Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(bright music) - [Narrator] Summer camp, a place where kids can get away and be themselves.
It is an almost indispensable part of summer life.
Every year, camps become a source of fun for kids all across the country.
Summer camps in Indiana are no exception.
There is, however, a unique place which beckons kids not only from across the state, but from around the world.
It is the Woodcraft and senior summer camps in Culver, Indiana.
- All of our programs are what I describe as all activity camps.
Programs where boys and girls come and choose from a multitude of activities, those areas in which they would like to receive instruction.
We provide instruction in about 70 different elective areas.
Our goal really is fun with a purpose.
Kids go to camp in the summertime to have fun, and we want them to come to Culver and have loads of fun.
But while they're having fun, we want them to have a meaningful experience.
We hope that they'll go home, maybe just a little bit better person for having been with us in the summertime.
(bright music) - [Narrator] The Woodcraft camp represents younger kids.
Its major focus has to do with the history of the Native Americans who called this area home over 150 years ago.
- [Fred] Kids in the Woodcraft camp live in cabins.
There are 60 beautiful A-frame cabins in the Woodcraft camp.
10 children to a cabin with a counselor.
Over every five cabins, we have a senior counselor who supervises the work of the counselors in those five cabins.
We also, in the Woodcraft camp, have a wonderful Indian lore program, arts and crafts program, and in all of our programs, we do offer as an elective, some academic subjects.
- Perfect.
Your team is written in.
- [Narrator] On the surface, the Culver Summer Camp looks much like any other summer experience for energetic youngsters.
But for many folks, the thing which sets this place apart is the number of kids who come here from around the world.
- We have boys and girls this summer from 35 different states and 25 different foreign countries participating in our programs.
We don't do any outside recruiting at all.
We don't do any foreign promotion of our program.
All of our youngsters come by word of mouth, happy parents, happy campers, happy alumni telling the story to their friends and neighbors.
- [Narrator] And that's just how campers from all over the world end up here by word of mouth.
- My great uncle lives in Illinois and he had some news about this place.
It's quite famous all over the USA I think.
So we were trying to find something interesting for a summer, like to live a summer differently, to do something together.
Not alone.
To live in academy.
I already did it two years ago and I liked it very much so I decided to come here.
(kids speaking Spanish) - It is almost as if they are drawn here.
Melissa Wright loves the sea.
She helds from Quito, Ecuador.
Each year, more and more of her countrymen make their summer home in Indiana.
- It's a great place.
I've learned a lot.
Culver has taught me a lot of things.
Leadership, teamwork, and the meaning of friendship.
- [Narrator] For Rodrigo Quintana, it's summer number six.
- We have people from other countries here.
You make friends everywhere from everywhere, and we'll be like a big school like this with all the facilities.
A lake, probably like a hundred horses, everything you like, like it's not very common to find.
- [Narrator] If the international flavor of the Culver Summer camps is one reason this place is so unique.
Then the sailing tradition built around Lake Maxinkuckee is another.
The lake, the Navy and sailing are at the hub of a glorious history.
(patriotic music) - [Fred] Our programs first began with 22 midshipmen gathered here on the shores of Lake Maxinkuckee as part of a United States Navy program.
For many years, we were associated with the Navy in our naval school program.
- [Narrator] These days, kids vie for a seat on this ship, a three masted schooner dedicated to teach the ancient art of sailing.
The common thread, which lures kids here from across the country and around the world, far outweighs the grandeur of the wind and waves.
Why have they come?
Well, it's fun of course.
