Top of the world!
My passion for the outdoors helped me overcome the biggest challenges in my own life.

And now each week, I'll be using those life lessons to help mentor two families, each here with their own deeply personal reasons, as they push themselves physically... - [scream] Colin: ...mentally... - [emotionally] I can't do it.

Kraus family, how you feeling being here?
Man 1: We feel good!
So excited.
Colin: Yeah?
- Sandy, what would you say is the number one reason that you want to bring your family out here?
- Probably the #1 reason is that we've noticed, especially the last couple of years, it's been kind of Hunter and I, and then Michael and Evan.
- So the boys are kind of pairing off and the girls are pairing off a little bit?
Sandy: Exactly, yeah.
She's a mini version of me, and I would say Evan's a mini version of Michael.
[laughing] I do kind of feel like Hunter and I are closer than Evan and I, and that makes my heart sad sometimes.
So I am hoping to pair up with Evan on this trip.
We want to strengthen the bonds between father and daughter and mother and son.
- I always get to spend time with my dad, so I hope that this will be a good opportunity for me to get to spend time with my mom.
Michael: And Hunter's my baby girl.
She's at this stage, she's a teenager, and loves to spend time with her friends.
Colin: Yeah.
- So this is a great opportunity where we could really strengthen our bond and spend time together: father, daughter.
Colin: Yeah.
Hunter: When I was younger, you're a little girl!
It's easier, you know, just to get, like, tossed in the air by Dad, or whatever.
And as you get older, we don't really have anything to connect on.
So this trip will be super important for us to have, like, one thing that we've done together and experienced.

Sandy: So, it's the Colorado state colors because we're from Colorado, woot woot!
Evan: [chuckling] Sandy: And we feel most at home in the mountains so there's a reflection of the home and the mountains, where we tend to do our family bonding.

I'm like, I'm done!
Colin: What would you say is your biggest objective coming out of this experience as a family?
Matt: That we all finish this race together and be supportive of each other 100 percent.
Discouraging or putting each other down can be a normal way of being for us.
If we can get through this challenge and come out the other side fully supportive, it's a huge achievement for us.
Colin: Out here over the course of this competition, you're competing on the same team.
Do you think that's gonna be a little bit of a problem for you?

[all laughing] I definitely think our family's here for personal relationships with each other.
- The relationships with each of my family members, all of them have high highs and low lows.
So I kinda wanna find that middle ground.

- I know that we're gonna have some challenges along the way, but if we stick together, we're gonna be great.
Colin: Okay!
I would love for you guys to tell me about your flag.
Woman 3: So, right in the middle is a camera lens because we are a creative family and a family of photographers.
And around that lens are four arrows which represent a compass because we feel like wherever we wind up in the world, we'll always find our way back home.
- Fantastic.
Well, this is just the beginning.
You'll be going on a challenging 3-day, 13-mile journey across the frozen peaks and the highest mountains in the region.
Day One, you'll travel five and a half miles through dense, Aspen forests and steep, snow-covered passes to safely arrive at your first camp for the night.
Day Two, you'll travel three miles of winding muddy mountainside before reaching a frigid, swampy lake where you'll be faced with a difficult decision of how to get across.
Day Three will take you over five grueling uphill miles to the breathtaking summit over 11,000 feet, before racing down to the finish line where the first family to raise their flag will be declared the winner.
Well, I always find that the true reward is the experience that you're gonna have here as families.

Michael: Power hike, we got this, final stretch down the hill.
Matt: Where to Miles?
Miles: Just come to me the fastest way you can!
And it's the fastest way and I don't think they took it.
Matt: Keep going!
We're making really good time.
Hunter: We got it, guys.
Evan: We're really close.
Oh, there is Colin.
Colin: Hey!
[distant cheering] Hey, you guys!
Kraus family are here.
[cheering] Colin: You are the first to arrive to the finish line area.
Sandy: Yes!
Colin: But you are not finished yet.
Family: Oh no!
Colin: Here's your family flag.
Michael: Yes!
Colin: Erect this flag and you're the winner of the Survivalist challenge.
Mason: Watch out Krauses, here we come!
Miles: Woo!
Michael: Come on, guys, we've got it!
Colin: You guys have overcome a lot of obstacles out here, this is the final challenge.
Miles: Cutting again?
Mason: Yup.
Matt: Way to go, guys!
Colin: Now it's going up!
Let me test it!
Kraus family, you're the winners of Survivalists!
Evan: Pushing, helping everyone, emotional rollercoaster, I'm thrilled.
I'm so excited.
Colin: I promised you these would be waiting at the finish line.
That's $10,000 right there.
Hunter: It feels super good to be done and to win, but also it just feels good to have done that and accomplish that as a family as well.
Sandy: Woo!
Colin: Wow!
Kraus family, how you feeling?
Family: Awesome!
So good, so good.
Hunter: We kind of stuck together today and just pushed through and motivated the parents and nailed it.
My mission through all this was to bond with dad, and I think I did accomplish that.
Michael: I can't be more proud of my little girl.
The bond we have now I think is just stronger than ever.
Even though I want Hunter always to be daddy's little girl, she's a very independent person too.
But no matter what we're there for her as a family.
I'll be there for her as dad.
And I can't wait to spend more time with you.
Hunter: Yeah, it feels great.
Michael: That's awesome.
Colin: You're victorious as Survivalists, [cheering] but also I'd say victorious as coming out here and taking something so beautiful from this experience.
Michael: We'll always be together as a family, no matter where we are.
[fluttering] [Kraus family cheering] Families: Good job!
Good job!
Matt: We may not have won, but what we took away-- Michael: Awesome job, guys!
Matt: We are Survivalists and we proved it.
Laura: Get in here.
[laughter] [cheering] [flapping] Colin: Reoch family, wow, that was down to the wire.
Laura, how are you feeling?
Laura: Disappointed that we didn't make it all the way, first, but they are an incredibly strong family, and to have made it this far and to finish that close, says more about us than I could ever imagine.
Colin: Well it's a testament to your guys' perseverance and your strength that you're standing here at the finish line and you were making up ground all the way to the end.
Miles: We all did our best, and there's no question, no doubt about it.
Colin: Miles, congratulations, you did amazing.
Mason, do you kind of have a newfound respect after what he's shown you out here?
Mason: This little man was hoofin' it the whole way.
HIs little legs were just [trills].
Colin: [laughs] Mason: It was crazy.
But yeah, he made me proud.
He definitely pushed me more than I think he thinks he did, which was not what I expected to happen, but I'm glad it did.
Colin: What do you think are some of the best lessons you've learned from this experience?
Matt: Stick together.
Be supportive of each other.
The reason for our family coming out here was for us all to be more supportive of each other.
We had to work together, trust each other and be positive with each other.
We did that.
Miles: There were moments where it was really hard for us, but we stood strong and we persevered, a month from now, two months from now, we're just gonna be even better than we were.
We're gonna be stronger together.
Colin: That is beautiful.
That's so well said.
I mean, no one can ever take this away from you.
You climbed up to that mountain top and you looked out at this beautiful place and said we did this as a family.
Matt: We're gonna take that and put that back into our home, and we're gonna remind each other of this experience, so that we can continue to be encouraging of each other going forward.
Colin: Well done, I'm so proud of you guys.
Miles: Thank you.
[applause] - Good job, guys.
