Thank you.
Please be seated.
Good afternoon.
And on behalf of Michigan State University.
Welcome to the spring 2026 doctoral degree commencement ceremony.
For those joining us on live stream.
We offer you greetings as well.
Today, we recognize the dedication, scholarship, and leadership of our doctoral degree candidates and celebrat their incredible achievements.
Graduates, I've greatly enjoyed the opportunities that we've had to meet each other and get to know one another.
It's clear to me that you are passionate and dedicated scholars who are ready to assume the role of leaders.
You've added the diversity of your unique backgrounds to the university's educational community and to your scholarship.
You range in age from 25 to 65 and represent 39 states and 35 countries.
Five of you are veterans who have served our country in the military.
And thank you for your service.
And many more of you have represented Michigan State University in your scholarly pursuits at conferences and other gatherings.
Maybe most importantly, though, all of you are Spartans for life.
So, family and friends, let's all celebrate our graduates with our applause as we kick off today's ceremony.
Like today's featured speaker, who you will meet shortly, our doctoral degree candidates have rendered great service to the university its students, and our faculty.
I've been privileged to wor with and mentor many outstanding graduate students, and I can attest to their importance to my own personal success and to that of this great university's success.
Graduates, you step beyond your roles of students to assume leadership in our classrooms, laboratories, and in the spheres of your academic disciplines.
You supported our research enterprise and faculty mentors by applying your perspectives to uncover, to analyze, and present new information and is one of the world's great research and land grant universities.
It's in Michigan State's DNA to marshal cutting edge knowledge and innovation to address society's greatest challenges.
Thank you for your partnershi in fulfilling this passionately public university's commitment to creating knowledge and transforming lives.
And as emerging knowledge leaders, you are the next generatio or next generation of thinkers and doers fit to grapple with society's many issues.
We count on you to not only contribute to solving the grand challenge of today, but also to identify and develop ways to solve the grand challenges of tomorrow.
As you move forward, I hope you remember that the civil discourse that I've emphasized to our campus community over the past two years is more than an expectation for how we interact with one another across our diversity and differences.
Civil discourse also underpins the academic freedom we've all been privileged to exercise the freedom to inquire, to test ideas to challenge assumptions depends on our ability and willingness to engage with one another with respect and humility.
In this way, we create spaces where knowledge and understanding can grow.
That is something this world needs, perhaps more now than ever.
And I hope you carry this understanding with you wherever your personal paths take you.
Your doctoral degrees will serve you well as you pursue your careers whether in academia, industry, government, or other organizations.
So now we ask our guests to join students and faculty in singing one stanza of the Star Spangled Banner, performed by the MSU Wind Symphony under the direction of Doctor Kevin Setter Toll, professor and director of Bands in the College of Music.
The singing will be led by Ameera Coleman, a doctoral student in music performance.
Pleas rise as you were able and upon conclusion of the singing, please remain standing for a moment of silence.
(Singing and performance of Star-Spangled Banner) Thank you.
Ameera.
And as you remain standing I ask provost and executive vice president for academic Affairs, Doctor Laura Lee McIntyre, to please join me at the lectern.
On this joyful occasion let us also briefly acknowledge the fellow students you have lost along your journey to reach this moment.
Those scholars are forever part of our Spartan family.
So let us pause here for a moment of silence and remembrance.
Thank you.
Please be seated.
I now have the honor to present Doctor Ann Austin as today's keynote speaker.

Please welcome along side me, Doctor Ann Austin.
Congratulations.
Thank you so very much for that introduction.
President Guskiewicz, members of the Board of Trustees.
Thank you.
Members of the platform party.
Faculty and staff, colleagues.
Distinguished guests, family members and friends of the graduates and most importantly, members of the doctoral graduating class of 2026.
I am very honored and please to be able to address you today.
I'd like to begin today with the most important part of the day, and that is celebrating each of you who has earned the distinction of being awarded a doctorate.
You have spent many years preparing for today, including your dedication as undergraduates and the many years and graduates school you spent deepenin your knowledge, becoming experts in your particular fields, and pursuing a problem, a question, or a creative direction in which you've invested much effort to complete a dissertation.
Long ago, when I was working on my dissertation, my mom, who is a wonderful supporter and one with whom I was very close she often asked me, how is that big paper coming along?
And she sometimes observes that she thought it seemed to be taking me a long time to get that big paper done.
And was I working hard enough?
And I imagine it has taken you some substantial time to get your big paper done to.
And I realized then that even when family and friends are deeply supportive, they may not fully understand the depth of commitment.
The time, or the energy required to complete a doctorate.
You have each demonstrated such persistence, hard work, and dedication, and you're contributing to the world by advancing knowledge and creative expression.
This is a day of great celebration and applause for your accomplishments.
But I also want to note that your class has had some unique challenges to navigate.
You pursued your college or your early graduate work during the pandemic period, when the usual structures o support and personal interaction were constrained, and you and your loved ones may have been managing some very difficult times.
You also were part of the Michigan State community during a time when we experienced the deep grie of terrible violence and loss.
Your years of study have also been marked by societal polarization and very difficult events across the world.
I know these experiences an events have affected all of you, but even as you've navigated through personal, community and societal challenges, each of you has been dedicated, resilient, and focused, and you've each reached thi culminating day of celebration.
We applaud who you are, what you've already accomplished, and the contributions you're ready to make.
We are extremely proud of you our newest Spartan doctorates.
And before I continue, I'd like to invite everyone to join me in applause for two thing for our distinguished graduates, but also for their wonderfully supportive family and friends.
Thank you so much.
To be invited to speak to you, our honored graduates, along with your guests and my respected colleagues, is a very special privilege.
I have loved my work her at Michigan State for 35 years as a teacher, researcher, and serving in various leadership roles.
I've especially enjoyed my research on improving teaching and learning, studying the doctoral experience in the academic career, and advancing knowledg about how organizational change occurs in higher education, collaborating closely wit faculty and student colleagues in class and research, and in various international project has been especially meaningful.
The thoughts I want to share today are deeply rooted in my experience acros many years as a faculty member, teacher, researcher, and learner and leader.
In 1998, shortly after the end of apartheid.
My family and I had a U.S.
Fulbright Fellowship to live and work in South Africa.
My work was to support faculty who were developing new approaches to teaching and learning that supported the full range of learners in the changing South African context.
Our family found that yea to be one of the most meaningful in our lives, and the experience has shaped my work in profound ways.
Since then, I have taken a number of groups of graduate students and faculty who study higher education to engage in collaborative work in South Africa.
So picture this I typically drive the students around in a van for both our professional obligations and our personal activities.
So one day I was dropping off a group of students at a local shopping area to get a few things I needed.
As we pulled up and they piled out without thinking, I said, make good choices.
And to explain that, I need to note that my life as a faculty member has occurred across the same years as my life as a mom.
So the phrase make good choices jumped out without my thinking.
Now, you can probably imagine how much fun the graduate students had with the professor, who drops them off with the admonition to make good choices.
And while we continue to laug about this over the coming days, we also began to talk more seriously about the idea of making good choices and how it applies to one's work and life.
And in fact, several of thos formal former doctoral students were at a reunion at my home a week ago, and they spent considerable time reflecting on how the idea of making good choices had continued to guide their thinking and actions, both professionally and personally, over the past decade since they graduated.
So making good choices is the theme I'd like to share with you today.
It's a thought that you might take with you.
Making good choices reminds me that while lives and careers have many unexpected twists and turns, as commencement speakers I know often say we each have agency in what we do and in the decisions we make in our lives and careers.
You are each graduating, each of our graduates here with great stories of knowledge, capability and preparation to address advance and challenging issues in your areas of expertise.
You will eac have innumerable opportunities to make decisions large and small, to guide others, and to use your intellect an well honed scholarly abilities.
But in using your agency to make a difference in the world, I want to urge you also to bring not only knowledge and disciplinary expertise to your work and lives.
I want to encourage yo to bring your full capacities.
That is, to think about what signature values and qualities will inform your work and your decisions as deeply as your intellect does.
Our values represent what we believe to be good and true as we live our values.
We express our vision and hopes for the world that we want.
I invite you to reflect today and in the days ahead on some related questions.
What are the deep values that guide and define who you are?
And there will guide you as you create distinguished careers.
What values and qualities, coupled with your scholarly abilities and skills will enable you to make good choices.
Good decisions and actions that will advance your hopes for our world.
Making good choices will require both knowledge and values.
As I think about the people that I've known who have had a great influence on me and the people I admire for making the worl better through the work they do.
In every case, there are people whose lives expres a deep sense of guiding values.
They do their work with skill and expertise as you will, but they also do it with clarity about the values, what some might call guidin ethics and qualities that shape the myriad choices that aris in their work, in their lives.
Every day.
Today, I invite you to consider what values are at the core of who you are.
That is the core values that will guide you as you make choices and move forward in your careers.
As you think about the core values or qualities you want to express, let me give you an example of someone whose life and hopes of the world have inspired me.
Someone who's deeply held values guided his decisions and actions.
Nelson Mandela, who received an honorary doctorate of law from Michigan State in 2008, wa the president of South Africa.
When my family and I lived there in the late 90s, Mandela often spoke of the importance of valuing respect and including all South Africans.
I remember well where I wa when I heard a radio broadcast that stopped me in my tracks and gave me a lasting example of what it means to be very clear about one step values, and to be guide in those values in one's work.
Leadership and decisions.
Mandela was attending a public event honoring someone who had passed away and had been an important forc in the anti-apartheid movement, the South African national anthem.
Some of you may know this, which was new at the time, includes verses in five of the multiple languages of South Africa.
English.
Khoza, Zulu, Susutu and Afrikaans.
And our family knew it well because our three kids learned it in school, so we would just sit.
Sometimes at the event, the choir sang the national anthem, but omitted the part in Afrikaans, I believe because the Afrikaans language was associated with the oppression of the apartheid period.
President Mandela interrupted the event and asked to have the national anthem sung again, this time with all the languages, including the Africans.
Verse.
I believe that his deep commitment to the values of unity and respect for all South Africans.
Guided his decision and action as a leader to call for the full set of languages to be sung.
His vision of a country united across difference to advanc all citizens was an invitation to everyone to rise higher in their humanity.
He wanted to remind everyone that the national anthem represented a country where all people are valued and respected.
His choice that day of how to enact leadership was a gift to his country, and I remember listening to this radio report and literally having tears come to my eyes with gratitude for leadership and decision making.
So guided by clear values, values of respect, inclusion and unity, which Mandela highlighted as a way to bring people together.
Each of us has occasions to make decisions, big or small, every day.
Opportunity to make good choices.
Those of us, so many in this room who have had the privilege of advanced education, have the responsibility to draw on our deep knowledge and expertis as we make the myriad decisions and choices confronting us in our work and careers.
But we need to be sure that our deep values play a role.
Also in my own life and work.
I've especially tried to emphasize to emphasize the values of kindness, service, and community in leadership roles and decision making.
And as a researcher and teacher, I've tried to remember that elevating kindness.
Seeing my work as service and advancing community.
Guide me and help me to make good choices.
As we gather today to celebrate your significant accomplishments, I know that you each have so much to bring to the world.
Your depth and breadth of knowledge, your powers of analysis, your specialized abilities and creativity.
But I also urge you to bring your core values into everything you d and every choice that you make.
Combining your scholarl strengths with your deep values enables you to live your life with hope and positive impact.
As we celebrate together today and as you embark on your careers in academe, business, industry, government, public service and many other areas, I hope you'll take time to reflect on the value and qualities that may be most meaningful to you, and perhaps identify a few to keep at the forefront of your thought.
There are many to consider.
Courage.
Fairness.
Curiosity.
Empathy.
Care.
Inequity.
Honesty.
Compassion and responsibility.
And others.
So I'm not making a reques for you to follow someone else's values.
It's a suggestion for you to think deeply about what values, what core qualities motivate you and constitute your own unique signature as you do your work.
Take on the leadership for which you've prepared, and make the choices and decisions that your education at MSU has so fully prepared you to do.
I think we all know that our world today is precarious in many ways.
The times ahead will not be easy.
You are researchers, teachers, and leaders who are deeply needed.
Thomas Merton, the renowned theologian and writer, said we must make choices that enable us to fulfill the deepest capacities of our real selves.
You will make many choices in your work and lives.
I hope you find ways to connect your deep values with your knowledge and scholarly abilities, to make your unique and very needed contributions to the world's great challenges.
Make good choices that express the deepest capacities of your real selves.
The world needs you to do so.
I know I join all my colleagues and your many family and friends to offer you the warmest congratulations.
We are so very proud of you and we send you forth with gratitude, hope and confidence and the very good choices you will make.
Congratulations and go green light.
Thank you, Doctor Austin, for those wonderful words of wisdom around core values, ethical decision making.
And, as I said earlier we are grateful that you are a proud Spartan.

The academic attire worn by students and faculty was first use in 12th and 13th century Europe.
The current system in the United States of America was designed in 1895, and is used today in advanced degre ceremonies across the country.
The hoods being placed unde doctoral candidates are derived from the design of medieval monks cloaks.
The three chevrons on the sleev represent Doctor of Philosophy.
The light blue velvet on the front signifies Doctor of Education, the pink velvet on the front signifies the Doctor of Musical Arts and the apricot velvet on the front signifie the Doctor of Nursing practice.
The green and white chevrons on each hood represent our beloved Michigan State University.
The gown, the cap, and especially the hood represent both the responsibility and the freedom that accompany the achievements in research and scholarship that these candidates have earned through years of hard work.
The ceremony of hoodin doctoral candidates symbolizes the faculty welcoming these students as our full fledged colleagues.

We are almost to the finish line, and I just want to thank all of you for staying.
I know it's a long ceremony but it's incredibly important.
So thanks to all of you.
So now, will all doctoral degree recipients please rise as you are able?
Congratulations, Spartans.
You're already getting jus an incredible round of applause.
And it's much deserved.
Graduates, there are many who celebrate with you.
People who have been with you throughout your academic journey who rooted for you and perhaps helped yo cross that finish line.
Today.
They might be parents, siblings, aunts and uncles, grandparents or friends.
So let's show our appreciation to all the family members and friends who have been so importan in your journey and who are here watching, the live strea or sharing the moment in person with all family and friends.
Please stand as you are able.
Please stand so we can recognize you.
There's another group richly deserving of our recognition, and that's our amazing world class faculty and dedicated staff who supported your success here at Michigan State University.
Can we show them our appreciation to.
For an educator, there are few joys greater than watching those you have taught and mentored.
Become the leaders of tomorrow.
We are grateful for all thos who made this moment possible, including generations of alums, donors, and citizens who have supported this great university for more than 170 years.
So member of the graduating class of 2026, this is my parting charge to you.
I urge you to continue your service to society by maintaining your curiosity and engaging with humility and civility.
And I hope you remain forever connected to this magical place as you join the ranks of half a million degreed Spartans making the world a better place.
As always, go green.
I now invite everyone to please rise and join in singing the first stanz of the alma mater, MSU shadows.
Miss Coleman will lead us in the singing.
Following the singing, we ask our guests to please remain seated unti the recessional of the platform.
Party faculty and students.
Thanks again.
