Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorship(upbeat electronic music) (eerie electronic music) (bright saxophone music) (upbeat rock music) - Sylvie and I met in so-called Australia and I had a housemate named Jonah and then Jonah moved out of my house into Sylvie's house, and then Jonah was like, "Hey, you two need to meet each other."
And we did.
Jonah said we would really get along, and we do.
And we just started playing music and just kind of like tumbled from there.
It's a very, very chill story.
Not one of those like, "Oh my gosh!"
But we kind of like just get along.
Now that I'm reflecting, I think being in a band with someone is like being around someone you don't mind being around for a lot of time.
And that's maybe it.
It's not even about your musical connection, which I believe Sylvie and I do have that, but we just can relax around each other.
I would say we're both very relaxed people, so it came together organically.
Both Sylvie and I are Indigenous.
I'm Black and Cherokee, Sylvie is Maori and we definitely, like, have our ancestors in mind and the land and the water and just like being in connection with the earth and its vibrations and its frequencies, that's definitely something that is in the forefront of our experience and our musical making process.
So we're just trying to like establish connectivity, I guess.
(upbeat rock music) (audience clapping) (bright saxophone music) (upbeat rock music) Yeah, I'm a classically trained saxophonist and my dad started teaching me how to play music.
It's like definitely some of my first memories.
He said to me, "If you can play piano, you can play anything."
So, that's my first instrument.
I am not a good piano player at all, but I think he was right because if I pick up an instrument, I can at least get something out of there.
I love playing music.
I will play anything that someone gives me, and I might not do it well, but it's happening.
I vibe with music.
I started playing guitar kind of recently.
It's not a very old instrument to me, but saxophone is something that I am with, that I feel this like other connection with.
And guitar is something I feel connected to as well and I think it's because that's like polyphonic nature.
That is something that I deeply resonate with and I'm very happy I play guitar, even though I don't feel like I excel at it.
It's something that I feel connected to in a different way.
Saxophone, if I want to play something, I can just play it instantly.
Guitar, I have to like really work at it.
And I think it's probably because I just haven't spent as much time with the instrument, but they're very beautiful instruments.
I just love music.
Thanks y'all for being here and we're really stoked.
