(upbeat music) - Utah's Department of Workforce Services offers statewide job seekers a robust suite of tools from resume help to interview prep.
Here to tell us more is Sheila Oelerich.
Sheila, thank you so much for being here.
- Yeah, thanks for having me.
- So tell me about some of the tools that you guys offer to help job seekers.
- Yeah.
- Find the right place.
- Thank you.
Yeah, I think the first thing we, tips that we like to help people with is to update your resume.
You know, employers typically spend 20 seconds scanning your resume.
Because of this, you really need to research that job description and put all relevant experience into your resume.
And then after that, you need to prep for that work or prep for that interview.
I would research the employer, so you can highlight to them why you are the best candidate for the job.
And then also, so you are prepared for the number one interview question.
Do you wanna guess what that is?
- Mm, ahh.
What is it?
- It's "Tell me about yourself."
And so don't go personal.
Keep it all professional.
You need to have like a 30 to 60 second interview or shoot, a 30 or 60 second of commercial about yourself, so you can highlight your skills and qualifications.
- It's so important because that helps with the first impressions and getting to know the person that's interviewing you or them getting to know you and seeing if you're the right fit for the job.
I also heard that you offer training or workshops for people who are seeking employment?
- Yeah, my favorite workshop right now is called "Find a Job You Love."
It's a live virtual workshop.
It's every Tuesday at one o'clock.
You can find it on jobs.utah.gov by signing into your My Job Search account.
It's gonna teach you all the skills and job search resources that you need to find that next job.
- With so many people searching, what kind of words of wisdom or encouragement do you have for them as they might be seeing rejection after rejection?
- Keep trying, keep trying.
And then come into one of our one-stop centers.
We have career coaching on site.
Just come on in, and we'll give you a help.
- All right, well, thank you so much for that information.
If you would like to learn more about these programs and how you can take advantage of them, just head to jobs.utah.gov.
It is the Job Resources and Services Center with Utah Department of Workforce Services.
I'm Liz Adeola, and thank you so much for watching "Contact."
