Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipDisability Advocates are also flexing their might rallying today in Trenton to remind legislators and the public that the power of the disability vote exists keeps growing and can influence the outcome of November's election Ted Goldberg reports Disability Advocates came to the Capitol today to encourage people to vote and show lawmakers a united front for their concerns I think it's really important for our community especially within the disability Community to encourage others to get out and vote and also for legislators to understand and become aware of our issues as a person with a disability I fought my whole life and especially being disabled and trying to advocate for my life in today's world society people with disabilities rights are typically not thought of Nabil gandham works for the alliance Center for Independence we try our best to help people with disabilities understand what voting is how important voting is you know to create disability advocacy and legislation and disability rights as a civil right he helped people register to vote before and after these speeches Advocates say voting is one of the best ways for the disabled Community to get their points across and influence elections people with disabilities are significant and Powerful voting block with the power to influence policy let's work together to get out the disability vote and make our voices heard we need to have ourselves step up to the plate be prepared as a go-getter to Canvas Empower encourage dramatically impact dramatically Inspire it's estimated that more than one million new jerseyans have at least one disability that is nearly 20 percent of our state's population now take a moment to imagine the power of such a large community coming together to vote within the last couple years we've had a seven percent increase um in in voting of those with disabilities so it's really important because that's how um most of the time we get our issues addressed those issues are as diverse as the people within the disabled Community they include problems with Access Link and NJ Transit and finding suitable job training if we really want to call ourselves a employment first thing and be Progressive then we need to promote and Implement policies that will do that to help people while maintaining their benefits we have the power to change the outcome of the things we want the things we need every time we go to The Ballot Box and if people don't vote you can't complain if you don't vote right can't complain I don't want I don't want to hear it this event is part of disability voting rights week these Advocates have until October 17th to get people to register so expect a busy few weeks of getting people signed up Statewide in Trenton I'm Ted Goldberg NJ Spotlight News [Music]
