SHE STRIVES TO MAKE A PERSONAL CONNECTION AND EVOKE DEEP CONVERSATION WITH HER AUDIENCE.
>> AN EXHIBITION I'VE BEEN WORKING ON THAT EXPLORES THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN HUMAN BEINGS AND FLORA, PLANTS, FLOWERS, WHATEVER IT MAY BE.
JUST SORT OF GETTING AN INDIVIDUAL'S SPECIFIC PERSPECTIVE ON A PLANT OF THEIR CHOOSING AND WHY THEY PICKED IT.
SOME OF THEM PRESENTED A MEMORY, A LOVED ONE WHO PASSED.
I HAD ONE MODEL SPECIFICALLY WHO WAS RAISED ON A FARM THAT WAS GROWING COFFEE.
FOR HIM THAT WAS A SPECIAL MEMORY.
IT WAS A REWARDING EXPERIENCE TO HAVE PEOPLE SHARE PERSONAL MEMORIES AND BE ABLE TO INTERPRET THEM IN MY OWN WAY.
ONE THING ABOUT PAINTING IS BEING ABLE TO SHARE STORIES.
RIGHT NOW I'M WORKING ON TWO MAIN SERIES.
THE PRIMARY SERIES I'M WORKING ON IS ABOUT MY FAMILY AND MY HERITAGE.
BUT I'M ALSO PLAYING WITH THEMES OF JUST HOME AND WHAT HOME MEANS TO ME AND WHAT HOME MEANS TO OTHER PEOPLE.
THEY'RE GOING HAND IN HAND, BUT ONE IS MORE ABOUT ME AND ONE HAS MORE LEEWAY FOR OTHER PEOPLE TO SHARE THEIR STORIES.
I'VE BEEN DOING A LOT MORE RESEARCH ABOUT MY FAMILY.
A LOT OF CONVERSATIONS WITH RELATIVES AND FAMILY MEMBERS.
MY FAMILY IS GETTING OLDER.
I THINK AS I'VE GOTTEN OLDER, I HAVE A GREATER APPRECIATION FOR FAMILY AND MY HERITAGE AND EXPLORING THAT.
CREATIVE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN IN MY FAMILY FOR GENERATIONS.
A LOT OF THEM WEREN'T ABLE TO NECESSARILY PURSUE THOSE CREATIVE DREAMS.
I SOMETIMES FEEL LIKE A SENSE OF PRIDE OR WEIGHT IN PURSUING THESE THEMES BECAUSE I FEEL LIKE I'M HONORING THEM IN A WAY.
FOR THIS EXHIBITION I'M CURRENTLY WORKING ON, IT'S BEEN A LOT OF FINDING PHOTOGRAPHS AND THEN HEARING STORIES ABOUT THEM AND FROM THERE I WILL DO SKETCHES OR FURTHER RESEARCH ON CULTURAL SYMBOLISM AND THINGS OF THAT NATURE.
MY ART IS REALLY A TOOL FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND MYSELF BETTER AND WORK THROUGH THINGS THAT I'M GOING THROUGH AS A YOUNG WOMAN.
SO THEN I WILL COLLECT PHOTO REFERENCES FROM MEMORIES, FAMILY OR FROM PEOPLE I KNOW IN REAL LIFE AND USE THEM AS A CONDUIT TO EXPRESS WHAT IT IS THAT I WANT TO SAY.
I PREFER REALISM.
THAT'S WHERE I'M COMFORTABLE.
SO I WILL KIND OF START WITH WHAT PHOTO DO I WANT TO INCLUDE IN THIS PIECE?
FROM THERE IT'S ABOUT COLORS AND ABSTRACTING FURTHER THINGS WHETHER THAT'S NICATING A NARRATIVE.
I HAVE SYMBOLS I REPEAT THAT HAVE A CORE TIE TO WHO I AM AS A PERSON.
FOR ME, A LOT OF TIMES THERE'S A HALO ELEMENT.
MY FIRST SERIES OF WORK WAS UNPACKING RELIGIOUS FEELINGS, AS SOMEONE RAISED IN THE ROMAN ITALIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH.
I DO A LOT OF HOUSES AND BIRDHOUSES.
THAT'S FROM MY CHILDHOOD.
I HAVE THIS MOTIF I USE A LOT.
THOSE ARE KIND OF -- I PULL THOSE IN A LOT BECAUSE THEY'RE SPECIAL TO ME.
THE TWO PIECES HERE ARE BOTH ABOUT AMBIGUOUS GRIEF.
IT'S NOT SOMEONE WHO HAS DIED BUT SOMEONE NO LONGER IN YOUR LIFE FOR VARIOUS LONG LIST OF REASONS.
YOU HAVE TO GRIEVE THAT PERSON EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE STILL HERE.
IN THESE PIECES, THEY ARE EXPLORING THE WAY THAT FEELS.
THEY ARE TITLED, VISIBLE ABSENCE AND GONE BUT STILL HERE.
THEY ARE BOTH ABOUT TWO PEOPLE IN MY LIFE ARE VERY MUCH ALIVE BUT I DON'T HAVE IN MY LIFE, EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE IMPORTANT TO MY IDENTITY GROWING UP.
THEY'RE NOT IN MY LIFE FOR GOOD REASON.
I RECREATED THIS PHOTO, I WOULD BE PAINTING THESE PEOPLE INTO THE PACE.
I DIDN'T WANT TO DO THAT.
I DON'T WANT TO PAINT THEM.
HOW DO I CONVEY THERE'S A PERSON HERE, BUT I DON'T WANT TO SEE THEIR FACE?
LIKE THE TERM AMBIGUOUS GRIEF, I WANTED THE PEOPLE TO BE AMBIGUOUS.
PEOPLE CAN RELATE TO THE IDEA.
THERE'S SOMEONE IN YOUR LIFE WHO YOU LOVE AND CARE ABOUT, BUT YOU CAN'T HAVE THEM IN YOUR LIFE FOR VARIOUS REASONS.
I THINK ALTHOUGH THESE PAINTINGS FEATURE ME, I HOPE SOMEONE CAN SEE AND THINK ABOUT MAYBE SOMEONE IN THEIR LIFE THEY FEEL THE SAME WAY ABOUT.
ONE OF THE THINGS THAT MY PROCESS HAS EVOLVED IS I USED TO BE REALLY SELF-CONSCIOUS ABOUT WHAT I WAS MAKING WAS NOT SELLABLE.
BECAUSE WHAT I WAS MAKING WAS SO TIED TO MY IDENTITY AND WHO I AM AS A PERSON, I WOULDN'T BE ABLE TO MAKE MONEY.
I'M WORKING ON COMING TO TERMS WITH THE FACT THAT'S OKAY, NOT EVERYTHING I'M MAKING HAS TO BE SELLABLE.
I HAD SOMEONE TELL ME AFTER I DID AN INTERVIEW TWO YEARS AGO, AND THIS PERSON WAS LIKE, YOU SOUND LIKE YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT.
YOU KNOW WHAT?
I DECIDED THAT'S OKAY, BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT.
HALF THE TIME I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING.
THAT'S THE POINT OF WHY I'M MAKING STUFF BECAUSE I DON'T KNOW WHO I AM AND I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING.
I'M JUST TRYING TO EMBRACE THAT AND KEEP TRYING NEW THINGS AND FIGURE OUT WHAT I WANT TO MAKE AND WHY I'M MAKING IT.

IT'S DETACHING MYSELF FROM --JUST FOLLOWING THE EMOTION, BUT I'M HERE AS A TOOL.
I'M CREATING.
BUT EMOTION IS GOING BY ITS OWN.

IT TAKES TIME TO ARRIVE TO THAT STAGE.
I THINK AS WE ARE GETTING MORE EXPERIENCED --I'M NOT SAYING IT'S ME GETTING OLDER, BECAUSE ALL CREATORS ARE ALWAYS YOUNG.
YOU CAN'T GROW UP.
YOU CAN'T.
THERE'S A LITTLE CHILD AND WE NEED TO NOURISH THAT CHILD.
THAT CHILD IS TAKING A RIDE WITH EXPERIENCED ME, PRETTY MUCH.
I ACTUALLY PAINTED MY LIFE.
I STARTED SESSION DESIGN AND TEXTILE DESIGN.
I PURSUED FASHION DESIGN BACK HOME IN SERBIA.
EVEN THEN I WAS CREATING CLOTHING.
MY FINAL TOUCH WAS PAINTING ON THEM.
IT'S NOT PAINT IS MY ONLY MEDIUM, BUT THAT'S THE MEDIUM THAT MAKES ME MOST ALIVE.
I JUST GOT BURNED OUT THERE, BECAUSE I WAS REALLY GOING FULL SPEED FOR SEVEN YEARS.
IT'S NOT THAT IT WAS TOO MUCH BUT WHEN YOU HEAR PEOPLE GETTING BURNED OUT, THEY ARE NOT BURNED OUT BECAUSE THEY WORK A LOT.
THEY ARE BURNED OUT BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT THEY ARE DOING IS REALLY NOT SOMETHING THAT THEIR SOUL IS FEELING FROM.
SO IT WASN'T EXACTLY THE MEDIUM, IT WASN'T EXACTLY THAT CREATIVE OUTLET THAT I NEEDED.
I FOUND OUT WHEN I CAME HERE.
SO I HAVE A PLAN.
MY PLAN WAS, I'M GOING TO BECOME FULL-TIME ARTIST.
ONE DAY I'M GOING TO SAY NO TO EVERYTHING ELSE THAT IS COMING MY WAY.
TV SHOWS, MOVIES, STYLING.
I LEARNED TO SAY NO SO I CAN ACTUALLY FULLY BE IN MY STUDIO AND CREATE.
IT DOESN'T REALLY ONLY TAKE, OKAY, YOU GO TO YOUR STUDIO AND YOU JUST CREATE.
NO.
ESPECIALLY IN TODAY'S WORLD, YOU NEED TO BE BUSINESS SAVVY AND YOU NEED TO KNOW HOW TO ACTUALLY PLACE YOURSELF WHERE YOU WANT TO BE AND HOW TO -- IF YOU CAN'T JUST INJECT YOURSELF, YOU NEED TO MAKE A PLAN.
WHATEVER YOU HAVE A PASSION FOR AND WHATEVER YOU HAVE A DRIVE FOR, IF YOU REALLY PURSUE IT FULL- TIME, IT'S GOT TO WORK.
I AM A BIG PROMOTER OF SPREADING MORE LOVE.
I THINK OUR JOB AS ARTISTS IS TO USE OUR VOICE.
WHATEVER YOU ARE STANDING FOR, YOU HAVE TO COMMUNICATE IT.
EVEN THOUGH WE USE THE VOICE IN WORDS TO COMMUNICATE, OUR ART COMMUTE COMMUNICATES MUCH FURTHER.
OUR JOB AS ARTISTS IS TO BRING THAT OUT, TO BRING THE EMOTION OUT, TO BRING SOMETHING POSITIVE, TO SPREAD LOVE.
SIMPLE LIKE THAT.
YOU JUST SPREAD LOVE.
YOU FIGURE OUT HOW.
I DON'T SEE WORLD WITHOUT ART.
ART IS IN ANY FORM, IS MORE ABOUT HOW DO WE ACTUALLY CARRY OUT OUR CULTURE, HOW DO WE CARRY WHAT WE DO?
HOW DO WE COOK?
EVERY ARTIST, NO MATTER WHAT WE ARE SAYING THAT WE ARE DOING AND WHAT OUR WORK IS, WE ARE ACTUALLY CAPTURING THE MOMENT OF TIME.
IF THERE'S NO ART, THERE'S NO HISTORY.
THAT'S HOW IMPORTANT ART IS.
I THINK IF THEY TAKE IT OUT OF SCHOOLS, ACTUALLY, IT'S GOING TO BRING ART INTO THE COMPLETELY NEXT AMAZING LEVEL.
YES, WE ARE SCARED OF TAKING ART OUT OF SCHOOLS.
BUT WE CAN'T STOP ARTISTS FROM BEING AN ARTIST.
YOU CAN'T.
NO, YOU CAN'T.
THERE'S NOTHING TO DO ABOUT THIS.
YOU CAN'T STOP SOMEONE.
YOU CAN MAKE THEM MISERABLE.
BY PUTTING THEM TO DO SOMETHING ELSE.
BUT THAT'S FASCISM.
SO YOU CANNOT --YOU HAVE A CREATIVE KID, YOU CAN'T STOP THEM.
IF YOU LEAVE THEM ALONE, THE NEXT THING YOU KNOW THEY ARE DRAWING ON THE WALL.
IF YOU DIDN'T TELL THEM NOT TO, NOW YOU TELL THEM NOT TO, THEY WILL GO OUTSIDE AND DRAW ON THE WALL.
STOPPING ART IN SCHOOLS IS JUST GOING TO CREATE MORE REBELS.
I SEE IT AS A POSITIVE.

IT'S REALLY GREAT SYNERGY BETWEEN ALL OF US.
IT JUST --IT HELPS ELEVATE THE SPREE ACROSS THE BOARD.

UNDERSTANDING COLOR, HOW SHAPES RELATE TO ONE ANOTHER, WHAT LOOKS GOOD TO THE EYE, ODD VERSUS EVEN NUMBERS.
THERE'S A LOT OF THAT IN WHAT WE DO.
IT'S A GREAT WAY FOR PEOPLE TO EXPRESS THEMSELVES THROUGH A MEDIUM THAT REALLY APPEALS TO THAT EXTRA SENSE THAT YOU DON'T NECESSARILY GET WHEN YOU ARE CRUISING THROUGH THE ART MUSEUM, WHICH IS FLAVOR, TASTE, TEXTURE, THE SOUND IT MAKES WHEN YOU CHEW.
ALL OF THAT IS THE EMBODIMENT OF THE ARTS.
