ARIZONA CONGRESSWOMAN ADELITA GRIJALVA WAS SWORN IN TODAY.

>> I DO.
>> CONGRATULATIONS, YOU'RE NOW A MEMBER OF CONGRESS.
[CHEERS AND APPLAUSE] .
>> Ted: GRIJALVA WAS ADMITTED TO CONGRESS BY THE SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE, MIKE JOHNSON WHO DELAYED THE SWEARING IN BY MORE THAN SEVEN WEEKS AFTER GRIJALVA WON A SPECIAL ELECTION TO FILL THE SEAT OF HER LATE FATHER RAUL GRIJALVA.
>> IT HAS BEEN 50 DAYS SINCE THE PEOPLE OF ARIZONA'S 7TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT ELECTED ME TO REPRESENT THEM.
50 DAYS THAT OVER 800,000 ARIZONANS HAVE BEEN LEFT WITHOUT ACCESS TO THE BASIC SERVICES THAT EVERY CONSTITUENT DESERVES.
THIS IS AN ABUSE OF POWER.
ONE INDIVIDUAL SHOULD NOT BE ABLE TO UNILATERALLY OBSTRUCT THE SWEARING IN OF A DULY ELECTED MEMBER OF CONGRESS FOR POLITICAL REASONS.
[APPLAUSE] .
>> Ted: IT INDEED WAS THE LONGEST SUCH DELAY IN MODERN U.S.
HISTORY WITH THE SPEAKER DENYING ADMITTANCE WHILE THE HOUSE WAS OUT OF SESSION DUE TO THE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN, BUT THERE'S NOW A DEAL TO END THE SHUTDOWN AND TODAY THE SPEAKER SAID NO HARD FEELINGS.
>> I REALLY LIKE THIS LADY.
SHE'S GOING TO BE AN EXCELLENT MEMBER OF CONGRESS, SHE'S A GREAT PERSON.
I TOLD HER ON THE WAY IN THAT SHE FILLS HER FATHER'S SHOES AND NO ONE CAN.
>> NO ONE CAN.
>> HE WAS A GIANT AROUND HERE AND SERVED HIS STATE I SERVED UNDER HIM IN THE NATURAL RESOURCES COMMITTEE FOR A WHILE AND ADMIRED THE WORK AND HE WAS TENACIOUS.
SHE WAS A PROUD FAMILY LEGACY AND WE'RE DELIGHTED TO HAVE HER HERE.
>> Ted: BUT CONGRESSWOMAN GRIJALVA LEFT NO TIME BY SIGNING A DOCUMENT TO RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES.
>> E-MAILS SHOWING THAT TRUMP NEW MORE ABOUT EPSTEIN'S ABUSES THAN HE PREVIOUSLY ACKNOWLEDGED.
IT'S PAST TIME FOR CONGRESS TO RESTORE ITS ROLES AS A CHECK AND BALANCE ON THIS ADMINISTRATION AND TO FIGHT FOR WE, THE AMERICAN PEOPLE.
THAT'S WHAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE EXPECT US TO DO, FIGHT FOR THEM.
THAT IS WHY I WILL SIGN THE DISCHARGE PETITION RIGHT NOW TO RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES.
>> Ted: ADELITA GRIJALVA NOW OFFICIALLY THE FIRST LATINA AND FIRST CHICANA IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES REPRESENTING ARIZONA.
AND THE BILL TO END THE LONGEST SHUTDOWN IN U.S.
HISTORY.
SEVERAL DEMOCRATS BROKE RANKS AND SIGNED THE DEAL AND LOOKING AT THE POLITICAL FALLOUT.
MATT GRODSKY AND WES GULL LET OF OH STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS.
>> THANKS FOR HAVING US.
>> Ted: DID THE DEMES FOLD AND IF SO, WHY?
>> THE DEMS DIDN'T FOLD, THEY WALKED INTO A BOOK DOOR, THEY TOOK A BAD DEAL ON THE PREMIUMS.
THEY HAVE A LOT TO LOOK FORWARD TO FROM THE MESSAGING PERSPECTIVE AND YOU'VE GOT TO HOLD THE REPUBLICANS ACCOUNTABLE AND AND IF YOU DO HAVE A VOTE, MAKE SURE IT'S THE RIGHT WAY TO PROTECT AMERICANS.
THE OTHER OBNOXIOUS, A BIG WEEK WITH BIG WINS AND WE DIDN'T HAVE A WEEK.
AND YOU HAVE TO MOVE AS ONE BODY INSTEAD OF INDEPENDENTS.
>> AND DO YOU THINK THEY CAPITULATED?
>> THEY MADE A TERRIBLE MISTAKE, PUT US THROUGH THE LONGEST SHUTDOWN IN HISTORY ONLY TO DO WHAT THEY COULD HAVE DONE ON THE FIRST DAY OF THE SHUTDOWN.
AND IT'S OUTRAGEOUS PUT PEOPLE THROUGH THIS.
HAVE SNAP BENEFITS DENIED TO PEOPLE WHO ARE HUNGRY, IT'S UNBELIEVABLE AND THEN FOR THE DEMOCRATS TO CAVE AND THEN FOR THE DEMOCRATS NOT TO BE ABLE TO ARTICULATE ANYTHING IS RIDICULOUS.
>> Ted: HAVE THE DEMOCRATS BEEN ABLE TO SUCCESSFULLY ARTICULATE WHAT THEY DID THEN AND NOW?
>> I THINK THEY'VE BEEN SUCCESSFUL IN ARTICULATING IT THROUGH THE ENTIRE PROCESS.
IT'S NOT THE DEMOCRATS' SHUTDOWN, IT'S THE REPUBLICAN SHUTDOWN, THEY OWN THE GOVERNMENT.
THIS IS A PRESIDENT WHO TRIED TO EXACERBATE PAIN AT THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT LEVEL SINCE HE TOOK OFFICE SO I DON'T AGREE WITH THE STANDPOINT THAT THIS IS SOMEHOW IN DEMOCRATS', YOU KNOW, COURT.
THE OTHER THING IS WE'VE BEEN WINNING THE POLLING ON THIS.
A LOT OF AMERICANS HAVE UNDERSTOOD OUR POSITION AND I THINK THAT WAS EVIDENT IN THE RESULTS FROM LAST TUESDAY.
>> Ted: IF YOU'RE WINNING THE POLLING ON THIS AND SUCCESS IN THE LAST ELECTION, WHAT HAPPENED?
>> YOU'D HAVE TO ASK THOSE EIGHT INDIVIDUALS WHO DECIDED TO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF FUN ON SUNDAY NIGHT.
>> WHAT HAPPENED, TED, WE FOUND OUT WHO THE MOST POWERFUL PEOPLE IN AMERICA ARE AND THAT'S THE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS.
AS SOON AS THEY QUIT WORKING, WE GO BACK TO WORK, AMERICA DOES.
AND SO, IN THE FUTURE, WHY DON'T WE JUST CALL THE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS AND SAY, WHAT SHOULD WE DO BECAUSE THEY'RE CONTROLLING WHAT WE'RE GOING TO END UP DOING.
>> Ted: I WANT TO GET BACK TO THE DEAL.
SHOULD DEMOCRATS TRUST REPUBLICANS WHEN THEY SUGGEST THEY PLEDGE THAT THEY WILL HOLD A VOTE ON THESE EXTENDED SUBSIDIES FOR ACA, THE PANDEMIC ERA SUBDY SUBSIDIES, AND B, IS THERE ANY CHANCE IT WILL SUCCEED?
>> NO, IT'S POSTURING THAT'S RIDICULOUS.
THEY'RE NOT GOING TO-- IF THEY GET A VOTE SOMETIME IN THE EVENTUAL, WHO KNOWS WHEN, THEY'RE GOING TO LOSE THE VOTE AND IF IT GOES TO THE HOUSE, EVEN IF THIS HE WIN IN THE SENATE IT GOES OVER TO THE HOUSE AND THE HOUSE IS NOT GOING TO DO THAT.
IT'S A MEANINGLESS THING AND THE DEMOCRATS CAN'T EVEN EXPLAIN IT AND SO, YOU KNOW, IT'S JUST UNBELIEVABLE.
WHAT WE NEED IS, WE NEED TO REALLY REEXAMINE WHERE WE ARE AS A COUNTRY AND WHAT WE'RE DOING AND THROW ALL THE BUMS OUT.
>> Ted: WELL, THERE'S AN ARGUMENT FOR THAT AND IT'S A DIFFERENT SEGMENT ON A DIFFERENT PROGRAM, BUT YOU'RE A DEMOCRAT, CAN YOU EXPLAIN IT?
>> YEAH, I CAN EXPLAIN IT.
THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY IS TRYING TO GET THE REPUBLICANS TO DO THE RIGHT THING.
TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION, NO, YOU CAN'T TRUST THEM AT ALL THEY'VE DECEIVED THE AMERICAN PEOPLE WHEN IT COMES TO AFFORDABILITY AND HEALTH CARE, AND PEOPLE LIKE TO SAY WE'RE IN THE POLITICAL WILDERNESS SINCE 2024, THAT MIGHT BE TRUE, BUT AS LAST WEEK'S ELECTION SHOWED WE'RE MAKING PROGRESS AGAINST THEM.
WE'RE TRYING TO SHOW THERE'S A RIGHT WAY TO DO THINGS AND A WRONG WAY TO DO THINGS AND THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS CHOOSE BEING TIME AND TIME AGAIN TO HURT PEOPLE AND DO THE WRONG THING.
>>.
>> Ted: I WANT A BETTER ANSWER THAN A GROUP OF REPUBLICANS, AND THEY DECIDED TO HAVE FUN ON SUNDAY NIGHT.
WHAT HAPPENED?
>> THESE ARE INDIVIDUALS THAT AREN'T UP FOR REELECTION-- >> WHERE WAS THE LEADER?
>> THEY WERE NOT UP FOR REELECTION AND NOT A LOT OF RISK TO THEM AND I THINK THAT'S WHY YOU SEE CANE CAINE, LOOK, I DON'T HAVE A LOT TO LOSE HERE AND THE AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS, THEY HAD ENOUGH ROOM TO BUCK THE PARTY WHICH I THINK WAS A HUGE MISTAKE.
>> Ted: PLEASE.
>> YOU KNOW, THERE NEEDS TO -- THE PROBLEM ON THE DEMOCRAT PARTY HAS RIGHT NOW IS A LACK OF LEADERSHIP.
THEY'RE NOT SOLIDLY IN STEP ON MESSAGE, THEY'RE NOT SOLIDLY IN STEP ON HOLDING THE LINE.
THEY'RE NOT SOLIDLY IN STEP ON ANYTHING AND THEY HAVE A BRILLIANT OPPORTUNITY TO DO, CHANGE LIKE THEY DID IN VIRGINIA TO MAKE SIGNIFICANT CHANGE, BUT THEY CAN'T DO IT BECAUSE THEY CAN'T -- IT'S LIKE A CIRCULAR FIRING SQUAD, UNBELIEVABLE.
>> Ted: CAN YOU ARGUE THAT REPUBLICANS ARE SOLIDLY IN STEP.
>> 100%.
>> Ted: WITH A BUNCH OF THINGS THAT THE AMERICAN PEOPLE IS INCREASINGLY SAYING WE'RE GETTING SICK OF THIS.
>> WE'LL SEE ABOUT THAT, WE'LL SEE IN THE MIDTERM ELECTIONS BECAUSE THE DIFFERENCE IS, THE REPUBLICANS HAVE THE ABILITY TO QUICKLY AND SIMPLY PUT THEIR MESSAGE ON HAT, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN, AND THAT GUY IS NOT GOING ANYWHERE.
IN SO IF HE -- AND THE DEMOCRATS CAN'T ANSWER THAT AND THAT'S THE PROBLEM.
THE DEMOCRATS NEED TO BE ABLE TO ANSWER THAT.
WHAT DO WE WANT?
HOW DO YOU GET-- YOU KNOW, YOU CAN'T EXPLAIN IT IN 20 MINUTES, YOU'VE GOT TO EXPLAIN IT IN TWO SECONDS.
>> Ted: AN ELEVATOR EXPLANATION.
IT CAN BE ARGUED THAT PEOPLE ARE CHOOSING MAGA, A REPUBLICAN PARTY POLICY, THEY MAY NOT BE ALL THAT HAPPY ABOUT IT, AND WE TALKED ABOUT EVANGELICALS STARTING TO QUIETLY QUIT TRUMP AND MAGA, WHERE DO THEY GO?
>> THAT'S THE OPPORTUNITY FOR DEMOCRATS IN BATTLE GROUND STATES, IT'S THE SWING VOTERS AND DISAFFECTED VOTERS AND TO OUR TENT.
WHAT WES HIT ON, WE HAVE A PROBLEM WITH MESSAGING IN THIS ERA, BUT WE'RE THE ALTERNATIVE TO OUR BENEFIT IN THE MIDTERMS, THERE'S A CONSISTENT WHIPLASH, ALWAYS MAD AT WHO IS IN POWER.
THEY'RE GOING TO KEEP GOING BACK AND FORTH AND IT'S UPON US TO LEGISLATE WHERE THEY CAN SEE THE TANGIBLE DIFFERENCE AND COMMUNICATE WHAT THAT LOOKS LIKE.
>> Ted: SO FROM A DEMOCRATIC PERSPECTIVE HERE, WINNERS AND LOSERS FROM THIS WHOLE SHUTDOWN BUSINESS.
>> I THINK THE LOSERS ARE THE AMERICAN PEOPLE THE STANDPOINT THEIR PREMIUMS ARE GOING THROUGH THE ROOF AND THE PARTY IN POWER WILL DO NOTHING ABOUT IT.
>> I THINK THE DEMOCRATS HAD A DISASTROUS LOSS AND THEY NEED TO GET THEIR ACT TOGETHER QUICKLY, QUICKLY BECAUSE IT'S NOT SUSTAINABLE AND THE REPUBLICANS ARE GOING TO RIDE ROUGH SHOD OVER THEM.
>> Ted: ALL RIGHT, MATT GRODSKY AND WEST GULLETT, APPRECIATE YOU HAVING YOU HERE.

RECENTLY APPROVED A NEW DEVICE THAT CAN MORE EASILY REPLACE HEART VALVES FOR PATIENTS CONSIDERED TOO SICK FOR SURGERY.
WE WELCOME THE FIRST CARDIOLOGIST TO USE THIS DEVICE, DR.
PAUL SORAJJA FROM THE BANNER UNIVERSITY IN PHOENIX.
THIS IS GOING GREAT GUNS.
THIS IS TO REPLACE DAMAGED HEART VALVES.
FIRST OF ALL, WHAT ARE THE HEART VALVES AND WHAT DO THEY DO?
>> THE HEART VALVES-- THANKS SO MUCH FOR HAVING ME.
THE HEART VALVES ARE LIFESAVING PIECES OF OUR HEART THAT KEEP BLOOD MOVING IN THE CORRECT DIRECTION.
WHEN THE PATIENT GETS OLDER THEY CAN BECOME DISEASED THEY CAN'T OPEN OR CLOSE PROPERLY.
AND IT CAN BE LIFE THREATENING.
>> Ted: SOMETHING CALLED MACK WHICH INVOLVES CALCIUM AROUND THE VALVES.
>> MAC STANDS FOR MITRAL CALCIFICATION.
THERE'S SOMETHING GOING ON IN THE BODY AND SUCH THAT THE MITRAL VALVES IN THE HEART CANNOT OPEN PROPERLY BECAUSE IT BECOMES CALCIFIED.
>> Ted: IT'S DIFFICULT.
THE CALCIUM, THE CALCIFICATION, DOES IT MAKE IT DIFFICULT TO DO SURGERY?
>> IT DOES, IT DOES.
THE CALCIFICATION BECOMES NO SEVERE WHEN THE SURGEON TRIES A TRADITIONAL APPROACH, WHEN THEY TRY TO CUT OR SEW OR GO INTO IT, IT CAN TEAR AND LEAD TO A PATIENT'S DEMISE.
>> Ted: THIS IS WHERE YOU COME IN, AND A DEVICE CALLED TENDINE.
WHAT IS THAT.
>> IT'S ONE OF THE FIRST CATHETER TECHNOLOGIES, INSERTED GOING THROUGH THE RIB SPACES ON THE LEFT SIDE OF THE CHEST.
THE SURGEON MAKES A SMALL INCISION ABOUT THE SIZE OF THUMB.
WITH THAT THEY THEN PASS THE VALVE INTO THE HEART.
THE HEART NEVER STOPS.
THERE'S NO HEART-LUNG MACHINE OR ANYTHING THAT CAUSES A STANDSTILL AND WHEN THAT VALVE IS PUT INTO PLACE THE SURGEON DOESN'T REALLY HAVE TO INTERACT WITH THE CALCIFICATION TO A SIGNIFICANT DEGREE AND THE WHOLE VALVE IS REPLACED.
>> IF THE VALVE IS REPLACED, DOES THE OLD VALVE STAY IN THERE?
DOES THIS COVER THAT?
HOW DOES THAT WORK?
>> THE OLD VALVE WHICH IS CALC CALCIFIED.
IT HAS A NEW VALVE ALMOST LIKE A RUSSIAN DOLL, ONE GOES INSIDE OF THE OTHER.
>> Ted: HOW INTERESTING.
AGAIN, THIS GOES THROUGH THE RIBS, THE SIZE OF THE THUMB INCISION AS OPPOSED TO CRACKING OPEN THE ENTIRE CHEST.
>> CORRECT, CORRECT.
SURGEONS DON'T LIKE TO CALL IT CRACKING OPEN.
THEY LIKE TO CALL IT A NICE STITCH AND SEW, BUT IT DOESN'T INVOLVE A STERNOTOMY.
>> Ted: HOW DOES IT MAKE IT IN TERMS OF THE SAFETY OF THE SURGERY?
>> WE FOUND THAT THE SAFETY IS EXCELLENT.
ALMOST ALL OF THE PATIENTS DID PERFECTLY WELL.
VERY VIEW ADVERSE EVENTS AND THE PATIENTS WHO WENT THROUGH THE PROCEDURES HAD QUALITY OF LIFE THAT LASTED THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE STUDY PERIOD.
>> Ted: HOW LONG OF A PROCEDURE?
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?
>> THE NICE THING, IT TAKES ABOUT AN HOUR AND THE PATIENTS ARE IN THE HOSPITAL FIVE OR SIX DAYS AND GO HOME AFTER THAT.
>> Ted: RECOVERY TO BE DIFFERENT THAN WHAT YOU CALL IT, THE OPEN-- >> SOME PEOPLE CALL IT A ZIPPER OR A, YOU KNOW, A CHAIN SAW, BUT IT'S REALLY NOT THAT.
IT'S A STERNOTOMY IS AN INCISION THAT'S SAFE AND BEEN AROUND FOR DECADES.
RECOVERY THIS WHAT WE CALL A LEFT THORCOTOMY.
THE FIRST TECHNOLOGY FOR PATIENTS WITH SEVERE MAC BECAUSE THESE PATIENTS TRADITIONALLY DON'T HAVE GOOD OPTIONS FOR SURGERY OR AN OPTION FOR TRANS CATHETER THERAPY.
>> Ted: THESE PATIENTS ARE ELDERLY OR-- >> YES, IT'S A DISEASE OF ELDERLY.
TYPICALLY THIS AFFECTS PATIENTS AROUND AGE 80.
>> Ted: IT COMES ON SLOWLY AND MONITORED BY THE DOCTORS?
>> CORRECT.
IT'S EASILY DETECTIBLE IN THE OFFICE WITH TRADITIONAL IMAGING OR ULTRASOUND OF THE HEART OR CT SCAN TO MAKE THE DIAGNOSIS.
>> Ted: CLINICAL STUDIES LIKE I'VE READ HERE LIKE NINE OUT OF 10 PEOPLE SHOWED SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN QUALITY OF LIFE?
>> THAT'S RIGHT, THAT'S RIGHT.
SO THE IMPACT IS VERY SIGNIFICANT AND TRADITIONALLY WHAT WE SAY IS MOST THE TIME PATIENTS CAN DETECT SMALL DIFFERENCES AND HERE IS THE ORDER OF MAGNITUDE WITH SEVERAL FOLD WITH WHAT THEY CAN DETECT.
>> Ted: F.D.A.
APPROVED WHEN?
WHEN DID THAT HAPPEN?
>> THIS SUMMER.
>> Ted: THAT MEANS THIS IS AVAILABLE FOR WHOEVER WANTS TO BUY IT, RIGHT?
IS THAT HOW THAT WORKS?
>> REQUIRES A SPECIAL TEAM AND PARTICULAR TRAINING, SO INITIALLY, THIS TECHNOLOGY, SIMILAR TO SOME OTHER TECHNOLOGIES, THAT'S GOING TO START OUT AS SPECIALIZED CENTERS, ABOUT 60 OR 65 IN THE U.S., HERE IN ARIZONA, BANNER WILL BE ONE OF THEM, VERY IMPORTANTLY, AND ONCE THAT STARTS GOING, WE WOULD EXPECT IT TO SPREAD A LITTLE BIT FURTHER.
>> Ted: CAN YOU USE THIS KIND OF TECHNOLOGY ON OTHER CONDITIONS?
>> SO, THERE ARE SIMILAR VALVES THAT ARE DEPLOYED THIS WAY, BUT THIS TECHNOLOGY IS VERY SPECIFIC FOR PATIENTS WITH MAC.
>> Ted: INTERESTING.
SO, THE IDEA OF GOING THROUGH THE RIBS, WE'LL KEEP IT TO THAT FOR NOW.
>> THAT'S RIGHT.
>> Ted: VERY GOOD.
CONGRATULATIONS ON THIS.
>> THANK YOU.
>> Ted: IT MUST FEEL GREAT THAT IT'S WORKING AND YOU'RE GETTING THIS DONE.
