[cheering and applause] - I uh, I just wanted to explain before I start, that this whole thing began about a year ago when I was just putting my cellphone, and when I was bored in a hotel room or whatever, I was just singing Dylan songs with a mic, like I used to sing when I was 15 or 16 in a folk club.
I wasn't expecting it to be an album, or a TV show or anything.
Uh, I don't know if any of you saw any of those little cellphone films.
[crowd cheering and applauding] Anyway, so then I didn't play them since then.
Uh, till yesterday afternoon.
[audience laughing] So... [clears throat] I'd like to say, you know, I'm very humbled as a songwriter to even stand here and sing Bob Dylan songs, which is one of the great masters, if not the master, and a great hero of mine.
And, uh, weirdly enough, I was stood waiting for the singer to come back to a control room in 1985.
I was recording an Irish guy, an Irish boy.
And the receptionist called through to the control room and said, "Bob Dylan's on the phone for Dave Stewart."
I was like, "Yeah, right."
[crowd laughing] I said, it's this Irish kid winding me up.
But I answered the phone and there was nobody could have imitated that voice.
I knew immediately it was Bob.
And we went out that night and we struck up, struck up a friendship, and many, many adventures of which I'll tell you some as we go along.

[cheers and applause] I only met them for the first time yesterday apart from... ...this lady here who I realized was conducting me with an orchestra outside the Tower of London.
It was about 15 years ago, right?
Before television, right?

♪ ♪ "Come in," she said, ♪ ♪ "I'll give you shelter from the storm" ♪ [upbeat music] ♪ In a little hilltop village, they gambled for my clothes ♪ ♪ I'll bargain for salvation an' they gave me a lethal dose ♪ ♪ I offered up my innocence and got repaid with scorn ♪ ♪ "Come in," she said, ♪ ♪ "I'll give you shelter from the storm"♪ [upbeat music] ♪ Well, I'm livin' in a foreign country ♪ ♪ But I'm bound to cross the line ♪ ♪ Beauty walks a razor's edge, someday I'll make it mine ♪ ♪ If I could only turn back the clock ♪ ♪ to when God and her were born ♪ ♪ "Come in," she said, ♪ ♪ "I'll give you shelter from the storm" ♪ [upbeat music] [cheers and applause] - So that last song, yeah, I always think about my wife when I play that because, ah, you know, when you go as Annie describes it, you know, we're tied to the front of this... rocket ship and huddled out there, and then you're dealing with all sorts of craziness.
And it's like finding that place to be and that person to be with forever, you know, it's like... Well, she's here tonight, Anoushka, somewhere.
[cheering and applauding] And um, we've been together 26 years.
Well, we've been together nearly 30 years, but we've been married for 25 or 26.
We had the strangest wedding ever but, um... (chuckles) It was standing on a plinth on the sea... on a very windy day, um... We were married by a guy called Deepak Chopra and, um... And I won't explain the rest of the wedding, but, (grunts).
I'll tell you a little bit about it, Ann.
[crowd laughing] Me and Bono and the Edge would always go to this place on the beach in the south of France and uh, they made this drink.
[clears throat] An ancient drink that was, um, I don't know how to explain it.
It was like ecstasy.
[crowd laughs] But it was made out of organic stuff, but I, I mean it really worked, right?
[crowd laughs] And so I suggested this was the drink to be served.
And this lovely friend of mine, he's passed away now, called Roger.
We didn't allow anybody in, you know, but all the people there were taking films, and pictures, you know?
And he secretly got all of them together, and edited a beautiful movie.
During the movie, you can see it start off, everybody's like chipper and chatting.
And as it went on, all their movements started to be like this.
[audience laughs] And then I noticed people were going up to, the person that wasn't their husband or wife, going, I love you, you know?
[audience laughing] And uh, it turned into this kind of love fest.
Anyway, at the end of this film, Dylan sings "Forever Young."

So Bob and I would hang out.
Do all sorts of things, I mean, adventures.
And sometimes he would turn up and say, "Hey, let's make a film tomorrow."
And he wanted to have, a young-looking Elizabeth Taylor in it.
Part of it.
But he wanted to have an argument with her in it.
And then, yeah, I won't go into details.

Eh, so I got this film made, and it killed me.
And, uh... [clears throat] And I got, uh, Mike Campbell.
They managed to get a church on Highland in Los Angeles empty with a shaft of light coming in the window.
Bob's sitting there singing and playing it.
And it's really cool looking, if you want to see it.
But anyway, this song is called "Emotionally Yours."

And, uh... it's weird because I went to Bob's site, which is amazing.
One of the best websites ever for just finding the song and the lyric and all that kind of stuff.
But there's one part line I thought, no, Bob would never have written that line, so I rang up his manager and I rang up the office and I go, there's one line here, it doesn't seem like he would say that.
And uh... [chuckles] And I was like, I felt really bad because I mean, obviously.
But, um... And then they changed it.
"No, actually you're right, that's wrong.
It's this other line."
So, I... [chuckles] So I am singing the right line.
I just want...
I didn't want to be singing the wrong line, you know.
Um, so anyway, this is ah, called "Make You Feel My Love."

That was brilliant.
And, I'll tell you a beautiful story about Bob before I play this, okay?
So when I was in London and he was coming to this, I'd sort of converted a church into a studio with this lovely guy called, Mike Cronin.
I think he's sitting over there.
Hey, man!
[cheer and applause] Uh, he was only 19 at the time, so he was not exactly designing the thing, but it turns him on so much to making studios.
He's made just about every one Blackbird Studio, Taylor Swift's studio, Chris Stapleton's studio.
Like studios in Russia, studios in China, studios in your back garden when you don't know it.
And, uh...
Anyway, um...
So one time uh, Bob and I were hanging about, uh, in this church place and Bob said, "Oh, I'd like to get a lift back to the hotel."
And I said to my friend, I said, "Here's my car keys, can you drive them back?"
And I didn't sort of notice the panic look on my friend's face, but anyway, he had um, dyslexia and so he couldn't read signs.
He only knew the way, you know?
If I was going there, he knew that way or where.
So about 45 minutes later, I get a phone call from the reception in the studio.
Going, "It's Bob on the phone for you."
I said, "Okay."
And, uh...
But first it was the driver and he said, "Dave, you know I can't read."
And I was like, "Uh, o-oh.
Okay" So then Bob comes on the phone.
He's like, "Um, yeah, uh, Dave?"
I go, "Yeah."
"Am I in this place called, Luton?"
Now, Luton is way outside of London, right?
So his hotel was in the center of London so... [audience laughing] [clears throat] But uh, I went, "Oh, so sorry, I forgot my friend doesn't read."
[audience laughing] [chuckles] He said, "Oh, I see.
Okay."
So he got in the front.
My friend got out what's called an, ankerwechsel.
It's like a road map book back then and uh, no GPS.
And um, he sat next to my friend who didn't know anything about Bob Dylan.
Didn't really know who he was, really.
Just a guy with a curly hair.
And, uh... And the next day my friend said, "Oh, Bob's an interesting guy, what a life."
He said, "He told me his whole life story from when he was a kid right up to now, all the way as he directed me back to his hotel in there."
And I was, "Bloody hell.
Every journalist in the world would chop your arm off for that."
[audience laughing, applauding] Well, isn't that a sweet thing to do?
He wasn't like, oh, in a bad mood or anything, he just, [chuckles] He probably thought, "Oh great, he can't read, he's not going to write about this."
[crowd laughing] [chuckles] No, it's true though, right?
Um, you're lucky you're a journalist trying to get an answer out of Bob and I don't blame him.
Imagine being hurtled into greatness, and, you know, virtually put on a pedestal like God-like when you're so young.
Imagine singing at Civil Rights movements, singing "The Lonesome Death" of Hattie Carroll when you're like so young.
Imagine all those things and then trying to deal with, you know, life, like going to buy some bread or something.
[sniffs] Anyway, uh, sorry, I'm wandering off here.
But, um...
So what's this song again?

You thought it was all a sweet dream.
Da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da-da... [audience laughs] - Well, you know, I started learning the guitar by, [sniffs] I won't go into the long story, but basically, I was [bleep] and my friend.
No, I don't mean it that way, I mean... Somebody had broken my leg.
I only wanted to be a football player or a soccer player.
We have to say in America.
And, uh... [clears throat] And then the same month, I had the operation on my knee.
My mum left my dad.
My brother went to college.
My dad was depressed.
So I'm bored out of my mind.
I wasn't interested in music at all.
This is 1966, I was 14.
And there was these records, you know, that my brother had left behind.
There was two Bob Dylan albums, and my cousin who'd escaped to Memphis.
He was 9 years older and he'd sent some, a couple blues albums and some Levi corduroy trousers which we'd never seen before up there, you know?
We were still wearing, like, rags the Vikings left behind.
[audience laughing] [chuckles] So... My dad had made a homemade record player.
I thought, "I'm so bored, I'll put one of these on."
One was Robert Johnson, King of the Delta Blues singers.
I couldn't even work out it was music at the time.
Even though years later, I went and made a film called, "Deep Blues" because it so changed my life.
But I put it on and I went into a trance.
That's another story, but anyway, then I put on the Bob Dylan one that me brother left behind.
And I just about fell off my seat at the words that were coming out of his mouth.
And he was doing this thing... [guitar finger picking] And I was like, "What the hell?
How does he do that?"
My brother had left a guitar in a wardrobe with five strings on it when he went away.
So I hobbled up to get that.
I got this guitar and I couldn't work out anything.
It was like... [plays notes on guitar] I said okay I could work on two strings because it sounded a bit like the blues.
Anyway, so I heard this finger picking thing.
And you got to imagine for me as a kid, not liking music, suddenly, I sort of understand, "Oh, there's this other thing besides football."
So I went in the kitchen and put the radio on.
It was 1964 in Britain, we only had three radio stations.
And it was blasting out The Kinks, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Beatles.
So I feel very blessed to be born at that time when this is what was coming out of the radio.
I'm not saying there's anything wrong with music today.
I, I love lots of independent music today, and lots of, you know, classic music.
But I mean it was pretty mind-blowing, you know?
And I started to play the guitar, and my dad was so worried about me.
Because he thought I'd concaved one side of my chest by playing it ten hours a day like that.
He took me to the doctor.
And I take my shirt off.
It's embarrassing, you know, when you're 14.
And uh, my dad said, "Look at his chest."
And the doctor said, "Yeah."
He said, "Isn't it bent from the guitar?"
I knew that my dad just wanted me to stop.
It was driving him mad.
[audience laughs] And the doctor said, "No, he's fine."
Anyway.
[audience laughing] My dad says, "I'll give you a five quid."
[audience laughing] Anyway, ah, so the first song I learned how to finger pick, it's a long story but I won't go on but...
The first song I learned, [sniffs] was Mississippi John Hurt, you know, with... [fingerpicking guitar] And I realized that Bob was doing the same kind of thing with... [fingerpicking guitar] Whether he was singing, you know, whatever he was singing, [sniffs] I realized, oh, the connection to the blues.
Anyway, I won't go on.
So this is the first one I wrote, and I went to sing it at a folk club.
When I was 14 or 15, I looked about 12.
So in the northeast, the folk clubs or in pubs.
I suppose they were here as well.
And uh, they wouldn't let me in.
And I would stand outside all the time in the freezing going, [fingerpicking guitar] Till in the end, this guy after about the fourth week, said, "Okay, kid, come in."
I came in, I was like, "Wow, amazing."
People smoking cigarettes, drinking... And all the folk singing then was people with their hand in their ear because it's shipbuilding and coal mining town.
And they'd go, "Well, me going down the mine and...
So I get up, looking about 12 and I sing this... [cheering and applauding] This is an amazing thing about Nashville, a classic thing about Nashville so, about five days ago or less, even, I'm having ah, some brunch with my wife in this place.
And a chap walks over and he goes, "Hey, are you Dave Stewart?"
Well, he didn't say it like that.
He said it in an American accent, but... [audience laughs] I said, "Yeah."
He said, "Oh yeah, I like your music."
And I said, "Are you a musician?"
He said, "Yeah."
I said, "What do you play?
And who do you play with?"
He said, "I play with Willie Nelson."
I said, "Oh yeah."
I said, "How long you been doing that?"
He said, "50 years."
[audience laughing] Anyway, he's here now called, Mickey Raphael.
So I want him to get up here and play the harmonica.
