FROM LEARNING OUR FIRST WORDS TO ATTENDING SCHOOL IN OUR FORMATIVE YEARS, AND EVEN TAKING THAT EDUCATION FURTHER, WHETHER IT'S IN COLLEGE OR PURSUING A CAREER.
BUT LEARNING DOESN'T STOP THERE FOR MOST PEOPLE, BECAUSE LIFE CIRCUMSTANCES ARE SOMETIMES OUR BEST TEACHERS.
IN THIS FIRST STORY, WE MEET A WOMAN WHOSE HARROWING EXPERIENCE WITH HER SON'S HEALTH TRANSFORMED HER VIEW ON LIFE AND IN TURN, SHE CREATED A FAMILY BUSINESS TO HELP HER COMMUNITY.
WE GO TO BLUEBERG MEDALS FARM IN LORRAINE COUNTY FOR MORE ON THAT STORY.
>> CHRIS AND I MET WHEN I WAS A SENIOR IN COLLEGE.
WE WERE BLESSED WITH FOUR KIDS.
OUR PLAN WAS, I WAS GOING TO TEACH AND HE WAS GOING TO WORK AT FORD AND WE WERE GOING TO RAISE OUR KIDS OUT IN THE COUNTRY AND RURAL VIBE, RURAL SETTING, MAYBE AN ANIMAL HERE OR THERE, 4H PROJECT.
ZACK IS OUR OLDEST AND LUCAS CAME AROUND THREE YEARS LATER.
EARLY IN HIS LIFE, WE NOTICED THAT HE DIDN'T SLEEP WELL, HE HAD SOME HEALTH ISSUES, CHRONIC EAR INFECTIONS.
HE WAS THEN DIAGNOSED WITH EOSINAPHELIC DISORDER AT 7 1/2.
AND THAT'S WHERE OUR WHOLE JOURNEY TOOK A LITTLE DETOUR.
>> IT CAN ATTACK ANYONE IN YOUR GI SYSTEM, SO WITH LUCAS, IT WAS HIS ESOPHAGUS.
SO HIS ESOPHAGUS BECAME A BATTLEGROUND BETWEEN HIS WHITE BLOOD CELLS AND FOOD PROTEIN.
FOR SOME PEOPLE, IT MIGHT BE PROTEIN THAT'S IN DAIRY OR WHEAT OR CORN OR SOY.
HIS DAGSZ DIAGNOSIS CAME VERY EARLY INTO THE RESEARCH OF THE DISEASE.
HE WAS ON THE FOREFRONT AND TRIAL END OF THE CONTROL OF THE DISEASE.
FOR HIM, IT BECAME AN EIGHT-FOOD ELIMINATION DIET.
WE REMOVED WHEAT, CORN, SOY, DAIRY, THE WHOLE PROTOCOL AND USED MEDICATIONS HOPEFULLY TO KEEP THE INFLAMMATION AT BAY.
UNFORTUNATELY FOR HIM, THAT DIDN'T WORK.
THE ONLY OPTION WAS TO REMOVE ALL FOOD FROM HIS DIET AND START ON A MEDICAL-BASED FORMULA.
AND AT THAT TIME, THE ONLY FOODS THAT DIDN'T HAVE A PROTEIN BINDER THAT WOULD ACTIVATE THE DISEASE WAS SUGAR.
SO HE HAD UNLIMITED SUGAR IN HIS DIET, AS WELL, SO AS A 12-YEAR-OLD, HE WAS, YOU KNOW, STARTED OFF LOVING IT, BECAUSE HE COULD HAVE AS MANY DUMDUM SUCKERS, PIXIE STICKS AS HE WANTED, AND REINTRODUCE FOODS INTO HIS DIET IN A VERY SCRIPTED PATTERN.
WE REALLY STARTED LOOKING AT LABELS.
IT WOULD TAKE TWO TO THREE HOURS TO GROCERY SHOP BECAUSE WE HAD TO READ EVERY LABEL.
WE NO LONGER DID PRE-PACKAGED ANYTHING, BECAUSE WE COULDN'T GUARANTEE THERE WOULDN'T BE SOMETHING IN THERE THAT MAY TRIGGER HIM.
REALLY A BIG PART OF OUR LIVES THEN KIND OF BECAME FOOD-BASED.
OUR FIRST VENTURE INTO FARMING STARTED WITH A BLUEBERRY PATCH.
AND SO, WE PLANTED 200 BLUEBERRY BUSHES.
STARTING NEXT SPRING, WE WERE ANTICIPATING THIS GREAT ABUNDANCE OF BLUEBERRIES AND BLUEBERRY JAMS AND MUFFINS AND EVERYTHING THAT WOULD ENTAIL WITH THAT, BUT THE BLUEBERRY BUSHES OBTAINED BLIGHT AND WIPED OUT THE ENTIRE -- WE DON'T HAVE ONE BUSH LEFT.
THAT WAS OUR FIRST GO-AROUND, WHICH DIDN'T GO SO WELL.
WE REALLY LOOKED INTO DEVELOPING HEIRLOOM VEGETABLES AND THAT LASTED A YEAR, BECAUSE BETWEEN BABIES AND KIDS AND WASHING BEETS AT MIDNIGHT AND CUTTING FLOWERS AT 4:00 A.M. TO TAKE THEM TO THE MARKET THE NEXT DAY, WE LEARNED TO HAVE GREAT RESPECT FOR THOSE WHO DO THAT KIND OF FARMING, BECAUSE IT IS A LABOR OF LOVE AND VERY INTENSE AND VERY KNOWLEDGE-BASED, WHICH WE DID NOT HAVE THAT KNOWLEDGE WHATSOEVER.
WHERE WE LIVE, THIS IS BEFORE AMAZON, BEFORE TRADER JOE'S, BEFORE ONLINE ANYTHING, THE CLOSEST MARKET THAT WE COULD REALLY FIND CLEAN MEAT, WHAT WE WOULD CALL CLEAN MEAT, WAS ABOUT AN HOUR AND 20 MINUTES AWAY.
SO THAT'S WHEN WE HAD THE DISCUSSION OF, DO YOU THINK THAT'S SOMETHING THAT, YOU KNOW, WE COULD DO?
WE SAVED UP EVERY PENNY AND BOUGHT FOUR PIGS, WITH THE THOUGHT THAT WORST CASE, WE DON'T SELL ANY, WE CAN ALWAYS FRIENDS, FAMILY, FOR OURSELVES, AND THEN PIGS LED TO CHICKENS LED TO BEEF LED TO LAMBS.
CONVENTIONAL FARMING HAS A PLACE IN SOCIETY AND, YOU KNOW, KUDOS TO ANYBODY IN AGRICULTURE.
THE WORK THAT YOU DO IS TRULY A PASSION.
WITH THAT, YOU KNOW, CONVENTIONAL FARMING IS A VERY TRADITIONAL ROW CROP FARMING OR YOU HAVE HUNDREDS OF HEAD OF BEEF.
WE'RE CONSIDERED MORE OF NICHE FARMING.
WE'RE VERY, VERY SMALL IN WHAT WE DO.
SO YOU KNOW, ALL OF OUR ANIMALS ARE OUT ON PASTURE.
NO GROWTH HORMONES, NO ANTIBODIES.
WE COMMITTED TO A NON-GMO FEED FOR THE ENTIRE FARM.
THOSE ARE THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO US, ECOLOGICALLY, SUSTAINABILITY, ENVIRONMENTALLY.
ALSO IS WHAT WE NEEDED TO DO TO FEED OUR SON.
BEING A YOUNG FARMER, MAYBE NOT IN AGE WISE, BECAUSE WE WERE NOT THAT YOUNG, BUT NEW TO THE WHOLE INDUSTRY OF AGRICULTURE, THE MARKET HAS BEEN REALLY HELPFUL, BECAUSE I THINK THERE'S MANY PEOPLE THAT ARE BAKERS OR BREWERS OR MEAT PRODUCERS, VEGETABLE PRODUCERS WHO HAVE A SIMILAR STORY.
MAYBE THEIR CHILD WASN'T SICK AND THEY NEEDED TO FIND A FOOD SOURCE FOR THEIR FAMILY, BUT SO MANY OF OUR FELLOW MARKETERS HAVE A STORY OF THEIR OWN TO TELL.
IT'S THROUGH THAT COMMUNITY THAT WE REALLY KIND OF WRAP AROUND EACH OTHER.
SO LUCAS LAST COUNT HAD 43 DIFFERENT MEDICAL PROCEDURES.
AT THE END OF ALL OF THAT, HE HAD 13 SAFE FOODS.
HE DECIDED HIS FRESHMAN YEAR IN COLLEGE THAT HE JUST NEEDED A BREAK FROM IT ALL AND HE REALLY WORKED ON LIKE CLEANING HIS DIET AND IS REALLY CONSCIENCE OF LABEL READING AND HAS COMMITTED TO A VERY ACTIVE LIFESTYLE.
SO HE'S AN AVID ROCK CLIMBER, AVID CYCLIST, AVID OUTDOOR ENTHUSIAST.
YOU KNOW, WE JOKE THAT WE SPENT 13 YEARS GETTING HIM WELL ENOUGH TO HANG OFF OF A 3/4-INCH ROPE, BUT HE'S HAPPY AND THRIVING AND LIVING HIS BEST LIFE.
MY JOURNEY PERSONALLY HAS BEEN LEARNING TO EMBRACE THE JOURNEY.
IT MAY NOT BE THE ONE THAT YOU IMAGINED OR DESIGNED OR EVEN HOPED FOR, BUT THERE IS GOOD AND GREATNESS THAT CAN BE FOUND IN EACH STEP OF THE WAY.
I THINK TELLING THE STORY IS A BIT HEALING.
IT BROUGHT US TOGETHER, FIGHTING THE BATTLE TOGETHER AS A FAMILY, AND BUILDING THE BUSINESS TOGETHER AS A FAMILY.
AND I THINK THAT PART OF MY JOURNEY IS, I HAVE LOVED MEETING ALL THE DIFFERENT PEOPLE.
YOU KNOW, OUR STORY IS SO SIMILAR TO SO MANY OTHERS.
THOSE THAT ARE SEEKING FOOD THAT CAN HEAL THEIR BODY AND HELP THEIR BODY.

WE ALSO NEED TO LEARN HOW TO LIVE AND FUNCTION IN THE WORLD SAFELY.
AND IN THE FIREARMS COMMUNITY, INITIATIVES LIKE LIFESIDE OHIO, THROUGH THE OHIO SUICIDE PREVENTION FOUNDATION ARE DEDICATED TO TEACHING HOW SAFE GUN STORAGE IS ESSENTIAL FOR HUNTERS, GUN RETAILERS, VETERANS, AND PUBLIC SAFETY OFFICIALS.
HERE'S MORE ON THAT INITIATIVE.
>> SO I'VE BEEN WORKING IN SUICIDE PREVENTION FOR ABOUT 11 YEARS.
A LOT OF IT'S SCHOOL-BASED, TO BEGIN WITH.
I'M WORKING IN CLASSROOMS, DELIVERING SUICIDE PREVENTION CURRICULUM, TALKING TO STUDENTS ABOUT WARNING SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS AND HOW TO GET HELP FOR THEMSELVES OR FOR A FRIEND.
AND THEN SOME COMMUNITY-BASED STUFF, AS WELL.
I'M THE CHAIR OF THE SUMMIT COUNTY COALITION.
I'VE SERVED ON THAT COALITION FOR A FEW YEARS AND DOING SOME TRAINING AROUND THE STATE, AS WELL.
ON TOP OF THAT, I'M AN AVID HUNTER AND FIREARMS OWNER.
I'VE BEEN HUNTING SINCE I WAS ABOUT 8 YEARS OLD, STARTED GOING WITH MY DAD AND GRANDPA AND GOT HOOKED.
FOR LIFESIDE OHIO, WE COME AT THIS COMPLETELY FROM AN APOLITICAL STANDPOINT.
WE DON'T TALK ABOUT BILLS OR LAWS, WE ARE SOLELY FOCUSED ON SUICIDE PREVENTION.
AND SUICIDE PREVENTION FOR FIREARMS OWNERS, FOR FIREARMS OWNERS.
THE PEOPLE WORKING ON LIFESIDE OHIO OWN FIREARMS FOR VARIOUS REASONS.
SO WE COME AT IT FROM THAT PERSPECTIVE THAT WHETHER YOU LIKE FIREARMS OR DON'T LIKE FIREARMS, YOU OWN, DON'T OWN, FOR OR AGAINST THEM, EVERYBODY IS FOR PROTECTING THE PEOPLE THAT THEY CARE ABOUT AND THE PEOPLE AROUND THEM.
SO WE KNOW THAT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT FIREARMS, THAT IF WE STORE THEM IN A SAFE WAY, IT REDUCES RISK FOR ALL COMES OF OUTCOMES.
WE KNOW THAT SAFE STORAGE DOESN'T ALWAYS MEANS THAT SOMEBODY ELSE DOESN'T GET AHOEFLD A FIREARM, IT COULD MEAN THAT IT'S A DELAYED EXPERIENCE.
WHEN WE TALK ABOUT SUICIDE, SUICIDE TENDS TO BE, ESPECIALLY FOR YOUTH, A VERY IMPULSIVE ACT.
IF WE KEEP A FIREARM LOCKED AND WE KEEP IT STORED, UNLOADED, IF WE KEEP AMMUNITION STORED TAKE SOMEBODY FIVE OR TEN MINUTES TO ACCESS THAT WEAPON, BUT THAT'S AN ADDITIONAL 5 TO 10 MINUTES FOR SOMEONE TO MAYBE INTERVENE OR FOR THAT PERSON WHO'S STRUGGLING MAYBE TO HAVE SECOND THOUGHTS AND COME TO A DIFFERENT CONCLUSION.
WE COME AT IT FROM FIREARMS OWNERS A LOT OF TIMES THINKING, WELL, WE'VE TRAINED OUR KIDS.
MY KIDS KNOW NOT TO TOUCH THE GUNS IN THE HOUSE, AND THEY KNOW HOW TO STORE SOMETHING SAFELY AND WHICH DIRECTION THAT A GUN SHOULD BE POINTED AND THE KIND OF BASIC TENANTS OF SAFETY WITH FIREARMS.
BUT WE ALSO COME AT THAT THINKING ABOUT THEM IN A RATIONALE MIND.
WHEN I WENT THROUGH HUNTER'S EDUCATION CLASS AS A KID, I WASN'T DEPRESSED OR SUICIDAL.
SO I LEARNED HOW TO HOLD AND HANDLE A FIREARM SAFELY.
IF I WOULD BE SUICIDAL, I'M PROBABLY NOT THINKING ABOUT SAFETY AT THAT POINT.
ALL OF THOSE LESSONS THAT I LEARNED GO RIGHT OUT THE WINDOW.
SO TAKING THAT ADDITIONAL STEP, LIKE LOCKING SOMETHING UP, IT GIVES IT TIME FOR THAT TRAINING THAT YOUR SON OR DAUGHTER HAS GONE THROUGH TO KICK IN.
IT GIVES THEM TIME TO HAVE RATIONALE THOUGHT INSTEAD OF CRISIS THOUGHT.
SO WE'RE GIVING THEM THAT ADDITIONAL TIME TO PREVENT THAT DEATH.
>> SO IF THERE WAS ONE THING THAT I WISH PEOPLE KNEW, IT WOULD BE THAT SUICIDAL THOUGHTS CAN BE NORMAL.
ANYBODY CAN EXPERIENCE A CRISIS, ANYBODY CAN HAVE SUICIDAL THOUGHTS.
BUT THERE ARE STEPS THAT WE CAN TAKE TO MITIGATE RISK.
WE CAN STORE THINGS SAFELY, WE CAN HAVE HONEST CONVERSATIONS.
AND IF WE'RE WILLING TO ASK ABOUT SUICIDE AND WE'RE WILLING TO TAKE THE STEPS TO LOWER THAT RISK, WE CAN REDUCE OUR SUICIDE RATE HERE IN THE STATE OF OHIO.
>>> THE UPKEEP OF OWNING A HOUSE CAN SOMETIMES BE OVERWHELMING, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE HOMES ARE OLDER.
FORTUNATELY, THERE ARE PROGRAMS LIKE THE ONE AT OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION TO HELP OWNERS NAVIGATE THE INS AND OUTS OF RESTORATION AND MAINTENANCE IN OLDER HOUSES.
WE HAVE THE CHANCE TO FOLLOW ALONG WITH ONE OF THE PROGRAM'S BUILDING DOCTORS, AS SHE VISITS HOMEOWNERS IN NEED OF SOME GUIDANCE.
>> THE BUILDING DOCTOR PROGRAM IS A PROGRAM AT THE OHIO HISTORY CONNECTION THAT WAS DESIGNED TO GIVE PROPERTY OWNERS OF OLDER BUILDINGS ADVICE THAT'S GROUNDED IN THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR STANDARDS FOR REHABILITATION.
WHAT I LIKE TO TELL FOLK THAT IS THE BUILDING DOCTORS HAVE NOTHING TO SELL BUT GOOD ADVICE.

WALKING INTO THIS SPACE AND SEEING ALL OF THE WINDOWS AND THE WOOD, THAT MADE US FALL IN LOVE WITH IT.

WE HAVE DIFFERENT SAMPLES HERE WE'RE TRYING TO FIGURE OUT, HOW DO WE WANT TO DO IT?
>> A LITTLE ADVICE ABOUT, FIRST OF ALL, WE'LL GO WITH A STAIN.
THERE IS NOT A THING WRONG WITH A DARK STAIN, IT'S JUST GOING TO DARKEN UP THE ROOM FOR YOU A LITTLE BIT.
AS FAR AS THE FLOOR, THE THINGS THAT FOLKS NEED TO REMEMBER ABOUT FLOORS, FLOORS HAVE A LIMITED THICKNESS.
SO THEY'RE THREE QUARTERS TO AN INCH AND A HALF THICK AND THEY DON'T REPLENISH THEMSELVES OVERNIGHT.
EVERY TIME YOU SAND A FLOOR, A LITTLE BIT MORE FLOORING SURFACE IS COMING OFF.
SO WHAT WE SUGGEST, WHAT WE RECOMMEND IS YOU'VE JUST HAD THESE FLOORS DONE NOW.
KEEP AN EYE ON THEM, AND RIGHT BEFORE THEY NEED TO BE DONE AGAIN, SCREEN THEM, WHICH IS A VERY LIGHT SANDING, AND THEN PUT YOUR SURFACE COAT BACK ON.
WHAT THAT ALLOWS YOU TO DO IS NOT HAVE TO AGGRESSIVELY RESAND A FLOOR AGAIN.
THE OTHER THING THAT'S IMPORTANT IN ANY OF THESE JOBS THAT YOU'RE DOING, WHETHER IT'S REMOVING PAINT OR REDOING THE FLOOR IS YOU WANT TO PROTECT YOURSELF.
YOU WANT TO WEAR A RESPIRATOR, PROTECT YOUR SKIN, BECAUSE THINGS CAN BE ABSORBED THROUGH YOUR SKIN, AND TURN OFF THE BRAND-NEW HVAC SYSTEM THAT YOU JUST INSTALLED.
MAKE SURE THAT'S ALL TURNED OFF AND COVER THOSE GRATES AND AREAS, BECAUSE THAT WILL KEEP THE DUST FROM CIRCULATING THEN THROUGH THE SYSTEM AND THROUGH THE HOUSE.
>> WHEN WE BOUGHT THIS PLACE, THESE FLOORS WERE ALREADY JUST PLAIN WOOD.
SO WHEN WE CAME IN, WE SAID, OH, WE WERE GOING TO REFINISH THESE, BRING THEM BACK, MAKE THEM REALLY BEAUTIFUL, BUT WE DIDN'T KNOW THAT THE KITCHEN FLOOR WAS GOING TO TURN OUT SO GOOD.

AND I NOTICE, TOO, THIS WOODWORK APPEARS TO HAVE BEEN PAINTED.

WE TRIED A LOT OF DIFFERENT METHODS TO GET IT OFF.
>> SO THIS DOOR LOOKED LIKE THIS DOOR.
>> SO I THINK THIS IS AFTER, I THINK, TWO OR THREE LAYERS OF PAINT REMOVAL ALREADY.
THE MOST EFFECTIVE THING WE FOUND WAS CARBIDE SCRAPERS, WHICH WORKED REALLY WELL AND DON'T LOSE THEIR EDGE AS WELL AS NORMAL STEEL SCRAPERS.
>> YOU KNOW, I THINK THAT REALLY WAS A SMART OPTION.

AND A LITTLE TRICK THAT I LEARNED MANY YEARS AGO IS THAT ONCE YOU CREATE THAT POSITIVE GRADE, YOU COULD, IF YOU WANTED TO, PUT A LAYER OF PLASTIC UP THAT SHEETS A LITTLE BIT UP THE FOUNDATION AND MAYBE PUT A LAYER OF RIVER ROCK, WHICH CAN BE REALLY PRETTY, SO THAT IF THERE REALLY IS A HEAVY RAIN AND THE WATER COMES DOWN AND HITS THIS PLASTIC AND YOU'VE ALREADY CREATED A POSITIVE GRADE OUT, THERE IS NO WAY IT WILL BE ABLE TO GET INTO YOUR BASEMENT AND POSSIBLY WILL HELP WITH THE DAMPNESS ISSUES AND THE POOLING WATER ISSUES THAT YOU'VE SAID YOU'VE EXPERIENCED IN THE PAST.

ONE CURIOUS VIEWER WROTE IN TO ASK, WHAT DO WE KNOW ABOUT THE FIRST AFRICAN-AMERICAN GRADUATE WELL, IT JUST SO HAPPENS THAT 2022 MARKET THE 130th ANNIVERSARY OF THE FIRST BLACK STUDENT TO GRADUATE FROM OSU.
HIS NAME WAS SHERMAN HAMLIN GUS AND GRADUATED IN 1892.
GUS WAS PART OF THE FIRST GENERATION OF AFRICAN-AMERICANS BORN AFTER THE CIVIL WAR.
MANY OF THEM HAD NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR EDUCATION THAT THEIR PARENTS NEVER HAD.
GUS TOOK FULL ADVANTAGE OF THOSE OPPORTUNITIES AND WOULD GO ON TO BECOME A PIONEER IN THE FIELD OF EDUCATION.
HE STARTED LIFE IN MIDDLEPORT, OHIO, A SMALL TOWN ON THE BANKS OF THE OHIO RIVER.
THE AREA WAS HOME TO A COMMUNITY OF WORKING CLASS BLACK FAMILIES DRAWN IN BY THE SALT AND COAL MINING INDUSTRIES.
GUS LIKELY ATTENDED A BLACK PRIMARY SCHOOL, BUT GRADUATED WITH HONORS FROM A WHITE SCHOOL.
HE AND ANOTHER WERE THE FIRST NON-WHITE STUDENTS TO GRADUATE IN MIDDLEPORT HIGH SCHOOL.
WHEN SHERMAN GUS ARRIVED ON CAMPUS, OHIO STATE WAS A QUAINT LAND GRANT UNIVERSITY WITH A HANDFUL OF BUILDINGS ON THE OUTSKIRTS OF COLUMBUS.
GUS WAS ONE OF 70 FRESHMAN UNDERGRADUATES ADMITTED IN 1888.
FOR COMPARISON, THE FRESHMAN CLASS THESE DAYS IS WELL OVER 8,000 STUDENTS, WHILE GUS LIKELY FACED MANY CHALLENGES DUE TO HIS RACE, THE AVAILABLE ARCHIVAL EVIDENCE SHOWS THAT HE HAD A POSITIVE EXPERIENCE ON CAMPUS.
AS A STUDENT IN THE BACHELOR OF ARTS PROGRAM, GUS TOOK COURSES IN LATIN, GREEK, ENGLISH, MATH, AND CHEMISTRY.
OUTSIDE OF CLASS, HE WAS AN ACTIVE MEMBER OF ONE OF THE SCHOOL'S LITERARY SOCIETIES.
THE STUDENT DIRECTORY INDICATES THAT GUS LIVED IN THE HISTORICALLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN NEIGHBORHOOD KNOWN AS BRONZEVILLE.
TODAY IT'S CALLED KING LINCOLN BRONZEVILLE.
YOU MIGHT THINK THAT GUS WAS FORCED TO LIVE OFF-CAMPUS BECAUSE OF HIS RACE, BUT THAT DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE THE CASE.
FREDERICK DOUGLAS PATTERSON, ANOTHER BLACK STUDENT AND THE FIRST BLACK OSU FOOTBALL PLAYER IS LISTED AS LIVING ON-CAMPUS IN THE NORTHERN DORMITORY AT THAT SAME TIME.
IN LATER YEARS, AS SEGREGATION BECAME MORE THE NORM, OHIO STATE WAS NOT IMMUNE TO INSTITUTIONAL BIGOTRY.
OSU TRACK STAR AND OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALLIST JESSE OWENS WAS BARRED FROM LIVING ON CAMPUS IN THE 1930s, FOR EXAMPLE.
IN 1892, GUS WAS ONE OF JUST SIX STUDENTS TO GRADUATE WITH THEIR BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE.
IT'S HARD TO KNOW IF HE ENCOUNTERED RACISM WHILE ATTENDING OSU, BUT IF HE DID, IT DID NOT SOUR HIM ON THE INSTITUTION.
HE JOINED THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION AND ATTENDED SEVERAL CLASS REUNIONS OVER HIS LIFETIME.
AFTER GRADUATION, GUS HEADED TO WEST VIRGINIA WHERE HE WOULD DEDICATE THE REST OF HIS PROFESSIONAL LIFE TO EDUCATION.
HE WAS A TEACHER AND A SCHOOL PRINCIPAL WHEN HIGH SCHOOL EDUCATION IN THE STATE WAS RARE.
IN 1904, HE JOINED THE FACULTY OF THE WEST VIRGINIA COLORED INSTITUTE, A LAND GRANT COLLEGE CREATED FOR AFRICAN-AMERICANS IN THE 1890s.
TODAY, THAT SCHOOL IS KNOWN AS WEST VIRGINIA STATE UNIVERSITY.
SHERMAN HAMLIN GUS PASSED AWAY IN 1943 AFTER NEARLY 40 YEARS AS A PART OF THAT COLLEGE COMMUNITY, LEAVING THE LEGACY AS A PIONEER IN EDUCATION.
