I'm Satori Shakoor.
Welcome to "Detroit Performs Live: From Marygrove" where Detroit's talented artists take the stage and share insights into their performances.
This episode is curated by our partner organization, WDET.
They brought three local Detroit bands that will knock your socks off.
♪ Whoa ♪ ♪ When I first say you, boy, I could not believe my eyes ♪ ♪ Every little thing you do ♪ ♪ I don't want to get enough of you ♪ ♪ I am really in love with you ♪ ♪ If I can't have you ♪ - So get up and dance.

(upbeat music) - Well, I'm excited to be here with Chris Campbell of WDET.
How are you Chris?
- I'm doing well, so great to see you.
- You too, again.
You too, again.
When people tune WDET and particularly to "Progressive Underground," what can we expect?
- Well, you can expect to hear things that you will not hear anywhere else on terrestrial radio.
They actually let each host handpick, hand curate, everything that we play on the radio.
So everything that you hear on the radio has been meticulously gone through by the host.
You'll hear a diversity of music and you get historical perspectives and context behind the music.
So that's what you get when you listen to WDET.
Not only do you get news and information, but you get a connection to the culture and music as well.
- [Satori] Who are the three bands that you curated for us this evening?
- [Chris] Well, the three bands that have been curated are the Candace Nicole Experience, Monique Ella Rose, and the Laura Rain and the Caesars.
And Candice Nicole is a pianist and a bandleader and Candice Nicole and Friends will bring that kind of Jill Scott, that neo-soul type flavoring with jazzy underpinning.
She calls her Steaz neoclassical soul.
- [Satori] All right.
- [Chris] Now the second act is Monique Ella Rose.
And what's so special about her is that she's produced by globally renowned producer and musician, and artur, Pirahnahead.
Lastly, Laura Rain and the Caesars.
They are what I call Northern soul.
And Northern soul is retro soul.
Basically everything that was coming out in the 60s, that Stacks, Chess, and Motown Records labels, that sound has had a revivalist movement overseas.
And so Laura Rain has taken that sound and sort of put a little Detroit flavor in it.
- Thank you so much, Chris.
- You're welcome.
- And now I'm excited to head to the stage so that we can see the Candace Nicole Experience.

Hi.
- Hi!
- [Satori] I just felt so good listening to your music.
Do you have a mission and message with your music?
- Well, I would say my music is kind of a mood music.
It comes out through, you know, life experiences.
So whatever I'm experiencing at that time in life, I'm going to go sit at the piano and it's going to come out.
Today you heard, "Time Goes On."
You know, a love song between man and woman and how they first met.
And it's kind of those feelings I had when I met, you know, my husband and so it evolved into a true romantic song.
- Where did you meet the players in your band and a little of the stories behind meeting them and including them in your experience?
- We've just been friends for years, you know.
Some of us have been out on the road together, so it's exciting to play with them.
I would say the newest member of the band who's really given a huge performance today was Joe Holliman and he's the drummer.
Wade Talbott is the bass player and he does everything.
He's just fantastic.
Carlton Smith is the guitarist.
And Carlton also has been with me for a long time.
And then the vocalist Kenyata Water.
Kenyata is just beautiful.
Her voice is just angelic.
- And where's the future going to lead you in your music?
- Oh, wow.
Well, there's more to create.
I love the live performance aspect of creating.
Sometimes the studio music is kind of structured and there's no way to really expound on it.
So when you're live just all the elements come together.
So I like to do a lot more live recordings and just get my music out there.
- Thank you so much, Candace Nicole, for your gifts, your talents, and for sharing with us.
- Thank you.
- And now we're headed to the stage for another powerful performance by Monique Ella Rose.

I'm excited to be sitting with you here.
Monique, your voice is amazing.
- [Monique] Thank you so much.
- [Satori] How long have you been performing?
- Ah, man, I've been performing since I was a little girl.
I grew up and, you know, going to church.
My granddad was a pastor and so my cousins and I, you know, we were the choir.
- [Satori] We want our listeners, your audiences, to take from your music?
- You know, my prayer is, and even today, my prayers, every time before I hit the stage, I want to inspire.
I want to encourage, and I want to lift people.
I want to be able to reach them where they are.
And so my music covers various topics, of course, but most of all, I think the listener will find that they can push on and to find the joy.
The song is, "Can't Get Enough."
And that is my single right now.
I am so grateful for the community, for Chris Campbell, Progressive Underground, for WDET, for Detroit.
Everywhere worldwide, it's really doing great in the UK, top 20 on the R&B soul chart.
- [Satori] Did you find the band members?
- Some of them are sung in choirs with, you know, younger, being a teenager.
And so once I decided that I needed background singers for what I was doing in my dreams, then I just tapped on them and said, "Hey, you know, will you guys come help me?"
Felicia, Barbara, whenever I need them, they're always there.
So I'm very grateful for that to have a good crew, you know, good chemistry.
- [Satori] And your future?
- I see my stages getting bigger and bigger.
My thing is to put the action behind my dreams.
And so I've worked hard.
I've worked hard.
And sometimes, you know, it was just like, "Ugh, how much further?"
But yeah, the world will know me.
They would know Monique Ella Rose and they will hear my music.
- [Satori] Thank you so much, Monique.
- [Monique] Thank you for having me.
- All right.
Well, we're going back to the stage for another amazing performance by Laura Rain and the Caesars.

Laura Rain.
And I'm sitting here with her right now.
What inspires your music?
- I think all of my experiences collectively inspire, plus being in Detroit, I think everything comes to a point where, when you are a creative person, and you have to be authentic to yourself and your fans, and I think that's what we try to convey.
Everything we write, my husband, George, and I write everything.
And however we write, whenever we do, it is authentic.
- [Satori] And how would you describe your music?
- You know, I call it Detroit music.
You know, I'm a singer.
For me, the definition of a good singer, good entertainer is someone who conveys emotion.
And if you don't feel like I didn't grab you in the guts after a show, I did not do my job and I didn't work hard enough.
The song was, "If I Can't Have You."
And there was something about the vibe of the song, it reminded me of Marvin Gaye.
It reminded me of Tammi Terrell with this kind of, you know, flirting love affair.
And I can't have you.
It's kind of like this what's going to happen when we're apart and was also a song about loved ones who aren't there and how we wish that we could reach them.
And maybe we do, and maybe they don't leave us.
"If I Can't Have You" was the first song that got written up in SoulTracks.
And then we had all these European DJs contacting us.
That had led to a record deal with a small label in the UK, LRK.
But our music has transformed as we have transformed as creative people.
- Well I am thrilled to have met you and we thank you for being here, sharing your music, and your heart and your life.
So thank you so much.
- Thank you, Satori.
- Thank you for joining us on, "Detroit Performs: Live From Marygrove" and thank you to WDET and Chris Gamble for sharing these three bands with us.
Now make sure to join us next time on, "Detroit Performs: Live From Marygrove" where we will have more powerful performances right here.
See you then!
