE THINGS AND I STARTED RECREATING THEM.
AS HE SAW ME DOING THIS, IT JUST KIND OF EXPANDED.
HE WOULD GIVE ME SOME POINTERS, TRY THIS, TRY THIS.
HERE'S A BETTER WAY TO BEND THAT SO IT'S NOT ALL WONKY.
HE GUIDED THE PROCESS A LOT AND MADE ME WHO I AM TODAY.
I WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO DO THIS WITHOUT HIS TEACHING.
IT'S REALLY SAD THAT HE PASSED AWAY TOO SOON.
I MEAN, IT WAS SUPER UNEXPECTED.
MY FATHER HAS HAD THIS VERY SAME SHOP IN THIS LOCATION FOR THE LAST 30 YEARS, NO, MORE THAN 40 YEARS NOW.
ONCE HE PASSED AWAY, I JUST CONTINUED RUNNING THE SHOP, EXACTLY THE WAY HE HAD ALWAYS DONE IT.
EXACTLY THE WAY HE HAD TAUGHT ME.
HE WAS EXACTLY THE GUY WHO NEVER TOOK ANY STEPS, NEVER TOOK THE SHORT ROUTE.
ALWAYS DID EVERYTHING BY THE BOOK, ALWAYS DID IT CORRECTLY.
HE WAS SUCH A RENOWNED METAL FABRICATOR IN THIS AREA.
EVERYONE KNOWS HIS NAME, KNOWS HIS WORK.
I KNOW HE WOULD BE PROUD OF WHERE I BROUGHT THIS BUSINESS AND THAT'S WHAT MAKES ME HAPPY HAPPYIEST THE MOST.
THE MATERIAL THAT WE WORK WITH IS ALL WROUGHT IRON STEEL.
WE WORK WITH SOME STAINLESS STEEL AS WELL.
THE ART THAT WE MAKE IS ALL STAINLESS STEEL, BUT IT'S ALL WROUGHT IRON.
ALL OF THE METAL THAT I USE FOR MY ART, IT'S ALL SCRAP METAL FROM A LOCAL METAL SHOP.
I GO THERE, GOOD FRIENDS WITH THE GUY, HE SELLS ME OFF HIS SCRAP.
AND I TWIST THE STEEL.
IT ALL STARTS IN 20-FOOT LENGTHS.
I CUT IT DOWN, TWIST IT INTO DIFFERENT SHAPES.
IT STARTS OUT WITH SHEETS OF STAINLESS STEEL, AND I'LL BUFF DESIGNS INTO IT AND I'LL TAKE THE STICKS MAYBE A QUARTER INCH SQUARE BAR OR 3/8 SQUARE BAR AND I TWIST THEM WITH MY HAND, INTO VARIOUS CIRCLY SHAPES.
AND THEN KIND OF FIGURE OUT HOW I WANT IT TO SIT ON MY METAL.
AND I'LL USE A TORCH WITH THE STAINLESS STEEL, WHICH BRINGS OUT THE COLORS.
THERE'S A DIFFERENT VARIETY OF THE RAINBOW THAT YOU CAN BRING OUT WITH EAT ON THE STAINLESS STEEL.
AND THAT'S SPECIFICALLY WHY I USE THE STAINLESS STEEL IN THE BACKGROUND.
THAT'S GOT TO BE THE BEST FEELING OUT THERE, IS WHEN YOU HAVE SOMEBODY WHO LOVES THIS STUFF JUST AS MUCH AS YOU DO.
BECAUSE NOT EVERYBODY DOES.
SOME PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, IT DEPENDS ON WHAT YOUR STYLE IS, WHAT YOU LIKE ARTISTICALLY.
SO WHEN SOMEONE COMES AND IS JUST THRILLED ABOUT OUR STUFF, IT HITS SOMETHING SPECIAL INSIDE.
