Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship>> YOU GOT TO FEEL SORRY FOR US HUMANS.
WE ARE SO GOOD AT SHAPING THE WORLD, AND YET WHEN IT COMES TO PRESERVING OUR OWN LIKENESSES FOR POSTERITY, WE ARE CURSED WITH A FATAL FLAW.
THE NOSE.
IT JUST STICKS OUT TOO FAR.
YOU CAN SEE IT IN THE SPHYNX.
YOU CAN EVEN SEE IT IN OUR OWN SCHEDULE SCHEDSKELETONS.
THE NOSE ALWAYS CRUMBLES FIRST.
AND YES, IT COULD BE WORSE.
FOR THE DUST BIN OF HISTORY AND ALIEN ARCHAEOLOGISTS WHO APPARENTLY DON'T AVE ANY NOSES THEMSELVES WILL BE FORCED TO ENDLESSLY SPECULATE ABOUT WHATEVER STRANGE APPENDAGES THEY THINK EMERGED FROM THOSE ALL TOO COMMON STUMPS.
IMAGINE HOW DISPOINTED THEY'LL BE IF THEY LEARN IT WAS NOTHING MORE THAN A SMALL ROUNDED LUMP OF FLESH ONLY SLIGHTLY TOO LARGE FOR THE BONDING PROPERTIES OF MOST CARVING MATERIALS.
WHICH BRINGS US BACK TO THE PRESENT.
BECAUSE THE NEXT TIME YOU SECRETLY STICK A FINGER UP YOUR NOSE, DO NOT FEEL SHAME.
YOU ARE MAKING CONTACT WITH ONE OF HE GREAT MYSTERIES OF THE FUTURE COSMOS.
YOU ACTUALLY KNOW THE UNKNOWABLE NOSE.
AND WHAT A PROFOUND EXPERIENCE THAT TRULY IS.
