In recent years, there's been a push to make Daylight Saving time permanent.
But one sleep expert we spoke to says that would be a move in the wrong direction.
He says at Standard time, we need to adapt permanently to give us more sunlight at the start of our day.
Our bodies were designed to live under normal sun time, right, with noon being peak sun.
All of the evidence supports permanent standard.
Time is better than permanent daylight saving because permanent Standard time will mean right an hour earlier.
Morning light is more important than evening light.
Evening light could have some benefits, too.
But morning light, the evidence is overwhelming.
It's much better for setting your circadian clock in sync with your sleep and wake for performance.
A number of performance measures.
This is true for people suffering from depression, whether a seasonal affective type depression when wet like winter days when they get shorter or less sun total or even general depression.
People do better with morning light and also just general performance and alertness.
And especially younger people.
Teenagers we know already struggle with school times, overwhelming evidence that later start times for high schools, for example, do better.
That's why every society that the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Pediatrics and pretty much every scientific group that's looked at this insightful research on biological rhythms all have supported Standard Time over Daylight Savings.
Last year, the U.S. Senate passed the Sunshine Protection Act, making daylight Saving Time permanent across the U.S..
The House has not passed the measure.
