- 36 years.

Now let's talk about our Golden Vessel tonight.
I'm always thrilled to talk to our Golden Vessels and salute your life.
Here we go.
Mrs. Martha Poole Simmons of Montgomery, Alabama.
She's a writer for the "Alabama Gazette" and she serves our Armed Forces veterans through the Red Cross.
Yes, she has a special heart for making sure that the Armed Force retirees and veterans know that they are loved.
She's a volunteer at the Central Alabama Veterans Healthcare outpatient clinic.
And she works to obtain a grant.
She worked to obtain a grant for the Crump senior citizens and you got it too.
It was a pretty good bit of money to help out in the community.
So on tonight, she was also inducted into the Senior Citizen Hall of Fame in 2024.
You're a very special lady, Mrs. Martha Poole Simmons.
We salute you and we dedicate the entire "Alabama Gospel Roots" show to you.

- One thing you know, I was a little concerned 'cause when I was at that service, now, of course there were a lot of wonderful people there but I think I was the only brother of this color there.
And then brother, you walked up to me.
You know what you asked me?
- What'd I ask you.
I can't remember.
That was a long time ago.
- Do you work here?
- I did?
I did.
Yes I did actually.
I remember that now.
Sorry about that.
Well, I didn't know.
Thanks for having me anyway.
- What kind of work did you think I was doing?
- I didn't know.
I thought, you know... - You pleading the fifth right now.
I didn't know.
- Yeah, I plead the fifth.
I didn't know.
That's me.
(George laughing) Alright, well listen, you see it didn't bother me, right?
Because we've been trying to get you on the show.
- Well, if it didn't bother you, you shouldn't have brought it up.
- Okay, well you know what?
I keep trying to let you off the hook.
But now if you really want to go there now.
- No, I don't.
- I don't know why you came up to me and asked me if I worked there.
You didn't ask nobody there but me.
- I did too.
- Who else did you ask?
- The guy that worked there.

You know what I think I'm gonna do is, since you and I are so different on opposite poles, we gonna be the best of friends.

- Yeah, you know what I'm gonna say.

- What do you need to know?
I'll tell you.
- Okay.

But listen, you are an amputee, right?
- I sure am.
- How long?
- About a year.
A little over a year.
- Okay.
And what would you like to say to encourage the public?
- Well, I would like to say to all the people out there that people say you can't do something, or you lose your leg and you think you are worthless and you no good for nothing.
You just tell them, you know, like they told me when I lost my leg, they said, "You can't sing no more."
I said, "They didn't take my vocal chords.
I mean, I can still sing."
- Yes sir.
- You know?
- Yes sir.
- I might wobble a little bit but I can still sing.
- Okay.
- But I just want people to know that they can do stuff.
You know, just because you're an amputee don't mean you can't do it.
- That's exactly right.
- You have to take care of doing it.
- Yes sir.
But you can still do it.
- You can still do it.
- And you're doing it very well.
And I really was blessed - I try.

- I'm originally from Fort Payne, Alabama.
- Okay.
And where do you live now?
- Rainsville, Alabama.
- Rainsville Alabama.

And we've got that opportunity tonight.
All kinds of skills and ministries that take place throughout "Alabama Gospel Roots" territory.
But then there's some people who influence Alabama and assist Alabama.
And we go to pick 'em up.
Got my dear friend Dennis Williams.
Dennis does a lot of booking for the shows and he does an excellent job.
And Dennis, you discovered this gentleman, I'm gonna let you take an opportunity to introduce everybody to him.
- Actually, I was talking to his assistant Amber, and she had reached out and said that his radio station, he would like to get more out.
So I called him, reached out to him and Brother Mark Huffine in East Tennessee.
- East Tennessee.
- So I invited him to come in and share his ministry with us.
- Well, he's here.

It's on two stations in Germany and then one in America, but whatever.
What I'm trying to do also is get into some smaller markets.
My show is free, I do it for free.

It's all about sharing the Word.

As we stand right now, they tell me I've got about 2.5 million listeners.

- And the unique part, I'm the only southern gospel on all three of those stations.

- And so between that and radio business, I stay busy.

So what would you say to encourage the people out there who may be just kind of thinking about doing what you're doing and kind of may be fearful, hesitant, what would you say to them?
- I would say pray about it.
And if you feel like the Lord's leading you to minister in song, practice and go for it.
