Lack of clarity seems to undermine federal assurances the drones pose no threat
Democrats and Republicans in New Jersey have found common ground over the unknown drones in the night skies. While officials with the Department of Homeland Security, FBI and Federal Aviation Administration have said the drones, which have also now been spotted in Delaware, do not pose a threat to the public, they also have said they don’t know the origin of the drones.

The FBI and Homeland Security are continuing to reassure the public that any drones spotted don't pose a safety threat, though they haven't said for sure where they're coming from.
Many experts believe most of what residents are seeing are actually planes, and other manned aircraft.
At the same time, lawmakers on the state, federal and local levels are calling for more transparency and involvement from the white House, pointing to recent alleged drone activity over critical infrastructure like military installations as cause for concern.
Governor Murphy reached out directly to President Biden, sending him a letter about his growing concern over the sightings and lack of answers.
As Ted Goldberg reports, some fed up residents and elected officials are starting to take matters into their own hands.
Determined to uncover the truth behind the mystery in the skies.
New Jersey's elected Democrats and Republicans have found common ground on the unknown drones up in the air.
The feds maintain that the drones don't pose a threat, but they haven't said who's flying the drones or where they come from.
That clearly is ludicrous.
At first statement is incongruent to sensibility.
Honestly, when you don't know the origin, the operator and where they end up.
You can't say that there is no threat if you don't know where they're coming from.
How do you know they don't pose a threat?
Senate president Nick Scutari had a briefing yesterday about the drones, and tells me he asked for an update this morning.
They flew in around new Jersey for a few weeks now, breaking the law by occasionally turning off their lights at night and not registering with the Federal Aviation Administration.
It seems to me that the federal government should do something to identify those flying objects, whether it is captured shooting it down over a safe area while they can.
They have the technology that the state does not have.
I represent district 24, which is heavily condensed with hunters, gun owners, two advocates.
You can't tell me that there's not going to be a point where someone's not going to take matters into their own hands.
That could really have tragic circumstances.
Senator Andy Kim joined law enforcement last night in 100 and county spotting drones near Round Valley Reservoir and North 100 in high school.
I know it's something that's alarming a lot of people.
I'm certainly going to be having for following conversations with the FBI, with Homeland Security, with the governor's office.
And they don't purely do not know where they're coming from.
And they should find out, because otherwise the public is going to continue around the anxiety and, and have other narratives as to what their sources.
I understand why there's quote unquote conspiracy theories, but I don't even like to call them that.
Now, I just like to say people are, you know, people are doing their own investigation.
As recently as yesterday, Congressman Jeff Van Drew said he had sources telling him that Iran was flying the drones from a nearby ship.
Despite repeated denials from the Pentagon.
I hope and I pray that my sources are wrong.
They could be.
I hope there is no threat.
But hope alone is not a plan.
The fact is that we cannot ignore and we cannot just look away.
Van drew walked back his claim this morning, saying.
New satellite images show drone ships are currently stationed off the southern coast of Iran.
This new information only brings us closer to figuring out what is really going on.
It is unacceptable to hear the government contradict itself by saying they do not know who is operating these drones, while at the same time telling us there is no reason to be concerned if a nation state was flying drones.
They're not going to have lights on and they're not going to fly them at an altitude where people can hear.
We do it all the time overseas.
Rob Damico used to lead the FBI's counter drone unit and spoke with NJ Spotlight News yesterday.
While he agrees that the drones are a concern.
He thinks most of the sightings aren't anything out of the ordinary.
I truly think that 90% of these sightings are manned aircraft.
When you look at them and the landing lights and the navigation lights and how they fly their manned aircraft, there's a number of, false reports.
But, you know, at the end of the day, it's, there's definitely something that's concerning.
And it's concerning our residents.
Sean Golden is the sheriff of Monmouth County, where drones have been seen flying over naval weapons station early.
Golden hopes Governor Phil Murphy will declare a temporary declaration of emergency to stop drones from flying at night.
The declaration of emergency would draw attention to the state and the fact that the governor does need federal resources here to help to.
That would, assist him in activating maybe the Air National Guard so that they can do some patrol and observation.
Governor Murphy wrote to the white House yesterday asking for answers while drones have now been spotted in Delaware bringing this mystery across state lines.
