When Dreeah Austin died in July, two weeks after delivering a healthy baby girl, she became one of roughly two dozen women in New Jersey who will die this year of pregnancy-related issues, almost all from preventable causes. An outsize proportion of those women are Black, like Austin. Experts say her story underscores gaps that remain in New Jersey’s maternal care system.
