The Swinomish Tribe wants to resurrect clam gardening.
When Swinomish harvesters reported declines of littleneck and butter clams within traditional shellfish areas, tribal members grew concerned.
These are traditional foods important for both nutrition and culture.
Tribal members are preparing to build a clam garden along a section of Kiket Island, a tiny island in Skagit Bay just northwest of La Conner.
It will be the first modern-day clam garden in the United States.
A clam garden is different from an aquaculture farm in that it's an indigenous practice done mostly for subsistence.
According to Swinomish environmental health specialist Larry Campbell, shellfish beds are important gathering places for sharing stories and skills.
Rejuvenating this historic cultural practice could turn the tide for shellfish harvesting for the tribe.
