- Right?
- What else do you do?
What's your sort of main gig?
Parents, the whole mix because obviously this is a behavior that comes from a very loving and dedicated place, or you wouldn't do it.
- Yeah.
- I think that first of all, I'm a mother, I'm a school teacher and school counselor.
Still going on that, have been for decades.
That's very important for a million reasons.
I need to work out.
I need to keep my house in order.
There are so many priorities that I have in my life, right?
Just to keep things functioning and the important things in my life.
And through all of that, I have still managed to keep music in my life in various ways.
Through all of that, I think it can be challenging for, I'll sound gender specific for a minute.
I think it can be challenging for mothers to take that time away from their kids and their full-time jobs to be musicians.
I found my way to continue music performance and music experience in spite of the fact that I was so busy doing other things.
It caused me to be a bit of a jack of all trades and master of none because I didn't have a lot of time to focus and go super far in any one of my instruments or vocally.
But I've had a lot of fun and I've had a lot of experiences.
You can still do it.
You have to have a lot of energy and you have to work at it, too.
- Well, and knowing you, Tana, I would qualify that and say master or jack of all trades and master of many, that sort of aesthetic and pride that you have for doing things well.
Nothing seems to be lesser than, which means a hot burning star.
- Well, that's awfully nice, Eric.
If there had been 40 hours in a day, no, but there was this much time, there were all these priorities and I kept music as a big part of it.
Ever so grateful and hope to just keep on sailing with that for as long as I can.
- Yeah, I was thinking of it.
I started piano when I was four years old.
My mom and dad.
My dad was a artistic person and played rhythm guitar, sang, but nothing professional.
But he wanted his kids to have a musical background.
And so, I had the good fortune of having parents that got me started early in music and I've never stopped playing music.
And so, when I think about my other jobs that I've had throughout my life, I've always looked at those jobs, although I've dedicated every bit of my soul to every job I've tried to accomplish, I've always thought of those as being secondary to my music.
I've always thought of music as being who I am and all these other things as a vehicle to get to play the music.
I feel fortunate and I feel we're lucky to be able to do what we do musically.
Obviously, it takes a lot of work and that kind of stuff.
But in contrast to the other things that I've done in my life, I've always kinda held that as being the primary.

Obviously, you've done so many years together just the two of you, and yet, opted to bring in two other friends with similar zany sense of humor, and philosophical attitudes - Yeah.
- about life and playful but serious, and earnest and smart regard of everything.
Why add two, and secondly, why add those two?
- Geno is amazing, Adam is amazing.
Both of those guys I had the good fortune of playing with over the years prior to us doing this filming and recording.
- It didn't take long for us to talk abut Geno and Adam because they're friends, they're fun- - They're neighbors.
- They're neighbors.
We're all Belgradians.
They're awesome musicians and we wanted to enjoy the process as much as we wanted to grow musically through the process.
We wanted to have a really good time.
We have a lot of fun together, great sense of humor, all three of these guys, and it's been awesome.
- There's a level of trust, too.
- There is.
- There's something about trust and being a musician and especially ones that you are doing something that you feel is meaningful, like I feel that the show, we feel that the show's a meaningful part of our lives.
We know that the statements that are gonna make musically are going to be inventive, creative, completely founded in the skills they've developed over the years.
They're not limited to just playing within the constraints of what they've heard.
They're actually inventive musicians which is so much fun for us and that's the trust that, we're trusting that, that's what they're bringin' in and it's just this organic thing that happens.
- Well, and you guys having worked together as a duo for decades.
- Yeah.
- In fact, 10 years just at the venue that we're in for four months every summer for 10 years.
That's a long haul.
- Yeah.
- And up at Big Sky, I remember you guys were up there, and you're playing to such a diverse crowd that you've sort of fashioned this poly stylistic approach, so you're drawing music from all these different genres and not making it into one thing but doing all these different things in a different way.
- Too true.
- So, having two musicians who can, not just play drums behind that or bass behind that but who know those styles and can go country - Absolutely.
- or can go bluegrass or can go jazz, or can go rock, - Yeah, super flexible.
- whatever you want.
- Super flexible they are.
We always say we cross decades and genres and it's true, true.
We go way back and we do current things, but when we, we were playing up at Big Sky for Aprés Ski, and the people who own the Covered Wagon Ranch where we're at today, were having dinner and they come to us afterwards and said, "Would you be interested in playing at the Covered Wagon Ranch?"
And so, we talked a little bit about it and we said, "Are you looking for like, a whole night of country?"
And we do country but the whole night would be a stretch.
And they said, "No, we loved everything you did."
So, we do R&B, we do jazz, we do Americana, we do a little country.
- Blues.
- We do some originals.
So, what a cool venue in Montana.
It's one of the oldest active dude ranches or guest ranches in Montana and you get all kinds of people and you get all kinds of music and that just fits for what we like to do.
- Yeah.

- Yeah.
- How do you choose the next tune?
How have you chosen the tunes that you've chosen?
How do you bring it to each other, or do you both just have this simultaneous, ta da!
Thinking of the same tune?
- Sometimes.
I think we're both sensitive to the fact that we don't like to, in a typical sense where we're lookin' at songs, there are exceptions to this but I'd say as a rule, we would probably take a B side of someone's record rather than doing something that's been over played.
Also, the genre that it falls into.
I find myself that I'm probably more comfortable playing rhythm and blues than anything else.
So, rhythm and blues always, even if it's like a Chris Stapleton rhythm and blues kinda feel, it doesn't have to be specifically the Four Tops or the Temps or somebody like that.
It could be a whole host of other people doing it but the style for me, kinda predicates whether, first of all, I liked the song well enough to maybe consider including it in the repertoire, and then thinking about how it relates to what we could do and how we could do it together.
- I used to be so drawn to big band music, and my parents were.
I was the sixth.
I came way later in life and they were World War II big band ballroom dancers, and sometimes I thought as I was growing up maybe it was 'cause of that, 'cause we heard so much of that in the home and we did ballroom dancing, but that was a big love for me.
Latin, anything Latin.
Latin jazz, a salsa, a samba.
Anything like that just draws me in.
I was born and raised on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation in Wolf Point, Montana.
And lived up there the better part of 27 years.
Started teaching up there in Poplar, and we were lucky enough to get amazing musicians that came from the Twin Cities.
When I was in eighth grade these two guys came, a vocal guy and a band guy, and they came fresh outta their masters degrees up to the reservation so they could pay off their school loans easier.
And we got them and Doug Nemone, Brian Lystrude, and what they gave us in terms of an overall foundation of music as well as, so classical, but jazz.
We learned improvisation.
We made records.
We had vocal groups.
We had jazz history as a class.
And that just set this wonderful stage for going off from our little town of Wolf Point where there wasn't all that much to do unless you created your fun for yourself, to have a whole lifetime of music because of their inspiration, and I'm forever grateful for that.
So, shout out to music educators, teachers, people who influence us.
