Dad> Kenny.
I don't want to go away.
I have to go away.
Mom> Kenny.
He's just going out of town to find a job.
He hasn't been able to find anything here in San Francisco.
He's got to give Portland to try.
Mom> Here's that suit and pants.
Dad> Oh.
Thank you.
Mom> Why, don't you let me take care of this now?
Dad> All right, I'll put on the shoes.
Kenny> But if he finds a job in Portland, he'll have to stay there.
We live here.
Dad> As soon as I find a job, I can look for a place to live.
And then I can send for you.
And your mom.
Kenny> We'll live in Portland instead of San Francisco?
I don't want to live anywhere but here.
I like San Francisco.
Dad> I like San Francisco, too Kenny, I've lived here all my life, but I haven't worked in six months, and I've got to find a job because we need the money.
Mom> Without money, we can't pay the rent, buy groceries, buy anything we need.
I haven't been able to work since I've been sick.
Kenny, your daddy has to find a job no matter where it is.
Dad> Kenny, you know I don't want to go anywhere.
What I'd like to do is stay here with you and your mom.
But I know what I have to do.
♪ ♪ I'm leaving home, ♪ but I won't be gone long.
♪ ♪ I'm going to Portland ♪ to find a new home.
♪ ♪ Though leaving our friends ♪ here will be hard to do.
♪ ♪ Things will work out ♪ if we just want them to.
♪ ♪ Dad> Kenny, while I'm gone, you're going to be the man of the house.
And I'm counting on you to take care of your mom for me.
Kenny> I understand.
Really, I do.
I just don't want you to go away, even for a little while.
Mom> I don't either Kenny.
Kenny> I'll be good while you're gone.
And I'll take care of mom for you.
Dad> Okay.
That's my boy.
♪ You'll be the man until ♪ ♪ we're in our new home.
♪ ♪ And together again.
♪ (can rattling on ground) Mr. Burgess> Hey Kenny.
How are you doing?
Kenny> I'm all right.
Mr. Burgess> What's wrong?
Kenny> Well, my dad's been gone a week now, and I miss him.
Mr. Burgess> Well, I'm sure you do.
But he'll find work soon.
And then you'll all be together again.
Kenny> Well, I want us to be a family.
And a family have to be together.
Mr. Burgess> Well, not always Ken.
You're still a family.
And he's still your dad.
He loves you very much.
And he's just trying to do what's right for all of you.
Kenny> Well, I got to go now.
♪ ♪ Kenny> Mom.
I'm home.
Mom> Hi.
I got a letter from your dad today.
Says he likes Portland.
Kenny> That's nice.
Can I have a glass of milk?
Mom> Sure.
Here's a clean glass for you.
He hasn't found a permanent job yet, but he has been doing some part time work.
And he sent us some money.
We're going to have to go to the store this afternoon.
We're almost out of food.
Got to get some fruit and some eggs for breakfast.
Want to help me clean up before we go?
Kenny> Okay.
Mom> Okay.
♪ Oh, I'd like to buy some ♪ comic books and ice cream bars ♪ ♪ and candy by the pound, ♪ but we'll have to wait ♪ ♪ till dad finds a job.
♪ ♪ We'll have to wait ♪ till we've got the money.
♪ ♪ Then together, ♪ we can buy out the store.
♪ (Car horn honks) Kenny> I like living here in San Francisco.
It's so pretty.
(Horn blows) There's something different to see from every hill.
Walking down the hills is fun.
Some of them are really steep and even have steps.
Dad thinks it's easier to go down these hills than to climb up them.
This part of Lombard Street is the "crooked-iest" street in the whole world.
I like to watch cars drive down the hill.
I bet Portland doesn't have hills like these.
♪ Kenny> Coming to Chinatown is something I like to do.
But it is always so crowded here.
(car horn honks) Dad said that this is the largest Chinese community outside of China.
Here, the people keep many of their traditions.
(gong sounds) ♪ ♪ (Chinese singing) ♪ Kenny> I always liked the Cherry Blossom Parade, in the Japanese area of San Francisco.
It's a fun time.
♪ (Chinese singing) (chanting) ♪ Kenny> The Golden Gate Bridge is one of the longest bridges of its kind ever built.
Even the biggest ships can pass under it.
♪ Dad told me this is one of the largest landlocked harbors in the whole world.
♪ If they were building that bridge now, then maybe dad could work there.
And that way we wouldn't have to leave San Francisco.
Mr. Burgess> Kenny!
Kenny!
Kenny> Mr. Burgess!
Mr. Burgess> Those steps.
Where have you been?
Your mother's been worried sick about you.
Kenny> She is?
I didn't think she'd find out about me not going to school.
I was going to be home on time.
Mr. Burgess> Your teacher called your mother because she thought maybe you were sick.
Your mother didn't know where you were, but she told me sometimes you like to come to Fort Point.
I thought I'd come down and see if you were here.
Kenny> I didn't mean to worry anyone.
I just wanted to see some of the city before we had to leave.
Mr. Burgess> Let's call your mother and tell her you're okay.
Then you and I can go sightseeing.
Okay?
Kenny> Okay.
She says it's okay.
Mr. Burgess> Well, what do you want to do now?
Kenny> Well, I'd like to ride the cable car, but I don't have any money.
Mr. Burgess> This one's on me.
Come on.
(bluegrass music) ♪ Kenny> Cable cars are my dad's favorite thing in the city.
Mr. Burgess> Yeah, they were fun to ride.
♪ Now the people come from far ♪ away to dance all night.
♪ ♪ It was a great thing.
♪ ♪ One would holler do-si-do ♪ ♪ and the other people ♪ were ready to go.
♪ ♪ ♪ ...late in the evening, ♪ about sundown ♪ ♪ (indescernible) ♪ ♪ you can hear it talk ♪ and you can hear it sing ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Now he played only two, ♪ one was "Soldier's Joy" ♪ ♪ Then he played one ♪ called "Bosses' Boy" ♪ ♪ The greatest of all ♪ was "Jennie Lynn" ♪ ♪ to me that's grand, ♪ so he flipped it again.
♪ ♪ ♪ ...late in the evening, ♪ about sundown ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ ...how it would ring.
♪ You can hear it talk.
♪ ♪ You can hear it sing.
♪ ♪ Mr. Burgess> Hang on.
We're going to Fisherman's Wharf.
♪ ♪ I never forget ♪ that mournful day.
♪ ♪ He went up ♪ and was called away.
♪ ♪ ♪ He knew what was down ♪ ♪ ♪ Late in the evening ♪ about sundown... ♪ (Trolley bell dings) (Drums beating) Store worker> ... See that's as far as it'll go.
Hold it like that or you hold it from the leg.
It's the same thing.
Hold the leg.
Is it heavy?
See a difference?
This is a cooked one.
This is a raw one.
See a difference...?
Would you like to buy one?
Kenny> No, not today.
Store worker> You don't want to buy one today?
(indiscernible speech) (accordion plays music) ♪ (birds chirping) Kenny> My dad and I used to come out here a lot.
He said we'd rent one of these boats one day.
We'd go out in the ocean and catch the big fish.
Mr. Burgess> Well, we've got to be getting home.
I'm sure your mother is anxious.
Kenny> Okay.
Kenny> When I move to Portland, I'm really going to miss San Francisco.
>> Yeah, I'm sure you will.
Let's sit down here on the steps for a moment.
Kenny> Everyone who lives here likes it.
My dad never called it San Francisco.
He just called it the city.
Mr. Burgess> Kenny, what are you going to miss most?
If you move to Portland, are you going to miss San Francisco more than you'd miss your dad if he moved there without you?
Kenny> I'd miss my dad the most.
Mr. Burgess> I thought so.
You know, there's good in any place you live, but sometimes you have to look for it.
When your dad settles into his job, he'll be much more comfortable there.
Your mother wants to be able to provide for the family.
And when they're happier, you'll be happier, too.
Kenny> I know.
Mr. Burgess> Well, you better go in now.
I think your mother is probably fixing supper.
Kenny> Thank you for everything, Mr. Burgess.
I had a good time.
I'm really going to miss you when we move.
Mr. Burgess> I'm going to miss you, too, Kenny.
See you later.
(door closes) Mom> Kenny, I was so worried about you.
Kenny> I'm okay now, Mom.
I'm sorry about not going to school.
Mom> Don't ever do that again, Kenny.
Going to school is important.
Kenny> I know.
Mom, I want us to move to Portland to be with dad.
Mom> Good.
I'm glad to hear that.
We got a letter from dad today.
He's found a job.
A good job, and he's found us a house to live in.
A house with a yard and a fence around it.
Kenny, maybe you can even have a dog.
Kenny> A dog of my very own.
Mom> A dog of your own.
Kenny> Mom, I'd want to move to Portland.
Even if I couldn't have a dog.
When can we move?
Mom> Is this weekend soon enough?
♪ Now we've got a home.
♪ ♪ So we'll be together again.
♪ ♪ We've got a dog ♪ ♪ and a yard to play in.
♪ ♪ And together, ♪ ♪ Me and Mom and Dad together.
♪ ♪ We can live anywhere.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪
