Larger than life, the work of Miles "Mac" MacGregor uses the streets.
Larger than life, the work of Miles "Mac" MacGregor uses the streets as a way to continue the tradition of portraiture. Born in Los Angeles, the self-trained artist focuses on subjects that celebrate and reflect the cultural history of the southwest. Introduced to graffiti and tagging as a teenager, it was the materials and process involved in spray painting that captivated the budding artist.

SURE.
WHEN THEY HAD THE CARAVAN FOR PEACE, I TOOK PHOTOS OF THE MEMBERS OF THE CARAVAN, PEOPLE WHO HAD LOST LOVED ONES TO VIOLENCE.
I REALLY WANTED TO PAINT THESE PEOPLE.
IT IS A NEW YEAR.
THIS IS A BRAND-NEW PIECE OF ART.
MY GUESTS ARE MAX AND DAVE GRAVE HERRERA.
GOOD AFTERNOON.
WE ARE JOINED BY HERNANDEZ, THEY MADE THE MIRROR PROJECT POSSIBLE.
WE HAVE THE FORTUNE OF TALKING TO YOU AS YOU'RE WORKING ON THE MURAL.
IT WILL BE UP EMBRACING OUR DOWNTOWN.
CAN YOU GIVE US SOME BACKGROUND ABOUT THE MEDIUM?
AND WHAT IT IS YOUR GRAFFITI ART , HOW YOU STARTED.
I KNOW YOU HAVE BEEN FRIENDS FOR A WILD.
TAKE US THROUGH.
I HAVE A HISTORY OF BEING A REGULAR PERSON, HUMBLE PEOPLE, THOSE REGULAR FOLKS, WORKERS.
THAT IS SOMETHING THAT IS GROWING UP IN THE SOUTHWEST.
I GREW UP IN PHOENIX.
I SPENT SOME TIME THERE.
THERE IS SOMETHING THAT I ALWAYS THOUGHT WAS SEEING IN MY LIFE, THAT I WASN'T SEEING REPRESENTED IN OUR VERY MUCH.
I FELT LIKE IT WAS SOMETHING WORTHWHILE TO PRETRADE.
I FELT EVEN MORE LIKE A SENSE OF URGENCY OR MOTIVATION TO REPRESENT OR PAY HOMAGE TO THESE REGULAR PEOPLE OF THE SOUTHWEST.
BECAUSE OF THE BORDER ISSUES AND CONFLICTS, AND JUSTICE AND KILLINGS, THINGS HAVE -- THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF CHANGES FOR THE WORST.
MAYBE IN RECENT YEARS IT HAS GOTTEN BETTER.
AT SOME POCKET -- AT SOME POINT A FEW YEARS BACK I WAS LOOKING AT STATISTICS.
I REMEMBER SEEING THE NUMBER OF BORDER DEATHS, MIGRANTS DYING FROM CROSSING THROUGH THE DESERTS WAS HIGHER THAN THE DEATH TOLL IN IRAQ YEARLY.
AT LEAST ON THE U.S.
SIDE.
THIS WAS KIND OF A MAJOR CRISIS.
MORE AND MORE I FELT LIKE AS A RESIDENT OF THE SOUTHWEST, SOMEONE WHO GREW UP IN THE SOUTHWEST, IT SEEMED LIKE I FELT A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY TO PAY
