Keeping watch on the patterns of these birds is essential, so that's why organizations like Hawk Ridge Bird Observatory are always out collecting data. This is one of the two count sites that we use in the spring to count migratory bird traffic.
We are part of a big network of counters across the country.
It's called the Hawk Migration Association of North America.
So all the Raptors are all counted and combined in there and we can look at trends nationwide.
We all felt winter in a big way this year and so did the birds, especially the long distance migrators.
They're going to be triggered by day length and the need to breed and the others that are shorter distance migrators are going to be triggered more frequently by food and weather.
And we know from our research and work with radar and trafficking of birds that this central flyway is the flyway that 60 to 75% of the birds that migrate in North America use.
This is the big one.
So seeing what's happening with the trends here is really important.
