[Music] the culturally responsive uh library is much like a culturally responsive classroom or School you need to know who your client tail is so they don't care what you know unless they know that you care about them it is a build it's not something that just happens overnight every kid wants to see themselves uh reflected in their school in their classrooms in their libr and when they don't and if they don't I I don't know I imagine it it's just like a little prick every time and for some kids they have a high tolerance those Pricks they can put up with it you know it's like oh I'm just going to get through high school you know other kids they don't have that tolerance and what do they do they stop coming or they come late or you know what I mean it's like avoidance they just try to avoid the situation altogether so so having that uniqueness as you call it that's important people want to be celebrated not just tolerated at this age understanding the development this is something I learned in teacher school like at their age young adolescents they are really motivated by their own self-interest their own you know their clothes their friends their music and so starting with that as a basis how do I I have to stay current with the trends I need to know what's trendy with them so that I can bring that in in an educational fashion um like you said just to gain their interest it I may not stay on that course they may not stay on that course what's popular today or what's trendy today is going to change in a you know just in a hot flash so it's a constant thing to stay current on the technology to stay current on the media that we think will be relative to students but it's something that I have to do that's part of the job is finding out what do students like what do students want and more importantly too what are their teachers having them do because ultimately it's going to come down to that academic progress visit us online at ideast stream.org welcome for more web extras links to resources and to watch the documentary you are welcome creating safe and support of schools a production of idea stream public media
