♪ They're gathering near the Gateway Arch here in St. Louis, Missouri: the Gateway to the West, and the strategic starting point for all of our teams.
♪ They'll all walk away with newfound family, but only one will win the $50,000 and become our new champion.
And with clouds coming in on the horizon, anything can happen.
Welcome to season five of Relative Race!
It's time to meet our teams.
♪ Maria: Hi, I'm Maria Clifton.
- I'm Lizzie Clifton.
Both: We're from New York City, and we are Team Red.
♪ - The other contestants are going to love us.
Elizabeth: I think they're gonna be intimidated.
Maria: They better be!
[laughter] - I can't!
- I'm just kidding, guys, we're sweet.
We're really nice.
- I can't.
- We're from New York City!
What gives us an advantage in this game is our competitive nature, maybe?
♪ - Our wits?
- Our athletic nature, okay?
Elizabeth: Athleticism, I would say so, yeah.
Maria: I would say.
We're pretty well covered in all areas.
Elizabeth: Our creativity.
- Yes.
- Yeah.
♪ Elizabeth: We're sisters through adoption.
Although we're not biologically related, our story started in the same place.
Maria: Our mother started off working in a convent as a social worker, and ended up with us two.
I want to be on this show to find my birth parents.
I've always wanted to know who I looked like.
At the end of this experience, I've hoped that I'ved gained a little bit more understanding about maybe personal things about myself that I didn't know.
- I really wanted to meet my birth mother, and I've met her.
So that part of me is satisfied.
The one person that I am slightly nervous about meeting would probably be my biological father.
Maria: We're super excited about going on this adventure.
We're calling it our gratitude tour, because we just want to thank our birth parents and the people in their lives that could have made this possible to give us a better life.
But when it comes to competitiveness, you better move over, and you better watch out.
You better watch your back, okay?
This fiery red stands for something.
♪ - Hey, I'm Kaley.
- I'm Kristen.
Kaley: We're identical twins.
Kristen: We're 24 years old.
- From Orlando, Florida.
Both: And we're Team Black.
Kaley: We are both musicians.
I currently sing at Disney.
Kristen: And I work at a hospital as a certified medical assistant.
It's really cool being a twin.
We have like the same...
Both: Everything.
- Me.
- I was the fi-- Uh-uh.
- Kaley.
- She's more bossy.
♪ Kristen: A pet peeve of mine that I have of Kaley is when she always just, uh, she always pulls her hair.
- She has this blank stare face.
And it's so annoying.
♪ Kristen: When we were four, our dad left us.
He just walked out.
Our mom had to raise three kids on her own.
- We just want closure.
When our dad left, we really took on music as a lifestyle.
So we started writing more, we started releasing our feelings through songs.
♪ But I'm so good now.
♪ Both: ♪ Than I was back then.
♪ Kristen: Even if we don't meet him, we want to meet people who can tell us about him.
Kaley: Yeah.
We really want to meet our dad's siblings and all of their children.
His family.
This is just one step closer of knowing that he's okay and that he knows that we love him despite what's happened.
♪ - I'm Demetrius Flowers.
- I'm Chonta Flowers.
We're from Atlanta, Georgia.
Both: And we are Team Blue.
- We are competitive.
- Big time.
Demetrius: And... Chonta: We're into fitness.
♪ I'm an online health and wellness consultant.
Demetrius: I work in federal law enforcement as a special agent, but my favorite job is being a dad to my eight-year-old son, Chance.
Chance is my entire world.
I'm probably over-involved.
Let's go!
I coach Chance's Little League football team.
All the way through!
For the past five years.
That's what I'm talking about!
- We met in the United States Marine Corps.
♪ Demetrius: During our time in the Marine Corps, we both worked in supply.
I worked in the warehouse, and she-- Chonta: I worked in the office.
The smart job.
- [laughs] 10 years ago, we got married, and-- Chonta: We never had a wedding or a honeymoon, so when we win Relative Race and we pocket that 50 grand, this one is taking me to Bora Bora.
The fact that we are Marines and we've actually gone through Basic Training, and we have done 13 weeks of hard, grueling challenges, it has set us up to be ready for anything.
I grew up in a great family here in Georgia.
My mom and dad were married for 32 years until my dad died.
And so my story's very different from my husband.
- I grew up in Chicago with an amazing mom and four siblings.
But, my mom never discussed who my dad was.
My mom was 17 when she had me, and so I want my son to know who his grandparents are.
That side of myself.
And I want him and I to be able to share that together.
♪ - I'm Keith Breedlove.
- I'm Marcus Taylor.
- We're brothers from Los Angeles.
Both: And we're Team Green.
Keith: I'm a full-time father, I work at a hotel in downtown Los Angeles.
I like gymnastics, playing most sports.
- I dance for a living.
Break dancer, contortionist.
Do a lot of various styles of dancing.
We street perform almost every day, I'm street performing.
I took the initiative to go to L.A.
I had like $17, I took the bus and train out there.
Anywhere I can get my foot in the door, I was just up and out.
♪ I definitely had a lot of hardships in life from being homeless, abuse, over 10 foster homes, neglecte.
Keith: We're basically half-brothers.
We have the same mother but different dads.
- When I was about five or six, my mom passed away the day before Mother's Day.
Keith: I can remember it like it was yesterday, because I was at school making her a Mother's Day card.
And that's basically how I remember it, because she never got it.
Of course it was heartbreaking.
Nobody ever wants to hear that they've lost a loved one, let alone a mother or a father.
We're on the show to help my brother find his biological father.
- I really don't know who my father is.
I don't know his name, I don't know his ethnicity.
I don't know anything.
Being raised in the foster system, you always wonder who your family is.
So I'm excited to be on this show 'cause I really feel like I would know a whole lot more if I had a father.
♪ Dan: Are you guys ready for this?
- We're ready!
- Yes!
Dan: All right.
Over the next 10 days, you're gonna follow clues, paper maps, and your own instincts to try to find family members faster than your competitors.
Maria: We're competitors.
Game on, people!
♪ Dan: You'll all be driving identical cars matching your team colors.
Inside the cars are your backpacks.
Inside those backpacks are your paper maps and the infamous flip phones.
Those phones have no GPS or Internet access.
You know what that means.
It's now time to lose your smartphones.
They're gone.
For the next 10 days, your tether to technology is gone.
- Giving up my phone was so hard.
Marcus: When I gave up my phone, it was like giving a piece of my life away.
♪ Dan: Each day, each of you will be given a different allotted time.
The team that goes over their allotted time the most each day will receive a strike.
Three strikes, and you're out of the race.
♪ Dan: You want to know what that first place prize is today?
All: Yes!
Dan: Okay.
It's a choice of either a five-minute penalty that you can give to one of the other teams tomorrow, or that Day 10 benefit.
Teams, are you ready to hit the road?
[cheering] - Let's do it!
- We do have one problem, though.
♪ Dan: For the first time ever, one of our teams does not have drivers' licenses.
♪ - Them New Yorkers!
- Them New-- No!
- Please.
Dan says there's a team that doesn't have a license, and my jaw drops.
- Team Red.
Do you have your drivers' licenses?
- The past five days, yes.
I've had my license.
- Yes.
Dan: Team Green, do you have your licenses?
- Well, actually, Dan, we don't.
♪ We've lived in California all of our lives, and found it pretty easy to get around on public transportation.
- I'm thinking they're out of the competition.
- Done.
- Marcus and Keith, will you please step forward?
Elizabeth: When Dan asked them to step forward, I was sure.
We're like, yes, one team down!
- Getting disqualified, yes.
I looked at her and said-- - Yes.
- Oh.
Two to go.
- She's like, they're out.
- One down, two to go.
♪ - We've thought about this for a long time, and we simply cannot let you drive without your licenses.
- How are you even gonna do this?
Like, how are you even gonna complete the challenge?
Like, you're out.
- I'm so confused.
Dan: But since this show is about finding family, we've decided to bring a driver in for you.
♪ - That is not fair.
- I don't like that.
- Hey, Dan.
- How you doing?
Now let me be clear.
There are rules for this driver.
He cannot look at the map at any time.
- You get tired on the road and you're driving and you have to pay attention.
So we think it's a little unfair.
Dan: He cannot help you in any way.
In fact, he cannot make a turn or do anything unless you two tell him.
- I'm thinking to myself, wait, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
That's not fair.
- If he does, you two will automatically earn a strike on the spot.
Is that clear?
All right, go ahead, meet your team.
- Hey guys, happy to be your driver.
- Are you my cousin?
- Especially you, Marcus.
- Nice to meet you.
[cheering] - Yay!
Oh, that's so cool!
Yes!
Oh my goodness, yes!
I'm so happy for you guys.
Marcus: I don't even know what to say right now.
[indistinct] Maria: Yay, oh, that's so, yay.
- I've been waiting.
I've known three months.
I've been waiting.
Couldn't wait.
[clapping] - It is nice to meet you.
- Thank you, Dan.
- My name is Bishop Higgins, and I am Marcus' father.
To see Marcus for the first time in person was amazing.
I've seen, he looks just like me.
A mini-me.
- I met my dad.
That is crazy.
Like, I-I don't know what to say.
I'm still in shock.
I'm, like, I'm just tangled with, I don't know what to say, like...
He hugged me for like a good 30-something seconds and like the whole time in my mind, I'm just like thinking, this cannot be real.
♪ Bishop: I was overjoyed for the first time I hugged him.
We connected, there's that bond.
It's like we've known or like I've known him all his life.
Demetrius: It's real in that moment, you know?
Like, this just got really serious.
Chonta: Relative Race is real.
- Immediately, tears.
Emotion.
I'm so overwhelmed and happy for Marcus.
And to be honest, I'm okay with his dad driving him.
Maria: That was so awesome.
Elizabeth: It really put in perspective what the show is about, and it made me think to myself, whatever preconceptions we had about this show, they all went out the window.
Marcus: And I just felt pure love and like it was meant to happe, like it was real.
It was real love energy.
Just love, like... That's all I felt.
Kristen: You don't know what to expect on this race, but when you see it in person, it's just different.
You're just feeling everybody's, you know, love and compassion towards each other.
Bishop: I'm just glad that we can come together and he has closure for that and we're here for him and the healing can begin.
- It's a life-changing moment for the rest of my life for sure.
Like, I found my dad, you know?
♪ - I think we just found out that Relative Race is real.
And I think all of us are now excited to see a father and a son take a road trip of a lifetime.

All: Yes!
[upbeat music] ♪ Dan: Okay.
Before you can go, you're gonna need the keys to your car.
But you've got to earn these keys through a series of challenges.
♪ Your first challenge is called the Arena.
One player from each team will be inside the Arena.
Your goal is to throw paintbals at the other members inside the Arena.
Break a paintball on another member inside the Arena, they're out.
The person inside the Arena is blindfolded.
Your teammate must give you guided directions to the paintballs and to where all of the other opponents are.
Be the last one standing, you get the keys, and you get the head start.
You can only throw one paintball at a time.
If you throw more than one, you're out.
Marcus: Right off the jump, I thought, ah, this is gonna be super hard.
- Enter the Arena.
Put your goggles down, please.
Elizabeth: When I put on the goggles, I realized that I really could not see a thing.
- The Arena is going to start in three, two, one, go!
Chonta: Go!
Throw it- throw it straight, babe.
- Duck!
Kristen, duck, duck.
Duck.
- I'm directing him.
I'm telling him, move left, move right.
Right, right!
Maria: Straight in front of yo, straight in front of you!
Chonta: Trying to get him right over there so he can actually knock somebody out.
Maria: Duck!
Yeah, straight.
Duck!
Dan: Hold it, hold it, time up!
Red Team is out.
- And he knocks out Red Team.
Elizabeth: Yeah, I felt that one.
Kaley: Our biggest threat went out first, which was super surprising.
Chonta: Behind you!
Keith: He's right there!
Chonta: Move, you're in front of him!
We're trying to go to the next person.
To the left, down, dow-- Ah!
- I'm like, you've got to be kidding me.
- Team Blue is out!
- We definitely saw that they get frustrated easily.
♪ Keith: Okay, it's down to two of us and I see that she has this bucket over her head.
My brother hit her, you know, a couple of times, but she was blocked by the bucket.
She's under a bucket!
Bro, she's hiding under a bucket, bro!
Is that legal?
- She uses a shield like a superhero.
Kaley: So you're gonna go straight to the middle.
Keith: Straight ahead, straight ahead.
Kaley: The balls are in the middle, Kristen.
Keith: That bucket is full of balls.
Marcus: We're both in the middle at the bucket.
We're both throwing it at each other.
Kaley: Straight in front of you, go!
[cheering] - She hits me in the face, boom.
- Broken ball, broken ball!
Hold!
- And then Dan stops the clock.
- I saw Team Black pick up and throw multiple balls.
I'm sorry, Team Black, you're out.
Team Green, you are the last ones standing, you win the challenge.
Come get your keys.
Kristen: I'm pretty upset, because my adrenaline just kicked in and I picked up three balls and they only won 'cause I-- - Cheated.
- Come on, brother, let's go.
We get our keys from Dan, we sprint to the car.
- Let's see where we're going.
Keith: It says, "Your first destination is Arlington, Texas."
- Now I can spend time with my brother and my dad.
I was gonna see what the rest of the day has in store.
- I can't believe we lost this challenge.
- I know.
- We should literally be on the road right now.
- I don't wanna look.
Dan: Team Green is off.
Three teams remain.
Follow me to our next challeng.
Maria: Just get us to the next challenge so we can win this.
- Let's go!
♪ Demetrius: We were really disappointed for not winning the first challenge.
- Losing the first challenge was hard on us.
- Welcome to Trigantic Volley.
Kaley: We were a little nervous when we saw this, because we know that our other opponents are taller.
Dan: If you hit it into opposing team's court and it either hits the ground or they hit it out, they will be eliminated.
- I'm looking at that thing like, there is no way.
Dan: The winner gets the keys to the car and gets another head start.
Are you ready?
[all agreeing] Elizabeth: I definitely feel super confident.
- Yes.
- I'm a former volleyball player.
- Yep.
- We'll start on go.
Three, two, one, go!
♪ - Go!
♪ - Go, go, Kristen!
[whistle] Dan: Team Black has been eliminated.
Elizabeth: We are going after Team Black because they look less athletic than the Blue Team.
Kristen: And we're bummed, but we're hoping that we can dominate the next challenge.
Dan: There are two teams left.
Chonta: That's it.
It's over now.
- We got this.
Dan: Trigantic Volley is on again in three, two, one, go!
♪ - Got you, hit it back, I got you.
- Bring it this way.
- Here we go.
Here we go.
- Bring it this way, got it.
Ooh!
Dan: Out!
Team Blue, you are our winner.
Come get your keys.
Good luck finding your relatives.
Good luck.
- Hey, thanks.
Here we go, here we go!
- Let me see, open it up, open it up!
- [indistinct] Your first destination is Cartersville, Georgia?
What?
Demetrius: Are you kidding?
Chonta: What?
- All right, well.
Dan: Team Red, ladies.
One of you will receive a head start if you can win the next challenge.
Are you ready?
- Let's do it.
- Okay, let's go.
[intense music] ♪ Kaley: How did we go from almot winning challenge one to being here right now?
- Mm-hmm.
- Welcome to Dunk and the Trunk.
One player from each team will be perched above the dunk tank while the opposing player from each team tries to hit the target, plunging the player into the water.
Maria: I got a good arm.
I felt confident.
- Baseball and softball, we've never played any of those sports.
- Both teams are going to be throwing rapid fire.
Once a player is dunked, we'll stop, switch everybody out, and start again.
Once we have a winner, come to me, get your keys, and you're off.
Please get to the tanks.
- This water's pretty cold on my feet.
I can't imagine what my whole body would feel like if it were submerged.
Dan: Dunk and the Trunk.
Start in three, two, one... go.
- Oh Kristen, you're gonna miss, you're gonna miss!
[splashes] Dan: Wow!
- I love you, sister!
Dan: That was impressive.
- I mean, I did play a little softball, Dan.
- Great.
Maria played softball.
Dan: We're gonna change sides.
Let's hope that your teammates have a great arm.
- Yeah, you better!
You're gonna nail this, Elizabeth!
[indistinct] - In three, two, one, go!
- Go Lizzie, go, Lizzie, go!
Go, Lizzie, go!
[cheering] - Go Kaley!
- Yes!
- Wow.
- I don't even know how she did it on the first throw.
- I know.
- How's that for not playing softball, Maria?
- Good job!
- What a sudden turn of events!
That was amazing.
We're going to sudden death.
- Whoo!
♪ Dan: In three, two, one, go!
- Come on.
Dan: But not hard enough.
Kristen: You're good, you got this.
[splashes] - Yes!
Dan: Team Red is our winner of Dunk and the Trunk.
- We won!
Maria: I feel like I have a new wind about me.
- Come get your keys.
Come get your clothes, change, and get on the open road.
And remember, your clocks are still running.
Team Black.
You didn't win the challenge.
You need to run to that yellow table and get your clothes from the trunk.
You're on the clock.
You better get going.
- Where are we going?
First destination, Nashville, Tennessee!
- Yes!
Let's go, come on!
♪ Kristen: We grab our dry clothes, we change, and we head straight to the car, knowing full well that the other teams already have a huge head start.
Kristen: Your first destination is Davie, Florida.
What?
♪ Maria: I'm so confused.
Literally coming out of the gate was just a little confusing at first.
We're gonna make a right up here.
- Oh, is that what the map said?
Keith: So we see this lady and we ask her, how do we get to Texas?
And she tells us all we have to do is follow the signs to Arkansa.
Where are we going?
- Ar-kan-sas?
- Arkansas.
- I don't see Arkansas.
I see Little Rock in Ar-kan-sas.
That's all I see.
I'm definitely gonna navigate really well.
I'm trying to understand, is Arkansas the same as Ar-kan-sas, or what?
- No.
- We're driving for maybe a minute and... Kaley: Oh, I'm sorry.
- You run a red light!
Are you kidding me?
- No.
- You got the right driver behind the wheel.
- We found the freeway pretty quick.
- That's exactly the way we want to go.
Kristen: Stay in the right lane and merge.
Put your blinker on!
- I'm not merging yet!
Kristen: Please!
♪ - Nothing says Arkansas.
Keith: I'm telling you, brother.
Bishop: I almost wanted to cry.
I knew where we were and they didn't.
Marcus: He can't tell unless we tell him to, and if he does, we get a strike.
- The light changed, which way do we go, guys?
- Left.
- No, straight, you can't go left.
- Oh, straight, I'm sorry.
Keith: You can't go left.
When you get a chance, make a left turn.
- We were going around in circles.
I almost wanted to stop, jump out of the car, and just get some air.
Keith: To navigate with another passenger is gonna be pretty tough.
- It was like a handicap in a way.
- Brother, brother, I found Little Rock, brother.
But we'll make the best of it.
- Yeah, we're making the best of it.
So there we go, right there, 55 South, baby, let's go!
Dan: All four teams have finaly found their way out of St. Lous and are racing towards their destinations.
However, because of the longer distances in the first leg of the race, each of our teams will be given two travel days to reach their relatives.
Maria: Super RoboCop!
- RoboCop!
- Demetrius, I'm calling you RoboCop from here on out, bro.
Dan: The sisters on Team Red will be looking for Nashville, Tennessee, and they have an allotted time of 4 hours and 37 minutes.
- But I don't think Team Green is gonna make it to Day 10.
- Oh.
- Did you get that?
Dan: Team Blue will be traveling to find Cartersville, Georgia.
Their allotted time is 7 hours and 32 minutes.
- It's hard for me not to say things when you guys don't see where the turns are.
Dan: Team Green will be traveling to Arlington, Texas, and have an allotted time of 10 hours and 19 minutes.
- Honk for Team Black.
Relative Race.
[honking] - Whoo!
Dan: And finally, Team Black will be traveling all the way to Davie, Florida, with an allotted time of 17 hours and 11 minutes.
As everyone hits the open road, Marcus on Team Green finally gets the opportunity to connect with his father for the very first time.
Marcus: So Dad, we definitely gotta catch up, man.
This is crazy.
Like, I want to know anything and everything.
- Whew.
Marcus: Being in the car with my dad, it definitely is a wonderful experience to get to know him.
Bishop: Well, I'm a little bit sad.
I had no idea that I had another child that existed.
If we would have known, if we wouldn't have went through none of that, ever, you wouldn't have even been awy from your other siblings.
We would have taken all you guys.
Bishop: Man, all you guys would have come with him.
It's been an amazing day.
- Man, I'm all emotional still.
- Oh, man.
Marcus: I didn't have this high of expectations, honestly.
Like, this blew me away.
This is like realer than real.
This is crazy, like literally a dream come true.
So Dad, do you have any other kids?
- I have one other son.
- Oh, I got a brother?
- You have a brother.
You have a big brother.
- That's crazy.
I can't wait to meet him.
One of my biggest concerns was like, what if my family doesn't like me, or, you know, stuff like that.
So it was definitely a big surprise at how happy my dad was to see me.
He just couldn't stop smiling.
- You got your dad back now.
- I know.
That's cool.
I gotta come visit you in Vegas.
- You're gonna have a room in my house.
Whenever you want to be there, you can be there.
- My own room?
- Your own room.
- Oh, yeah.
We were just getting to know each other a whole lot.
He's already very supportive of what I do.
It's crazy.
Bishop: I can't compare any other time of my life to now.
It means everything.
It means everything.
I'm ready to take him home.
It means everything.
This counts as the best day of my life.
- This is the best day of my life too.
Most definitely.
- I would have to agree.
- Best day of my life.
- The best day of my life.
[clock ticking] Dan: While Team Green gets familiar with Marcus' father, Team Black decides to get familiar with their competitio.
- Sometimes, we love a little bit of a friendly competition.
- Okay, so, yeah.
Let's text Team Red.
Elizabeth: Hope your five day license is doing you well... Ha ha ha.
[cat noises] - Got 'em!
- I'm not done typing.
- Green Team.
- How does it feel to get a chauffeur and relax all day?
- That's good.
- #DidYouSweat?
- Yeah, did you realize you're going the wrong way?
- Ain't no sweat.
What?
Keith: Wouldn't it be funny if they actually believed our text?
- He's just playing with us.
Don't believe him!
- I know, but what?
No we're not.
Dan: After two grueling days in the car, all of our teams are approaching their destination cities.
- Look for signs.
Does anything over there say Nashville?
Dan: Ready to find a city sign and snap a selfie.
- Right there, BMW.
- Right there, bam, stop here, pull in here.
Turn right.
We end up running into a car lot that had the sign Arlington written on it, so it was perfect.
- Lexus of Nashville?
Will that work?
- Cartersville Medical Center.
- Perfect.
- Got the phone?
- Yes.
Let's go.
Elizabeth: Come on, New York parker.
Keith: [indistinct] Kristen: We run up to the sign that we're gonna take a city selfie with.
Davie, Davie, Davie, get it!
Okay.
But immediately off the bat, we're struggling.
- Get in, get in, get in.
Kristen: Okay, check, make sure we're in it and you can see Davie.
Nope.
- Right there.
- Make sure Nashville-- - Right there.
I'm trying to take this selfie, but this phone is ridiculous.
Elizabeth: Did you get it?
Maria: No, why-- Elizabeth: Maria, are you, all right.
My turn, you go, let's go.
Come on.
- It doesn't have a front camera, makes it a little more difficult, but if you know how to work the camera, it should be all right.
[camera shutters] ♪ - Check this out.
First one's in.
- Perfect.
- Okay, one, two.

Maria: After meeting my brother Adio, we sit down and I have so many questions.

So, what number are you out of the brothers and sisters?
- Two or three, depending on how you look at it.
I have a twin.
- You have a twin?
- Yes.
- Turns out, Adio is a twin!
- Oh my goodness.
I don't know, I'm just still trying to figure this all out.
But then Adio brings like this giant frame.
- It's a little bit older, but, uh... That's the whole list right there.
- Wait, who are all these people?
Elizabeth: They're all your siblings.
- These are all my siblings, and now they're all of your siblings.

What are their names?
- So we have Ray, Chike, that's me, Adio, Adana.
Maria: Then Adio starts listing off all my siblings, and it just made it a little bit more real that they also all are a part of me.
I haven't met everybody yet, I would love to at some point in time of course, but... Just being so happy took over.
Yeah.

So all of you guys have the same mom and dad?
- Yes.
- So our mother.
- Yes.
- Has all these kids?

So looking at the photo, at first I didn't even notice it, and then all of a sudden, I was like, is this a joke?

Maria: Everyone has a red shirt on.

Like, what are the chances?
- Yeah, why do you guys all have a red shirt on?
Adio: 10 years ago, I couldn't tell ya.
It's kind of crazy how that works out, huh?
To be honest, I didn't even bring these pictures having it in mind that oh, we're wearing red in these pictures, they're gonna be wearing red, you know.
It's all coincidence.
Just entirely.
- Just little signs left and right putting us on this path and knowing it's meant to be is crazy.
So like, seeing that just verifies that I know we're here, and I know we're here for a reason.
Like, timing is everything, and I know we're here for a reason.

[piano music] ♪ Chonta: After meeting my cousin Alexis, she drove us to a historical plantation to share some of our family history with me.
- Let me tell you a little bit about your history and how we're tied to each other.
This is Mary Eliza Kincaid.
Now, Mary Eliza was born a slave.
She's the matriarch of the family, and she's the link that ties us together.
- Really?
- Really, really.
Chonta: So she's showing me these pictures of like my great-great-great grandmother who was a slave.
And I'm like, this is my family.
This is my history.
Like look at these women.
It's an amazing connection.
That is crazy.
- Yes!
Yes, it is.
So, we're here.
- Oh my gosh.
That was just a really, really emotional moment for me.
She just filled in all the blanks and areas, and you start to feel pieces come together like a puzzle.
Demetrius: Oh, it's okay.
That's good, that's a great thing!
Chonta: We know each other, this is nuts.
And then, Alexis took us over to the slave quarters.
It's actually still on the property today.
Our whole family was there?
Alexis: Yeah.
This is one cabin, so this was maybe one family or multiple families.
Shawn: You can see where the kitchen might have been.
Chonta: And we see a slave quarter, and waterworks immediately, because it's believed that one of my ancestors was oe of the slaves that lived here.
- Our three times great grandmother Eliza, she actually was a restaurant owner.
So not only did she come up-- - Look at that.
- From slavery, but she made it as a black woman in the South after slavery.
Demetrius: To see that and who she's become really pulls at your heartstrings.
Alexis: It's a sombering experience, but I think at the same time, to me, it makes me go harder.
Because, you know-- - Oh, no, super.
The reflection that you have, I'm like, wow.
Alexis: Wow.
Chonta: Could you hear it?
You read it, but to see it.
Alexis: Yeah.
Chonta: It just blows my mind.
♪ Dan: Back in Texas, a dance battle is brewing for Team Green.
Marcus: So my uncle says he wants to battle me, so we're gonna have a dance off.
We go to this crazy park, and we end up battling each other.
Show me what you got, where you at?
♪ Edward: I wanted to show Marcus my dance moves, because I used to make those moves in the day.
♪ [cheering] Uh, uh.

Marcus: And he actually is pretty good.
You could tell he had some old school experience in popping.
- Oh yeah.
- He's all hitting and gliding around and stuff.
It was really cool.
And then my cousin, his son, comes in doing the same thing.
I'm like, oh, I'm battling two people today.

♪ Marcus: But it runs in the family, like I can definitely see it's all in my family.
It's crazy.

Do you know anything about our dad?
Jonathan: I don't know much really.
I asked my mom, but she said that after they were all 18, around that age, that he kind of just fell off the face of the earth and they never heard from him or anything like that.
- So you've never met him or anything?
Jonathan: No, I've never met him.
- And even though Jonathan didn't know a lot about our da, he knew a ton more about the rest of our family.
- Our granddad Herman, who's, you know, your granddad too, he had a very like a country growing up, you know?
Kristen: Country.
- On the water.
Very country like.
Kristen: I'm for sure emotional today, because we met a first cousin that we didn't expect to meet.
And so it's, that's just a lot to take in alone.

I wanna talk about the relative part of this show.
Team Blue, I would imagine that you thought that your journey was primarily about and for Demetrius, and yet it was very different today for you, Chonta.
What happened?
Chonta: I found my cousin.

Dan: Kaley and Kristen, you guys had a tremendously long drive.
Did you get any answers tonigh?
- Absolutely.
We met our first cousin on our dad's side that we've never seen before or met.
This is Jonathan, and we have the same eyes and face and hair.
Dan: Oh man, you guys do look so much alike, it is amazing.
- What's going on?
Dan: Maria.
You're looking for family.
Did you get any answers today?
- Oh my goodness.
You guys were supposed to give me one family member, and I end up with 10 brothers and sisters.
- Are you kidding me?
- All the same mom and dad.

Maria: All 10 of them.
And this is when they were younger.

- The weirdest thing is they're all in red, and this was over 10 years ago.
