Unlike their more violent Sons of Liberty counterpart, the Daughters of Liberty were a group of colonial women supporting nonviolent resistance to British tyranny.
From 1766 into the 1770s, they used their purchasing power to boycott British goods, turning homespun clothing, locally crafted tea, and a lack of British luxury items into political action.
Both the Sons and Daughters of Liberty helped plan the Boston Tea Party, including co-founder Sarah Bradlee Fulton, also known as the Mother of the Boston Tea Party.
Later during the Revolutionary War, she carried crucial messages to officials like General Washington.
The Daughters organized during a time when women weren't allowed to take office or contribute to American policy.
Even so, they found agency and success within the confines of their gender roles, transforming women's impact on local and global economies into political power.
