(upbeat music) - Epilepsy Foundation of Utah's 2024 Epilepsy Walk is a family friendly community event to raise funds in support of people living with epilepsy.
And Dr. Carey Wilson, a board member, is here with more information about this year's event.
Hello there.
Thank you for being back.
So tell me first about the event at Wheeler Farm.
- Yeah, it's gonna be a really wonderful community event.
We're excited to just bring everyone together, an outside at Wheeler Historic Farm.
It's family friendly, so we're hoping that it brings everyone either who has epilepsy or cares for someone with epilepsy together as a community, but also raising awareness about the disease.
- Which is a lot of what you do.
I know what 30,000 people in Utah live with epilepsy?
- Yes.
More than you might think.
- Yeah.
Yeah.
And talk about some of the services you provide them and their families.
- So since epilepsy can look so different and affects everyone of every age, we offer education.
We offer seizure first aid.
We even have an upcoming kids camp for children with epilepsy.
So we're really trying to get everyone together.
And you might even meet someone at the walk that you've seen on Zoom support meetings that we offer.
So we're really trying to bring everyone together to fight this disease.
- Yeah, 'cause I know those support groups are really important and- - Definitely.
- And also, I think it's important that you go into the schools to teach what epilepsy looks like.
- We do.
That's been a huge initiative to get into the schools, but we're also expanding out into first responders who might be the first people on the scene.
And so really improving awareness of what a seizure looks like and what to do if someone is having one helps keep those with epilepsy safe.
- Boy.
No kidding.
Because I mean, as you've said before, it looks different in different people.
- It does.
- So they might not even realize that the person having problems is having an epileptic episode.
- Yes, that's happened in some of our school trainings where a teacher had no idea that what the child was doing was a seizure.
And so I think it's helping a lot of people out there.
- Well, you do great work.
Thank you.
- Thank you.
- And if you'd like to know more about that upcoming Family Friendly Community event for the Epilepsy Foundation of Utah, it's their 2024 Walk.
June 15th at 5:30 PM at Wheeler Historic Farm.
