Railroads and roadways across South Dakota
From 1862 to 1883, railroad companies built the infrastructure for train travel; soon, train tracks and trains crisscrossed North America, bringing thousands of emigrants to once-remote land. Like horses, trains were replaced by another transportation innovation: the car. As automobiles improved (and became more affordable), so did roads and highways.
