The Blue Bird Inn, historic jazz club on Detroit’s west side, is set for a grand revival.
A historic jazz club in Detroit is getting a massive renovation, thanks to the nonprofit Detroit Sound Conservancy. Contributor Cecelia Sharpe of 90.9 WRCJ was on hand for the groundbreaking celebration for the long-abandoned Blue Bird Inn on the city's west side. Plus, she hears from members of the community on what the rehab of the club will mean for the surrounding neighborhood.

we celebrate an advocate for detroit music and our incredible history.
and when we say we are actually the choice now conservancy, i mean, all of you, you are all part of the conservancy because there's nothing but community putting his minds together to solve a problem.
>> what has been the process of acquiring the bluebird and and and just beginning the process of restoring the venue, we were able to purchase them over.
and at that point, we had just we just fundraise to make sure it wasn't demolished on the demolition list.
and then we got his story as a nation for it.
so it could never be torn down in case our money payments lower than it was supposed to.
and now we are rejoicing and we're so happy that we have enough that it's opening in two thousand.
twenty-four.
>> you're familiar with the bluebird in history of it.
what does it mean to you to have this renovation of the blue bird inn right here in your community?
it means a lot because people are moving back into the neighborhood and that's a good a good, a good starting point to you know, we do make the area and maybe start of another business is right around the area that have been closed and moved out.
i'm smelling the ribs chicken.
what we've got some good stuff go.
absolutely.
you're here to feed the people, the volunteers and everyone that's here to celebrate the event.
we have a meals program that that we do it right.
sock conservatives been a partner for about six years and so on.
my first barbecue here was in two thousand, eighteen for motor city makeover.
we clean the building.
and so we've established a pretty good report and a great partnership says.
>> when are you looking forward to most about the bluebird in many in the next eighteen months?
>> i think just having somewhere else to be able to go to for live music going to hang out about, i mean, where he wrote, i and not too far from old town, not too far from submerged and everything else is going on here on the boulevards right thing to be in his neighborhood have another spot in the neighborhood that people are so familiar with that.
just an amazing things.
i can wait a little bit.
>> what does this day mean to you here at the blue bird inn?
this this day is is really a combination of them.
just many years of love for this for this particular place.
i remember the first time i came here, i actually snuck out with a girlfriend of mine when i was about fifteen who are actually too young to drive.
but we strive any way you want to.
i got so when i went to bed, lynne upper house and she said we've got snow.
that's not where to gaza.
let's go to the jazz club owner.
you're probably over over time.
i had a chance actually working here with a day to be out there in the nineties and then just to be able to have i have my youngest son be at two am and be here for one another.
only this place.
it's just everything comes full circle.
>> knowing that you'll be able to play in the same place that your mom pop to first and then was able to come back and play and perform as a base is how does that feel?
>> it feels is really indescribable.
really?
when you think about it, you know, knowing sauce as well as my mother.
so many of my mentors have graced this stage as well.
the royal brothers, george davison been my hero, elvin jones, you know, being a part of being a part of this groundbreaking is immaculate somewhere >> as the detroit music community, every you as a musician.
>> i think there's this spirit mentor ship that isn't talked about enough there.
so many people that care about the trades history and legacy, you have to bring up that next generation to be able to show the importance of where these came from so that they understand where music is going.
>> and the next generation of jazz and continuing to care.
and that's sort of what would you like to impart on the future of that?
>> a way of sort of has a quote that really stuck with me.
and when someone asked him, what do you what do you think that as it is?
and he said, oh, jazz is like a bumblebee and holidays every other form of music and tells them to stay creative as they press never stagnant.
>> i migrated home.
>> i'm happy to trade zone is dedicated to learning education because that piece of music is the part that translates to multiple generations.
