Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipthe man accused of killing Sayreville councilwoman Eunice Dwumfour will remain Behind Bars without bail after pleading not guilty this morning during his first court appearance at the middlex County Courthouse 29-year-old Virginia native Rashid Ali bayam is facing several charges including first-degree murder for the death of the 30-year-old Council woman who was shot 14 times while in her car outside her home last February a senior correspondent to Flanigan reports tensions were running high as the dram of War family came face to face with their daughter's accused killer for the first time an unbearably tense and emotional courtroom scene the victim's weeping family sat in a row right behind her alleged killer while Rasheed Bam's attorney argued that he deserved to be released pending trial for the murder of unise dfor she died in her car prosecutors say shot in a hail of 14 bullets outside her seille home after the judge denied bail the victim's grief stricken mother hurled a water bottle at her daughter's accused murderer Mary dfor was charged with a disorderly person's offense their attorney says Sheriff's officers should have used better judgment the entire family is very emotional uh this is the first time they've been in close proximity to the individual who's accused of taking their daughter's life uh it was very traumatic and very upsetting for them she was handcuffed in the courtroom she was taken back uh in the processing area of the courthouse this marks Bam's first court appearance here in New Jersey after he fought extradition from Virginia for eight weeks his attorney called the prosecution's case circumstantial based on phone records and Easy Pass pings that allegedly tracked Bam from Virginia to the area around the murder scene in sville and back again this is highly circumstantial and does it really prove that this depend Beyond a reasonable Beyond A Reasonable Doubt shot anyone at any time Thomas Ashley tried to get this detention hearing postponed again asking for more time to review what he called 6,000 pages of States evidence he also argued that his client had no discernable motive for committing the crime there's no indication whatsoever that shows that Mr bidam had any reason whatsoever at any time to shoot the victim none none whatsoever while Council mentions that we have not provided a motive it is not the state's obligation to sling explain to the defense why someone does something we are here to make sure it's clear not only to the defense but to the people that this is the person who committed the offense assistant prosecutor Amber Gibb says the victim acting as a spiritual leader had shared a communal Church living area with Binum for a few months and Gibbs explains files of evidence have been available to the defense for weeks this family has been waiting to come to court to have Justice for the victim here their daughter Unice Jun for to delay this case any further that's where there's Injustice Gibbs laid out the evidence against bham who's already been indicted by a grand jury on murder and weapons charges she told the court ballistics had matched a Glock handgun in Bam's possession to shell casings from the murder that Bam's had two restraining Ord filed against him after the murder and posed an extreme Flight Risk judge Joseph P called the state's case strong and compelling and ordered B him detained based on the totality of the circumstances including the brutally horrific nature of the crime and the weight of the evidence this court finds that the fendant has failed to rebut the presumption for detention with the proof necessary to show that he does not pose a danger to the community the defense can challenge the cour decision but for now binham remains Behind Bars pending trial in New Brunswick I'm Brenda Flanigan NJ Spotlight news
