Detective Bonz hatches a plan to catch the thief, and the children participate in the SC game show.
The SC Game Show is being broadcast from SC ETV television studios and all of Detective Bonz's assistants are contestants because they scored so well on their state social studies tests. Detective Bonz is concerned because he has not found the thief, but he hatches a plan involving the use of a history book borrowed from another school for bait and Kevin's lucky spool of fishing line.

♪ <Ms.
Marie> Please come in.
Sherlock Bonz is in his office.
He's expecting you.
♪ ♪ <Det.
Bonz> Good morning...
I'm in a bit of a hurry.
Did you hear?
The district is going to have... a South Carolina history game show, televised at SCETV!
And, not surprising at all, Kevin, Jeremy, Briana, and Amy have all been invited to compete.
They scored highest in their school.
I had a few minutes to look over the clues again this morning... the sunscreen, the price tag for the new shovel, the gum wrapper, food wrap.
♪ Such a strange collection of clues.
And my suspects-- Gaston, Tidwell, Ms. Franklin-- all seemingly nice people doing their job at a fine school.
I don't know what to make of it.
[cat meowing] Beastly feline, don't you know this is a no-cat zone?
Can't you read the sign?
[sighing] I mean, did you ever?
I'm sorry...I'm in a hurry to get to the school.
I'll see you there.
[cat meowing] [dog barking] ♪ Hmm...SPF-15.
♪ And a very familiar smell.
♪ Oh, Mr. Bonz.
<Ms.
Holman> Detective Bonz, these are the contestants from Riverside Elementary.
<Det.
Bonz> So, you are the lucky ones, getting to use this fine South Carolina history book to study for the contest?
You probably heard... the ones in this school were stolen!
<boy> Yeah... tough break.
<Det.
Bonz> And you're taking these to the TV studio?
>> Yep, but we don't have enough to share.
[sarcastically] Sorry!
<Briana> Wish us luck, Detective Bonz.
>> You'll need it... you haven't had history books.
We'll study right until the show.
>> Good luck.
You're going to be smashing.
I'll be there, watching.
♪ [ominous music] <Jing> Is too.
<Amy> Is not.
<Jing> Is too.
<Amy> Is not.
<Jing> Is too.
<Amy> Is not.
<Jing> Is too.
<Amy> Is not.
<Jing> Is too.
<Amy> Is not.
<Mr.
Gaston> What is too, and is not?
<Jing> We're arguing about why it's dark when we time travel.
We see places, but when we talk to people, it's dark around us.
<Briana> Not to mention it changed our clothes.
<Mr.
Gaston> Well, as a science teacher, I must approach this in a scientific manner...hmm.
I think that when we time travel-- [whispering] when we time travel, we enter into some time-travel void, like a black hole, that brings people from the other time into that void, where we meet them.
<Jing> That makes sense.
<Amy> A black hole is where two time periods intersect, right?
<Mr.
Gaston> That's my scientific conclusion.
and my other conclusion is It's time to leave for the TV contest.
<Det.
Bonz> I found out that ETV stands for South Carolina Educational TV, and their studio is magnificent, It's one of the largest ETV stations in the country and winner of many national awards.
Quite an exciting place to be!
<Mr Gaston> Don't forget the six regions.
You guys are going to do great.
<Jing> Good luck, you guys!
[whispering] <Det.
Bonz> Kevin, I see you brought your lucky fishing line.
Mind if I borrow a few yards?
<Kevin> No.
<Det.
Bonz> I'm in the mood to go...fishing.
I need to set my bait.
The district office is lending it to me.
♪ <Amy> What did he want?
<Kevin> Fishing line.
<Amy> For what?
<Kevin> I don't know.
<TV director> Kids, it's time to get on the set.
♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ Stand by.
♪ <announcer> And now, live from South Carolina ETV... it's "South Carolina Trivia Showcase"!
Here's your host... Alan Paige!
>> Thank you.
Today the schools competing will be Sandlapper Elementary and Riverside Elementary.
The students here scored highest on the district South Carolina history test.
They're going to tell us about themselves.
and then we'll begin the game.
Let's start with Sandlapper.
>> Hi, I'm Kevin Williams.
I draw, play soccer...
I love to go fishing.
I don't want to admit this, but I really like history.
>> Hi, I'm Jeremy Lamotte.
I love computers.
I play the recorder.
Also, I like cooking.
>> Hi, I'm Briana Johnson.
I like school and reading.
We're ready to win!
>> Hi, I'm Amy Fernandez.
I enjoy science, and collecting seashells, and I'm into drama.
<Alan> These kids did some amazing things.
The South Carolina history books at their school have been stolen.
They've researched South Carolina History by themselves and shared with classmates.
Give them a round of applause.
[applause] Thank you, Sandlapper.
Let's meet the students from Riverside.
>> My name is Ricky Quieras.
I love baseball.
Someday I want to design cars in the BMW factory in Greer.
They're one of the oldest and finest car companies.
They moved to South Carolina a few years ago.
I'm feeling excited... Oh and hey, Mom.
I'm Suzy Won Lim.
I like to roller blade and I'm interested in animals.
When I grow up, I want to work at Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia, it's one of the top ten zoos in the United States.
I'm Lauren O'Dell.
I'm working on my yellow belt in karate.
My family loves to camp and hike.
I've hiked every trail at Table Rock and Caesars Head.
Also, I'm a cheerleader.
Go, Riverside Elementary!
>> Hi, I'm Tyrell Blake.
Football is one of my hobbies.
SC State University in Orangeburg is my favorite team... go, Bulldogs!
My favorite subject is math, and I like to play basketball.
<Alan> Thank you, Riverside.
First, how to play the game.
Each team will have four contestants answer questions in the first few rounds.
Then we will play the Lightning Round.
I will reach into the palmetto tree to choose categories and questions.
Whichever team dings first has the chance to answer.
If they get it right, they receive 5 points.
If they miss, their opponents have a chance.
Whoever has the most points at the end of the game will receive a fabulous prize.
Okay contestants, l et's start the game.
Our first category is... South Carolina's three largest rivers are the Santee, Savannah, and what?
[buzzer buzzing] Riverside, Suzy!
The Pee Dee River.
<Alan> Correct for Riverside.
Again, Nature Facts.
<actor #1> I'm an oak tree near Charleston.
I'm huge and nearly 1,000 years old.
What's my name?
[buzzer buzzing] Sandlapper, Amy.
<Amy> Angel Oak.
<Alan> Amy answered correctly.
Let's change categories now to...
The state bird of South Carolina is...?
[buzzer buzzing] Sandlapper, Jeremy.
<Jeremy> Carolina wren.
<Alan> Five more points for Sandlapper.
<actor #2> This is our state flower.
What is it called.
[two buzzers buzzing] <Alan> Tyrell rang first.
<Jeremy> Rats!
>> Your answer?
<Tyrell> The Carolina Jessamine?
>> That's correct.
Now, we have a tie.
<Ricky> Not for long.
<Jeremy> That's true.
We'll be winning shortly.
[laughing] >> Woof, woof, woof!
<Alan> What is South Carolina's state tree?
It helped us defeat the British at Fort Moultrie.
[buzzer buzzing] Sandlapper, Jeremy.
>> The Palmetto tree.
<Alan> Sandlapper, another five points.
[applause] <Jeremy> Nana-nana-nana!

Let's try the category... <actor #3> In 1957, I was the first African American woman to have won the Wimbledon tournament and the national women's championship in tennis.
I grew up in Silver, South Carolina.

<Briana> You're Althea Gibson.

<actor #4> I'm from Beaufort, South Carolina...
I was the heavyweight champion of the world, 1970 to 1973.

[laughter] <actor #5> I led the American League in home runs three times.

<actor #6> I was a very successful football player, for the National Football League.
In 1989, I became the first African American to ever coach an NFL team, the Oakland Raiders.

<Alan> It's good for you he does, because you answered correctly.

<actor #7> South Carolina is home to the world's largest basic training base.

[buzzer buzzing] Sandlapper, Amy.
<Amy> That's where cannonballs hit during the Civil War.
<Alan> Amy answered correctly.
During the Civil War, which side wore the blue uniforms?
Union or Confederate?
Riverside, Ricky.
<Ricky> Union Army.
<Alan> Ricky is right.

<actor #8> This dance craze started in Charleston, South Carolina right after World War I.
People all over the country loved it.

<actor #9> There is a tribe of Native Americans living in a large community near Rock Hill, South Carolina.
They used to live along the Catawba River.
Their name means "River People."

He gave his life in the Challenger space mission.

<actor #11> I was t he daughter of a former slave from Mayesville, I founded one of the first African-American colleges for females.
Later, I served at the United Nations.
<Lauren> Mary McLeod Bethune... you were awesome, for helping black women go to college back in the old days.

I'm Amelia Bedelia from the popular Amelia Bedelia books.
The lady who wrote these books grew up in Manning.
She was a schoolteacher and author for many years.
and sold millions of books.

[cheering] Congratulations, everyone, for a great game, and kids who are watching... keep learning that South Carolina history.
<TV director> That's a wrap, everybody.
[cheering] Wait... everyone stop!
I have found the thief.
♪ Come in and face the music, as we detectives say.
Your book thief is... Mr. Norman Tidwell... [audience gasping] your retired neighbor and volunteer gardener.
<Ms.
Holman> Mr. Tidwell... you, of all people.
Why would you do such a thing?
<Mr.
Tidwell> Well, you see, a short time back, I saw programs on cable TV about history, which is something I didn't study much when I was in school.
What I saw on TV was, people have acted in bad ways towards each other in the past.
I didn't want boys and girls to learn those things.
>> If we learn from our mistakes by studying history, then we can maybe not make mistakes again.
Another thing, if we learn the good things we've done, we can take pride in our accomplishments.
<Mr.
Tidwell> I...never thought about it that way.
That does make sense.
I'm sorry about how I went about things.
I can get the books back by tomorrow morning.
I hope you can forgive me.
<Ms.
Holman> Mr. Tidwell, you did go about things the wrong way.
Stealing is never a solution to any problem, but I see you are truly sorry and you've learned a lesson from this.
>> I'd still like to keep tending the front flower garden, if you'd still give me another chance.
<Ms.
Holman> Why, of course.
You do such a fine job out there.
[footfalls] <Lauren> You all did a great job even without books to study.
It was almost like you lived it, like were there.
<Amy> Thanks.
Your school did great, too.
Those were some tough questions.
<Sherlock Bonz> Well, we did it!
<Kevin> Mr. Bonz, how did you catch him?
>> Well, detectives must be always looking and noticing things.
I'd found the gum wrapper, you remember, and sunscreen in the picnic area along with wheelbarrow tracks.
<Briana> Yes, and...?
<Det.
Bonz> Since finding those clues recently, nothing much had developed.
So, I decided to drop some bait.
I got another history book from the district office and set it outside the door during the show.
<Jeremy> You tied on the fishing line-- <Det.
Bonz> Precisely...I waited, then I felt a tug.
When I went into the hallway, there was Mr. Tidwell, sneaking away with the book, and my stunningly trained sniffer... [sniffing] noticed the same smell of sunscreen, and he was chewing gum.
When I presented him with the information, he had no choice but to confess.
<Kevin> Did he tell where the books are?
<Det.
Bonz> Indeed!
They're buried in a big hole on the edge of the playground, wrapped in plastic food wrap, in good condition, he said.
*>> Mr. Bonz, we don't know how to thank you.
This is such a relief to have this crime solved.
<Ms.
Holman> Absolutely...our school can't thank you enough.
I'm very proud of you kids for helping the whole school get excited about their South Carolina history.
<Det.
Bonz> They are the very best assistants I have every worked with.
Oh yes, there's Jing, another great helper.
<Kevin> Cracking good, in fact.
<Mr.
Gaston> Boy, I'm glad I'm not a suspect anymore.
I'm satisfied to be a plain science teacher.
<Sherlock Bonz> Sorry, Mr. Gaston... a detective never knows until the crime is solved.
You've been very helpful, though.

[cat meowing] <Jing> Wait a minute!
Did I hear a cat?
♪ >> I'll see.
[cat meowing] >> Yes, this was the first case I ever worked in a school, and believe me, it was cracking good.
[sighing] Maybe now, I'll have a little time for relaxation.

♪ [munching sounds] Mmm.
