Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- What's remarkable about that, thinking both about these local papers, but also with the Boston Globe, for people outside the business the conventional wisdom lately has been that subscriptions, in particular digital subscriptions, aren't gonna save you, unless you're the New York Times, or the Washington Post.
- No one is going to have the success of a national publication like the Times, the Post, or the Wall Street Journal.
But for the globe, 220,000 people, paying $30 a month once the initial discounts wear off, is quite a revenue stream, and it's something that they can definitely make a go of it on.
And I think that what we're seeing is that a lot of the other big regional papers are also starting to get themselves in saddle, on digital subscriptions.
You could point to the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, the Seattle Times, there's a few others that have done well with this, and then the next phase is can the really local papers do it?
A lot of the very local papers have only just started down this road, so it's really too early to see whether they could make a go of it or not.
