When a player blows air through this wooden instrument, it makes a low hum.

Well, we hear it's a very old instrument.

That's right, my grandfather and I made this one out of a hollowed out tree trunk.

Well, termites hollowed it out.

But making these beauts is part of my culture.

Each instrument is very personal, one-of-a-kind.

Why is that?

Well, we do our part.

Ya see, a didgeridoo is a very special instrument, and not just anybody can make one.

It starts with a nice Australian eucalyptus tree, and we termites hollow out the tree by eating the inside.

Ya clean all the gunk out with a stick, and the bark is stripped away.

Some friendly stingless bees provide a special wax for a mouth piece.

And then it's painted with natural paints from the earth.

A proper didgeridoo is made mostly by nature, mates, and no two are alike.

That's part of what makes 'em so special.

(loud rumbling) That's amazing, David.

So we need a new one, and fast.

Eh, not a problem there, mates.

We can get my whole family to help out.

(funky quartet music) ♪ Hi, this is Carmen with an Australian folktale called How the Kangaroo Got Her Pouch.

(gentle music) Long ago, a mama kangaroo noticed her baby Joey had wandered off, just as a storm was coming up.

Searching for her young one, she met an old wombat.

"Who's there?"

asked the wombat, and Mama Kangaroo realized the wombat couldn't see.

"Hello, friend," she said.

"Come with me while I find my Joey."

They found her Joey, and all took shelter in a cave.

(lightning rumbling) When the storm passed, Mama and Joey realized the wombat was gone.

It turned out the wombat was really a sky spirit looking for the creature with the kindest heart.

He saw now it was Kangaroo.

He called the other sky spirits and said, "Let's make a dilly-bag apron of eucalyptus bark "for Mama Kangaroo to tie around her waist."

The moment she tied the apron on, it transformed into soft kangaroo fur, a pouch to carry and protect her baby Joey.

Mama Kangaroo wished others could have such a pouch, and the sky spirits granted her wish.

Now, most marsupial mothers have pouches, and their babies never get lost.

Every country has towns and cities.

Today, we are in the big city of Sydney.

But outside of the city, there's an even bigger area where hardly anyone lives.

Australians call this area The Bush.

It's a great place to raise cows.

In fact, that's one of the things Leo's uncle does.

I thought we were going to your uncle's ranch.

In Australia, we don't say ranch.

We say cattle station.

It's basically a ranch where you raise cows.

So Australian cowboys are called stockmen, and they work on a cattle station?

Yup, but don't worry, Andy, Australian stockmen are just like the cowboys in America.

They still wear big hats, herd cattle, ride horses.

Is something wrong, Leo?

You were talking about riding horses and then you got all jittery.

I love my uncle, and I love visiting his station.

Trying new things can feel scary and embarrassing, and it's okay to feel scared.

But for me, learning more about something helps get rid of my fear.
