After a two year hiatus, the annual Simbang Gabi tradition at Seattle's St. James Cathedral drew hundreds of Filipino Catholics from 65 parishes across western Washington.
The term Simbang Gabi in Filipino means night mass and it's traditionally held at dawn or in the evening.
It started in the 1500s when the Spanish came to the Philippines.
The pageantry of the celebration includes par ls, star-shaped lanterns that represent guiding lights for Jesus to come home, and are used as part of the procession.
At the end, the Archbishop instructs parish leaders to return to their parishes and start the novena, a form of devotion and prayer consisting of special services for nine days.
I'm Starla Sompaco, this story is part of a Crosscut series on holiday celebrations.
