Just days before the US House passed the Respect for Marriage Act, protecting marriage rights for same sex and interracial couples, Washington celebrated its own anniversary.
10 years since it became one of the first states to legally recognize gay marriage.
In light of this, Crosscut caught up with Emily and Sarah Cofer, the first gay couple to legally wed in Seattle.
Worried that the state might repeal the law, they wanted to get married as soon as possible so they could be certain that they were treated as legally-equal parents of their daughter Carter in case anything went wrong medically, or otherwise.
10 years later, they've noticed that reactions from their neighbors in Arlington have changed dramatically.
People no longer look at them strangely in response to their relationship.
