Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipFun fac The Apostle Islands is actually the largest concentration of lighthouses in the United States, with there being eight lighthouses spread out amongst the 22 Apostle Islands, with the Devil's Island Lighthouse being the eighth and final one to be constructed.
The contract for it was established in 1891, but it was not finished being built until 1897.
So until then there wa a temporary wooden lighthouse.
You know, the light on top.
But actually, even then, it wasn't lit yet.
It got lit in 1901 when they finally got their third ordered, ferno lens from Paris, which, you know, they shippe over in a big thing of butter.
I'll protect it from, you know, vibrations, cracks, all that fun stuff.
If you guys saw that, like, metal exoskeleton run down the outside.
They added that in 1914 because the lighthouse would vibrate so much and not only created annoying noise, but it also woul sometimes extinguish the flame.
So not very safe for, you know, boats going.
And also probably annoying for the keepers to have to go back up and relight it every time it went out.
