Two Newark firefighters were killed in the initial response to fire
The deadly fire aboard a vehicle transport ship docked in Port Newark is contained. Heavy smoke wafted through the nearby area from the massive fire aboard the cargo ship, which held about 1,200 cars and trucks. The Coast Guard said that no air quality concerns were caused by the blaze, and no oil or chemical spills had been detected in the surrounding water.

Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipthe deadly massive fire aboard a vehicle cargo ship docked in Port Newark is finally contained two Newark firefighters Wayne Brooks Jr and Augusto akovu were killed in the initial response to the blaze last Wednesday night their funerals are scheduled for later this week a GoFundMe page organized by the Newark firefighters Union to benefit their families has raised more than a hundred thousand dollars so far six other firefighters were injured responding to the fire which continued burning in the upper decks of the Grande Casa de avorio into the weekend Elizabeth firefighter Warren white was one of the injured but on Friday he was able to walk out of the burn center at cooperman Barnabas in Livingston to Applause the ship was carrying about 1200 cars and trucks smoke from the fire wafted through the nearby area smelling of burning rubber and melting plastic the Coast Guard though says there are no air or water quality concerns the ship is now stable and Port Newark channel has fully reopened according to the Port Authority the port largely continued to operate as normal during the fire response the fact that this fire was aboard a ship made for a very complicated situation yet our First Responders adapted and Rose to the occasion and once again they have proven that we have the world's best bless you firefighters and First Responders and we all marvel at their remarkable skilled professionalism and courage but sadly we continue to mourn the loss of Augusto Augie akabu and Wayne bear Brooks Jr the two Newark firefighters who gave what President Abraham Lincoln called and I quote the president the last full measure of devotion [Music] [Music]
