Gov. Glenn Youngkin is set to release guidelines in September regarding cell phone use in schools. Currently the Commonwealth doesn’t have statewide guidelines governing cell phone use in schools. Educators and parents recently met in Chesterfield in the last of nine town hall meetings.

BILLY SHIELDS: The state's education department held the last of nine town hall meetings in Chesterfield County Tuesday night to shape Virginia's policy on cell phones in school.
Dozens gathered to tackle a question affecting education across the state: What should be done about students and cell phones?
Opinions seem sharply divided.
Some point out theyre a necessary lifeline for emergencies.
Others say they're destroying attention spans, interpersonal skills and contributing to learning loss.
Ryan Abbott teaches social studies at Cosby High.
He wants phones out of classrooms.
RYAN ABBOTT: They're just not used to concentrating attention on something.
And so that's been a real adjustment for, I think, any teacher.
Now, how do you win that attention when there are so many other things that they could be doing?
BILLY SHIELDS: The state's government is set to announce the new school cell phone guidelines next month, with districts implementing them at the start of 2025.
