Meet Ireland's pioneers of surf - from Kevin Cavey and Harry & Vivienne Evans to Davy Govan and the Britton brothers. The Dublin and Belfast crews shared a love of surfing but disagreed when it came to nurturing the sport: the Dubliners wanted to make it mainstream but for the surfers of Belfast, it was a lifestyle counter to Northern Irish society.

There was the very, you know- I would call 'em the guys in the blue blazers who were like, "We're gonna make surfing part of mainstream," and we're gonna have contests, and we're all gonna show up in ties, and wave to the media and all that.
And that was good.
But then there was the other crew who sort of represented the renegade element that surfing was about as well.
And those were more like the guys from the North, Alan and Davy and Martin Lloyd and a few others who kind of represented a counterculture, in a good way.
But it was definitely counterculture.
(bright Irish music) They were doing something that was unique, and they knew it was unique.
