Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship- The state has authorized a number of delivery services, we know that, for adult use cannabis.
It's become part of reality.
Something we have not seen yet, long anticipated marijuana social clubs, a place to go to consume, like a bar for alcohol.
What's the status of pod cafes legally?
- Maybe a "Cheers" with marijuana basically.
Right?
- Yeah.
- I don't think we're becoming Amsterdam anytime soon.
Back in 2019, the Cannabis Control Commission, the agency that regulates in this area, gave a tentative green light to a pilot program, but the governor and the legislature have never warmed to it.
And then, of course, the pandemic hit and all bets are off.
Just in March, a senator from the Cape and Islands, Julian Cyr, proposed a bill in the Senate that would set up a process through voter initiated petitions and/or through local ordinances to actually set up these social consumption sites.
That's at least what they're called.
According to Cyr, in the press at least, he equated the situation to having liquor stores without bars.
You can buy marijuana, but there's no place to congregate.
And there could be lots of downstream public nuisance consequences to that in his view.
- If people have nowhere to go.
What's the current status of the bill, Daniel?
- Well, the Senate punted it over to the Committee on Cannabis Policy.
It's simmering on the back burner.
It could be "Up in Smoke," Joe, we don't know.
- See, on the way in and on the way out.
- Gotta do it.
