Thaddeus: I don't know who I will meet.

Let us know the next road I should be lookin' for.
- I did, I did.
- How?
- Do your part, Jon.
Do your part.
Tia: Oh, I can't!
Ugh!
Dan: ...and devastating news... - She tried to kill herself.
- He passed away.
- It makes me sad.
- You missed out on a lot.
- [sniffs] [sighs] Dan: ...would push teams to their breaking point.
♪ Dan: But with each day... - We're gonna get to meet a relative.
Dan: ...new faces eagerly waited to embrace their long-lost family.
- Hi, I'm Thaddeus.
- I'm your dad, Tommy.
- Oh!
Oh wow!
- Yes.
- I'm your sister.
Leah: [laughs] Jon: There's something different about hugging blood.
Tia: There are not words to describe it.
Thaddeus: It was just a bowl of emotions.
Carolen: This is gonna be a lifetime journey for us.
Nolin: Seeing all the similarities, and, it was crazy.
Kentrelle: Family is growin' fast.
I'll never forget this moment.
Karen: They all welcomed me with opened arms for the very first time.
- Oh-- Nolin: [laughs] - my goodness.
Kentrelle: I felt the love from the beginning, just looking at her eyes.
Carolen: It's almost, you know, like, a feeling is hard to describe.
It's life-changing.
- Nolin, meet your father, Quint.
Aw.
Nolin: It was very emotional and so exciting.
Sharon: Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lord.
Tia: My life has definitely changed for the better.
Angie: I love you so much.
Nolin: I love you.
Angie: Ah!
- [laughing] Carolen: Just feel overwhelmed with joy.
Nolin: It's one of the, the best moments of my life.
Mary: Thank you, Jesus.
[smooching] Jon: I have a dad who wants to be a part of my life.
And honestly, dude, I could be done with the race right now.
I'm, I don't need the money.
I don't need it.
I have my dad; that's all I need.
You know?
♪ [percussion] Dan: By Day 5 of the race-- Each of you had your triumphs and your challenges-- Nolin and Leah were the only team to remain strike-free.
- Y'all gettin' a little too comfortable there.
- I'm not a big fan of Team Green right now.
Carolen: No city maps, no directions.
Dan: But things quickly went downhill for the siblings, with two strikes in two days.
[dramatic beat] By Day 8, the fear of elimination intensified for all four teams.
Karen: We cannot afford to get another strike.
Nolin: Let's do it, let's do it.
Kentrelle: We had to hustle.
Leah: I think you should turn around.
- This is east!
Kentrelle: We're not gettin' another strike.
Nolin: We were just lost.
Dan: But Team Green's immunity forced Team Black out of the competition.
Tia, Carolen, you'll forever be a part of our Relative Race family.
We love you.
On Day 9, Teams Red and Green were one strike away from elimination, but in the end, Team Blue picked up their second strike.
Now, three teams are heading to Atlanta, Georgia, where the final day of Relative Race awaits.
Here, they will face the heat and brave the flames as they work as a team for one final shot... [music intensifies] ...at $50,000.
DNA tells us who we are and where we came from.
Following their own DNA, four teams are racing... Jon: It's gonna be right here.
Kentrelle: Go, go, go!
Dan: ...to win $50,000... Nolin: We made it!
Dan: ...and to find their family.
[knocking] Singer: ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Dan: Perhaps nowhere is teamwork more important than in the face of tragedy.
Our nation's first responders work as a team everyday to keep us all safe.
Doctors, nurses, police officers, and firefighters exemplify what teamwork can accomplish.
[doors slam] And today, our three remaining teams will compete in a series of challenges at one of the largest training facilities for firefighter recruits in the country!
Below me is the Georgia Public Safety Training Center just south of Atlanta.
And it's here where we're about to find out who our new Relative Race champion will be.
This 1,000-acre complex trains thousands of recruits every year to understand the teamwork needed to fight fires, rescue victims, and keep us all safe when we need it most.
We're about to find out who can handle the mental, the emotional, and the physical toll it takes to become a firefighter.
Which team does that the best will walk away with $50,000.
[beep] Okay, go ahead.
Bring 'em in.
[beep] Man 1: Roger.
That's a go for the teams.
- Bringin' 'em in now.
Kentrelle: This is it.
We made it to Day 10.
Leah: It's all led up to this moment.
Thaddeus: No matter what happens, this race has changed me for the better.
♪ Dan: Good morning, teams, and congratulations on making it to this final day of your Relative Race.
This is Day 10.
For the past nine days, you guys have raced across the country on a journey to find family, and that's what I want to talk to you about first.
Hopefully, your road to discovery has changed your lives in a positive way.
Karen, is that true for you?
- Oh my gosh, is it ever true.
This journey was all about Thaddeus, but I had a chance to meet some of my family along the way, and Thaddeus's family accepted me as their own.
I gained three sisters, some nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins.
- Thaddeus, what has this journey meant to you?
- This journey has been life-changing.
Um, coming in, I was so lonely, just in my head a lot.
Um, but leading out, oh my goodness, I have family beyond family.
- Congratulations.
Thaddeus: Thank you.
Dan: Leah.
You were out for nine days supporting your brother.
Reflect back on those nine days for me.
- Yeah, I mean, his family became my family, but I also just feel like I got to watch my brother, like, grow up before my eyes.
He's not just my baby brother anymore, so I'm very proud of him.
- Nolin, you discovered brothers.
- I did.
It was more than I could ever imagine.
Um, I didn't know what to expect comin' in.
I never realized how much family I did have, and how much they cared about me, and Leah, and our family back where I grew up, and so, it's just been incredible.
- Kentrelle, what has this road of discovery meant for you?
Kentrelle: Um, Dan, it's meant everything.
I, I never knew I had this big of a family or that I was a only child or a only grandchild.
Like, I feel so special.
[laughs] I reunited with my mom and my grandmother after 24 years, so, thanks.
Dan: Jon, how has this journey been for you?
- Uh, this journey's been absolutely fantastic.
Exhausting and amazing at the same time.
Um, I have, like, twelve siblings that we know of.
My father, my cousins.
It's just much more than I ever could have imagined it was, um, and I'm very grateful.
Dan: This is gonna make for some amazing family reunions in the future.
It sounds like each and every one of you have had this wonderful journey, a journey of finding new family.
[whoosh] And speaking of family, firefighters are a family in and of themselves.
They are fiercely loyal, and work as a team to get the job done.
And you're about to find out what it takes to become one.
Thaddeus: Ooh!
I'm hoping that we are taking some fires out, but I know that they go through a lot, so my mind is going everywhere.
Dan: Today, you need to work as a team to overcome a series of challenges that are similar in scope to what fire recruits may go through.
- This is every little kid's dream, and we get to do it today.
- We have no idea why we're at a firefighting facility, but, you know, really it sounds like it's gonna be pretty fun.
- Let's go ahead and get to the competition.
Today, you'll be faced with three unique challenges.
Now, each of these challenges will award points.
Twenty points for first, ten points for second, and five points for third.
However, and here's the key, there will also be Recruit Points available in some of our challenges.
These Recruit Points are hidden points that will be based on how well and how fast you complete certain parts of each challenge.
Kentrelle: So as Dan is talkin' about multiple point challenges, I'm just thinkin', like, ugh, I don't know what he's about to get us into, but... [sighs] it's gonna be hard.
We gonna work for this 50k.
- At any point, the game can turn in anyone's favor.
Dan: We'll find out who picks up the Recruit Points at the end of the day.
So, are you guys ready?
All: Yes.
Dan: Your first challenge on this final day is Hydrant Hookup.
[dramatic crescendo] [alarms blaring] [dramatic music] ♪ [whoosh] In this challenge, teams must first correctly put on fire turnout gear, checked off by an instructor.
Then, they'll hop in a fire engine and head to a fire hydrant.
Here, they'll find a bag with parts needed to connect the hydrant to the fire truck, and an instruction card on how to do it.
Once hooked up correctly, water will shoot from the top of the engine to signal that they have completed this challenge.
Well, teams, now you know what you're facing, I want to introduce you to the man that will be inspecting you.
Say hello to Chris Whitehead.
All: [greetings] Dan: Chris is a fire instructor here at the Georgia Public Safety Training Center, and he's going to assure that you guys are geared up just the way a fire recruit would be.
It's to keep you safe.
Now, Chris, when I look at all this gear, I'm thinkin', that's a lot to put on, and it's a lot to put on correctly.
Is it difficult?
- It is, and it, it's cumbersome.
There's a lot to it, and it takes repetition.
When we're training our fire recruits it's every day, multiple times a day.
'Cause it's gotta be fast, but it's gotta be safe and effective at the same time.
Dan: And those are the keys, potentially, to a win.
Are you ready?
All: Yes.
Dan: Good, because Hydrant Hookup, your first challenge of the day, begins in three, two, one, go!
Thaddeus: Oh my gosh.
Okay.
Leah: 'Kay ready?
Nolin: All right, yeah, yeah.
- For the gear, we did not get any instructions.
We had to look at it and use common sense to put it on.
Jon: You got it?
Kentrelle: What's this-- is this right?
Jon: Uh, yeah, no.
Dan: Kentrelle and Jon have the early lead.
But this is all about teamwork.
Jon: Teamwork is the theme of the season, and helping each other will definitely get it done faster than just trying to, to assemble it yourself.
♪ Nolin: Gotta get the jacket on, zip it up.
Dan: Wow, it's neck and neck right now between Team Blue and Team Green.
Kentrelle: You gotta-- see-- Jon: I can't get it.
Dan: Oh, Kentrelle is helping Jon.
Jon couldn't find his zipper.
Kentrelle: We can't necessarily see everything, um, and make sure everything is, like, tight enough, uh, so teamwork definitely came into play.
Nolin: Helmet goes on.
Can you tighten mine real quick?
Leah: 'Kay.
You don't realize how much they have to do or how heavy their gear is, so, it does make you appreciate that.
Dan: Oh, interesting.
They're, they're strapping each other on.
That's probably easier than trying to find that strap on their own.
Jon: Gear check!
Dan: Gear check.
♪ Jon: Let's go, let's go!
Come on!
Dan: Thumbs up for Team Blue.
Kentrelle and Jon are off.
Now they have to attempt the second part of this challenge, and that's not gonna be easy.
Jon: Getting that thumbs up, um, and knowing that we got it first, uh, it's a definitely feeling of elation, so we raced over to that truck.
[siren] Dan: Team Blue is racing off to the second part of this first challenge.
Kentrelle: That's what I'm talkin' about!
Jon: Let's go!
Dan: Team Green is close behind.
So is Team Red.
Who's gonna call out next for a gear check?
Karen: Once we saw the Blue Team was off and runnin', we knew that we had to hurry up, get on our gear, and hop on the truck as quickly as possible.
Dan: Team Green is getting ready for a gear check, but so is Team Red.
Nolin: Gear check!
Thaddeus: Gear check!
Dan: Team Green called for gear check first.
Team Red, you're gonna have to wait.
Thaddeus: We were neck and neck.
They got their gear checked, and right shortly after, we got ours.
- Green Team, go.
Dan: Team Green is good to go.
- Red Team, go.
Dan: They get a thumbs up!
Team Red is off into their engine.
And so Team Green is firing up their truck.
Here comes Team Red right behind them.
This is a close race.
Man 2: Looks good, looks good.
[siren blaring] - A bonus point for teamwork!
Jon: [laughing] - Bonus points for teamwork!
[distant sirens] We got this.
Jon: Come on, come on, come on, come on.
[sirens] Kentrelle: Okay.
Jon: All right.
Kentrelle: You got it!
Jon: All right, go ahead.
Kentrelle: "Use tools to open the hydrant all the way."
Okay, but... "Water must flow only through the five-inch line"-- Both: --"to the truck."
Jon: We can see Team Green and Team Red heading to their hydrants, so we need to get this done as fast as possible.
[siren] Karen: Our truck pulls up to the hydrant.
We have to race out to make up for time to catch up with Team Blue.
Kentrelle: Cool.
- Where's the hose?
Right here!
Nolin: First thing to do is grab the hose.
Leah: The hose isn't too heavy, but it is folded, so we have to pull it pretty hard to roll it out correctly.
Kentrelle: I thought I did somethin' wrong.
Oh, we supposed to take it off all the way?
Jon: After we grabbed our hose, the next step was to take off the side caps and install those two valves.
Thaddeus: Hold on, Mom.
I, I think I gotta loosen this up.
Karen: Okay.
Dan: Everybody is furiously working to get their fire hose hooked up to those hydrants.
Whoever does that first and gets water spurting out of the truck wins this challenge.
[whoosh] Thaddeus: Mom, we're going left.
Karen: This is my right.
Thaddeus: Okay, the fire hydrant towards me.
Dan: Oh, you can see Nolin.
He is shifting, moving those parts around on that hydrant.
Jon: Ah.
Kentrelle: Got it?
Jon: And then this goes all the way through.
Dan: Jon and Kentrelle are so close right now.
[hose clicking] Jon: Ready?
Dan: Right now, Kentrelle and Jon are working really well as a team.
Kentrelle: You got it?
Jon: I was twisting the top.
I saw it go into the hose, and, you know, kinda the hose got tighter, and I was like, oh, okay, you know, we did somethin' right.
Dan: Who will be the first one to get water coming out of their truck?
Karen: Hold it while you tight.
Thaddeus: We're good, we're good.
Okay.
Jon: All right.
Oh wait.
Kentrelle: No.
♪ Dan: Oh, and there it goes!
Jon: Heck yeah, dude!
Dan: Team Blue, Kentrelle and Jon, have won Hydrant Hookup.
Kentrelle: When the water shot out in the air, I felt like a kid in the summer with the hydrants going off.
It felt so like, [sighs] can I play in it now?
No?
Okay.
Jon: It was really nice to see, it was like, 'kay, you know, challenge one done.
You know, we did it right.
Kentrelle: Mhm.
- And with that water shooting into the air, Team Blue picks up the 20 points for first place.
♪ Karen: Maybe, yeah.
I'm thinking go like-- Yeah, 'cause there's grooves down here that they fit in.
You see it?
Thaddeus: Okay.
Twist it.
Karen: We're looking at Blue.
We knew that their water had already gone up.
But then we're also looking at Green, and we're like, oh no, we're racing against the clock.
And we knew that we were neck and neck.
Thaddeus: [sighs] I think it's on.
Dan: It looks like they've got it figured out.
They have opened up that hydrant.
Water is gushing out to the side, but they have to get water up and out of their truck.
Nolin: Turned the water on, and we realized that we forgot to shut two valves on either side, and so quickly, we shut it off real quick.
There we go.
Karen: Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
♪ Thaddeus: [grunts] Okay.
Karen: Yes!
Dan: And there it goes!
It's a tie!
Karen: Woo-hoo!
Nolin: Hey, we did it, we did it!
Woo!
Let's go!
Karen: Yay, we did it!
Thaddeus: Chest bump!
Both: [laughing] - Congratulations to both Team Red and to Team Green.
They will both pick up 10 points as they tied for second place in Hydrant Hookup.
- We were definitely shooting for first, and we thought we did pretty well at it, so that was kind of disappointing, but, uh, we're not finished yet, so we're gonna keep our heads up and keep goin'.
Karen: I cannot believe we tied.
- That was way too close.
We gotta step it up for this next challenge.
- So, it feels amazing to get first place, but, uh, we're not gonna let it get to our heads.
We're gonna make sure we keep, keep the same energy, keep the same teamwork going on, and, um, reassure ourselves that, that we can, we can do this as long as we push forward.
Jon: Yeah.
Just keepin' our heads down and charging right through the competition.
♪ Dan: One down, two more to go.
Teams, are you ready for your next challenge?
Kentrelle: Woo!
Nolin: Let's do it!
Karen: Yes!
- This is Fire in the Hole!
[dramatic drumbeats] Have you ever thought about putting out a raging fire?
Kentrelle: Absolutely.
Dan: Yes.
No.
Maybe.
- Sure.
Dan: Maybe.
Well, you're about to find out what that is like.
That's right.
Fire recruits have to perform this next drill as part of their training, and now, so do you.
But before you can put it out, you'll have to build it.
Let me explain.
In this challenge, teams will perform a training burn and put out a fire.
First, they'll arrange identical furniture inside a room.
Once arranged to their liking, fire instructors will set the rooms ablaze.
Once all the fires reach a flash point, teams will use the fire hoses with various nozzles to put out their fires and complete the challenge.
Well teams, let me just say this.
How you choose to arrange your furniture will greatly affect how easy it is to put this fire out.
So, Team Green, do you know how you're gonna construct your room?
Are you giving up any secrets?
- We're not givin' up any secrets.
Dan: Ah.
Team Blue, do you have a plan?
- Oh, absolutely.
Dan: I love the confidence.
Team Red, are you worried about building it before you put it out?
- No!
We got this!
Karen: [laughs] - Fantastic!
Seems like you're all ready to go.
Before we begin, I want to point out that there are three fire instructors behind you.
Each is there to help you move your furniture into your room.
Now, if you ask them how to do it, they're not gonna give you any clues.
But if you need 'em to move things around, hey, they're a great moving company.
Gentlemen, are you ready?
Move into position.
Teams, are you ready?
All: [clapping] Dan: All right.
You have ten minutes to put your rooms together.
Your time... starts now!
Thaddeus: Can we get the couch?
Okay, Ma, get back here.
Karen: We started with the sofa, and it was way too heavy for us to pick up, so we had some assistance with that.
Kentrelle: I think we put this against the wall.
Jon: Against the wall?
Okay.
Kentrelle: Why did we not say that out loud?
Nolin: Our two mattress we put in first.
Uh, we were wanting to keep them upright leaned against, um, either the wall or the pole in the center of the room.
Um, that way we could get to both sides of the mattress and hopefully put it out easier that way.
Jon: Doesn't matter which side it goes on.
Kentrelle: Nope.
But I'm thinkin' the hardest side to put out would probably be the mattress because it's against the wall, so we'll kinda see how easy it is to put it out.
Thaddeus: Let's lay it down.
When I heard the challenge, I thought about wildfires and how they spread.
They spread because the trees are so close together and bunched up together.
So I told my mom, hey, let's spread the furniture out, put them as close to the ground as possible, put the base of chairs, the biggest part, to the ground, and let the legs stay up.
♪ Dan: You have three minutes remaining, teams.
Kentrelle: Put it up-- yeah.
Just like that.
So if one go out, other-- all of them go out.
Jon: Yeah.
Kentrelle: Even-- puttin' it-- How 'bout doin' somethin' like this.
Jon: Okay, cool.
Kentrelle: We tried to put everything together to kind of make one kind of bonfire scene.
One fire should make it a lot easier to kind of put out, so we'll see.
Nolin: Yeah, those chairs'll be easy to shoot kind of through into that side, too, so I say we just-- we need to make it as easy as possible to get to-- Leah: Put that one here?
Nolin: Yeah.
Let's put 'em side by side.
Leah: We're trying to lay things down so that we can reach things in the back easier and also hopefully that there's more surface area exposed and that way we can put it out faster.
Dan: 30 seconds, teams!
You have 30 seconds!
♪ Jon: This will probably go on the opposite wall.
Kentrelle: Yeah.
Jon: Okay.
Nolin: The TV was one of our last things that we put in, and we didn't really know what to do with the TV.
Hoping it would-- we could just throw it in there wherever and we could just deal with that when it comes.
[thunk] Thaddeus: We took the dresser in, and I'm thinking that it burns faster and it stays at that heat when everything's so bunched together, so I thought, hey, let's open up the drawers to spread it out and take the fire out quickly.
Dan: Ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one!
That's it!
Time's up!
Thaddeus: We're good.
♪ Nolin: I'm feelin' good about where we placed things.
Just thinkin' on the fly, we did the best that we could.
I like our setup, having things set down and our big chairs off to the side, and mattress is stood up, so I'm excited to see how we do.
Dan: All right, teams, how do you think you did?
All: [overlapping responses] Dan: Oh, yeah?
I got thumbs up all across this line.
Well guess what, teams?
It's about to get hot.
Fire instructors, are you ready to light it up?
Teams, let's burn this down.
All: [cheering, clapping] Dan: Let's go!
Kentrelle: Woo, arsoning!
I'm not a fan of arson, but, I mean, who wouldn't wanna, you know, put stuff on fire?
Like, that's so fun.
♪ Dan: The next part of Fire in the Hole involves critical teamwork to put out the fire.
One person operates a hose with the nozzle of their choosing.
Their teammate will use a thermal imaging camera to see the hot spots and the status of the fire.
Once a team feels their fire is out, they'll call for a fire inspector to perform a check.
A thumbs up means your fire is indeed out.
A thumbs down means you better keep spraying.
First team to put out their fire gets 20 points, second scores 10, and third place picks up 5.
♪ Dan: Teams, you're lookin' good.
Are you ready?
All: Yes!
Dan: Fire instructors, are you ready?
Man 3: Good to go!
Dan: Light it up!
[suspenseful music] ♪ [fire roaring] Dan: Flash point, teams!
Put your fires out!
Kentrelle: Let's go, let's go.
Karen: Go, go, go.
Dan: Oh, you can feel the heat from those fires right now.
Jon: Stay right in the middle.
Karen: Right, right, right.
To the right.
Go right, go right.
When we first saw the smoke, we really didn't think much was happening at all.
Thaddeus: And then they opened the doors, and whoa, flames galore, just flames.
Jon: Down.
Karen: Right.
Good job.
Dan: Team Green and Blue have the bore nozzle.
Team Red is using that combo nozzle.
Karen: We have two hoses that we can use, and if one hose isn't working, we are allowed to switch if we think that the other hose might be more powerful.
Kentrelle: [grunts] Geez.
Jon: It's powerful, isn't it?
Yeah, this is, this is the one to use.
Just keep aiming it.
Kentrelle: The nozzle was actually really hard to kinda operate, 'cause it's like, a hundred pounds of pressure comin' out, so it's like, ugh, I'm kind of leaning on it to kind of, like, make sure I keep it straight, but it's also like, making the stream come out less.
And it was just a lot of finagling to kind of work on with the hose.
Thaddeus: I was really struggling out there.
At one point, I just, I put my whole body down.
I just was holding the hose, straddling it, just on the ground.
And it worked out.
Karen: Bring it down.
To the left more, left.
Dan: Leah, Jon, and Karen are using those thermal imaging cameras to direct the water to the hot points in their fire.
Karen: The thermal imaging camera is used as a guide for where the hot spots are.
We're looking for reds and blues, and when we no longer see reds and blues, that would mean that the fire is out.
Leah: Keep goin'.
Go farther, it's not getting in.
You gotta get it in.
Okay, let's go.
I don't know.
Nolin: Nope, not that.
Leah: Get it farther back.
You need to get it against that wall.
At first I didn't need the infrared; it was just one big fire.
But as he started spraying, it did become a lot more helpful, and I feel like it really showed me that the fire was, um, higher than you would think, and in the corners of the building.
Nolin: Yeah, it was hard to reach those spots.
It was at a weird angle.

While looking through the infrared imaging camera, the colors were starting to disappear, um, right where the hose is aimed, so, you know, and that's kind of the goal.
That's what we wanted.
So as the colors started to disappear, I was like, move on to the next place.

Um, it was hard to read the infrared, but we decided to try 'cause it looked from just our eyes, it looked like it was almost out.
Chris: So when we go into the boxes with the thermal imagers followin' the contestants after their water application to check, we're lookin' for what we call hot spots.
So is there any flame in there still burning that they have missed, they can't see, they've just misinterpreted what they're seein' on their camera potentially?

So I was getting pretty frustrated with that.

Kentrelle: Where's the fire?
Jon: The left box.

Thaddeus: We are waiting for what feels like forever.

Karen: He didn't say anything.

Karen: And then he finally emerges from the smoke.
Dan: Team Red is the first to put their fire out, and they have won this challenge.

Kentrelle: So, uh, the plan was to check often so we could kind of see where we at, so we could kind of see if there's anymore fires or if we're actually done or not.
- But us checking often, I guess, meant less water was going in, so maybe that ended up hurting us in the long run.
- As far as contributing to what got their rooms in-- you know, out quicker versus the others, how they laid those rooms out made a big difference.
So Red Team had their room a little bit more spread out.
They had a little bit more air space, so it took a little bit longer for the fire to get going, but it was easier to get it extinguished, 'cause they didn't have as many spots that were difficult to get to.
Uh, Blue Team, really fast fire spread, but the load was more compact, so it was really hard for those to get to the water to those hard-to-reach spots.
And then Green Team was a little bit of both.
They were kind of little bit more spacing, but not as much as Red.
They kind of filled in that medium between our Red and Blue Teams.
- Coming in second, we would like to come in first.
We're just ready to be competitive in the last one, and hopefully we can come out on top.
- The communication that my mom and I had, it worked.
We were talking.
Um, she was telling me left, right, low, up.
Um, it was perfect.
We relied on one another, and we trusted one another.
When we got first, I felt so good.
I felt so good that I sprayed Dan.
Karen and Thaddeus: [laughing] Oh my gosh, when we got that right, it was like the best feeling ever, because we were the first team to extinguish our fire.
♪ Dan: Well, teams, I can see you're all geared up and ready for your final challenge of the day.
Behind you is one of the training buildings used by fire recruits as they learn how to put out fires and save lives at the same time.
You're about to do something similar, which is 3-Story Rescue.
Nolin: When we hear about 3-Story Rescue, um, I get excited.
I mean, it's our last challenge, so we're gonna go out swinging.
Dan: All right.
Let's take a look at how this thing's gonna work.
In this challenge, teams must enter a three-story building.
The first floor is filled with smoke, and they must navigate a dark labyrinth to find a high rise hose kit and bring it to the second floor.
Here, they attach the hose to a water line, head to the balcony, and choose a nozzle.
Then, they must fill a 50-gallon drum with water so that the basketball at the bottom floats up to the top and spills out of their container.
On the third floor, they must locate a dummy wearing their team colors and transport it up to the roof.
Once on the roof, they must secure the dummy in a stretcher basket and safely lower their dummy to the ground in order to complete this challenge.
Keep in mind that this challenge, unlike the others, has multiple Recruit Points available.
Jon: Really never know what those hidden points are worth, so, yeah, we'll just have to see.
Dan: So, are you ready for this final challenge of the day?
All: [cheer] Dan: All right, it all comes down to this.
3-Story Rescue begins in three, two, one, go!
Nolin: Woo, let's get in there.
♪ Dan: Team Red may be the first team into the building, but this is where everything changes.

Karen: When we first went in, we saw nothing but smoke, and we had to find our kit in the smoke.

It was important that we stay together on the bottom level.
Um, it's really smoky, can't see.
Thaddeus: Mom.
Karen: Thaddeus, where are you?
Thaddeus: Mom.

Leah: You hardly can see in front of you at all, maybe a foot, and so you have to really check every corner for one of the kits.

As we're lookin' for the stairs, uh, we get a little turned around because it's hard to see.

Kentrelle: So there were kinks in the hose, um, that was kinda stoppin' the water pressure from goin' as fast as it could.

Kentrelle: So Jon, um, kinda finagled the hose a little bit and then boom, I have full water pressure.

Karen: As we were filling the barrel, the basketball came to the top, so it got stuck in the corner.

It took us a little bit, just to hit the ball-basketball in the right spot to lift it up and over.

♪ Going onto the third floor, we were still in third place, being the last to get up the stairs to connect the pipe, um, the last to have the basketball float over the top, so we really had to focus.
Dan: All the teams are back in the building and now heading to the next floor, where they will search for a team-colored dummy.
Thaddeus: Mom, come on!
[intense music] ♪ We had to find that little dummy, put that dummy on a stretcher, and carry him all the way up to the roof.
Leah: Nolin!
Nolin: What?
Yeah, yeah.
Leah: Come on!
Nolin: Right here?
Leah: Yeah.
Nolin: We find the dummy.
It was a little tricky because, uh, the color of the shirt was hidden under its jacket.
Thaddeus: Ma!
Karen: Thaddeus, where are you?

Karen: You fou— Thaddeus, did you find it?
Thaddeus: Yes.
Karen: Okay.
Thaddeus: It was a red mark on the jacket, so I thought it was for us.

Thaddeus: They passed me and snatched it out of my hand.

As we load him onto the board, we get the middle strap on, and that goes smoothly.

Karen: You sure this is not it?

After all that searching, I finally find our dummy.
Kentrelle: Go, go, go.
Jon: Hold on!
Kentrelle: Okay.
Getting out on the roof first was a, a great feeling, um, just had to make sure everything was together.
Nolin: We're good.
Swing, swing, swing, your end, swing your end.
Good.
As we get up to the last floor, we see that Blue Team is already up there.
Almost there.
Leah: [exhales] Nolin: And so we run over, but we realize we have to unfasten what we already did and wrap it around the crate too to hold both of them together.
[thud] Nolin: 'Kay.
Leah: How do we strap him in?
Dan: This is where it gets tricky.
You can see Nolin and Leah carefully communicating with each other to ensure that their dummy is secured.
Kentrelle: Okay, you ready?
Jon: Yeah.
[grunts] Kentrelle: We put him over the edge.
We drop it just a little bit.
[dramatic music] Kentrelle: Okay.
Jon: Oh no!
[thud] Dan: OH!
WHOA!
THAT has gotta hurt!
Kentrelle: We didn't even fasten the buckles, so my heart crashes.
Dan: It was clear it was not secured.
That is disastrous.
Leah: Yeah, get him strapped in there tight 'cause we don't wanna get... Nolin: Don't wanna drop.
'Kay, we're in the lead, we got... make sure we do it right.
Kentrelle: Jon, come on!

Dan: They now have to head back down, grab the dummy, go back up to the top, and start all over again.

So, when I saw the light, I was never so grateful to see light in my life.

I had this body in front of me, so there wasn't much I could move around to kinda get to him.

- [breathing heavily] I got really lightheaded, um, I couldn't really see straight.
I was really hot, really tired, um, and I ended up passing out.
Kentrelle: Come on man, we got it.

Jon: [loudly grunts] Little bit disoriented laying on the ground there, um, I was, I was trying my best.
Kentrelle: But, I did make sure like, he was okay after the fall.
And he got right back up.

Karen: When I heard that Green's basket hit the bottom before ours, I was just like really disappointed.
I felt deflated at that point.
Thaddeus: That's all you.

Karen: Yes, it's on the ground.
Dan: Congratulations Team Red, you have completed the challenge and finished in second place.
Thaddeus: Oh!
I was still remaining positive.
I don't know, I feel confident that we still did okay.
Dan: Kentrelle and Jon, you have finished in third place, but you pick up five points.
Remember teams, there are hidden points, still waiting to be awarded.
Jon: Going into the final tally, I'm definitely not super optimistic after what just happened.
Kentrelle: But we tried our best, and that's all that matters.

The points are so close between all of us.
Leah: Goin' into the finale, we're feelin' pretty good.
Nolin: Yeah, no matter what happens, this race has changed me for the better.
Jon: We're goin' into the tally, I don't think our chances are super great, mainly 'cause what happened in that third challenge, but we also really never know what those hidden points are worth, so we'll just have to see.

I wanna talk to you about each of the challenges.

And in the end, that's what you did successfully.
You were the first to see that water shooting out of your fire engine.

Team Green and Team Red, you both tied and picked up 10 points each.
However, remember when we talked about those "Recruit Points?"
Those that were hidden points that we would tell you about at the end of the day?
In this case, those Recruit Points went to the team that was the first one to get their gear on correctly.

And so we moved on to the second challenge, where things literally began to heat up.

- Dan the Man, um, those— that power was just too strong, so I just laid there and just pray like, I got it.
Karen and Thaddeus: [chuckling] Dan: But in the end, there was one team that was able to put out their fire first and that was Team Red.

[ding] And so as we moved into the third and final challenge, it was Team Blue that had 35 points.
Team Red was only 5 points behind with 30, and Team Green, you had ground to make up with 20 points.

Team Green: [cheering] Leah: Good job.
Dan: Today, you were training like fire recruits and so you had to overcome smoke, water, and fire.
In the third and final part of this challenge, you had to find your dummy, put it on the board, transport it up to the roof, get it into that safety cage, and safely onto the concrete at the bottom.
And so, you guys had to feel the nuances in all of the different details that actual firefighters go through.
Have I got the right person in the right manner?
Can I transport them safely?
Can I save them?
Team Blue, you were the first to emerge on the roof, and you were the first one to get your dummy over the edge.
What was going through your mind?
Jon: When we saw the dummy fall, all our hopes came kinda crashing down.
Kentrelle: Okay.
Jon: Oh no.
Dan: OH!
[thud] WHOA!
That is disastrous.
Jon: We thought we'd secured it in, uh, properly.
That obviously wasn't the case.
Dan: Challenging for each of you, right up to the final moments.
But in the end, it was Team Green that finished in first place, picking up the 20 points.
Team Red, you finished in second, picking up 10 points.
And Team Blue, you picked up 5 points for third.
So, after this part of three challenges... you're all tied.
40 points, 40 points, and 40 points.
- No, we, we each tied 40-40-40.
I didn't think we would be at that point so I was— at that point, it's anyone's game, really.
- It's going to come down to those final hidden Recruit Points, and I hope that we come out on top.
♪ Dan: Now, remember that I told you that there were multiple Recruit Points available in that final challenge?
♪ Well in fact, there were 10 points available for each part of the challenge.
And now we're gonna find out who picked up those points.
The first Recruit Points goes to the team that found their high-rise kit the fastest.
And that was Team Red.
You picked up 10 more points.
[ding] The second set of Recruit Points went to the team that was the first to emerge on the roof with their dummy.
That was Team Blue.
[ding] And so at this point, Team Red and Team Blue, you're both tied.
And so it comes down to the final Recruit Points.
The final Recruit Points went to the team that was the first... to get their ball out of the 50-gallon drum.
That was Team Red.
[ding] Which means with 60 points, you are the new Relative Race champions.
You have found your family and on this day, you overcame smoke, water, and fire.
You are the new champions and with it, the $50,000 is yours.
Congratulations to Team Red.
All: [clapping] - Oh my gosh!
Ah!

[cheer] Thaddeus: We did it!
♪ Nolin: Congratulations.

Jon: Good job guys.

Leah: Good job.
Nolin: Good work, good work.
It was a great journey.
Karen: I literally could not believe it.
I mean, we were— I was so excited.
I mean, completely ecstatic, over the top, blown away, I mean, any other description you can come up with.
It was the most amazing feeling.
Jon: Good job y'all.
Thaddeus: You know, group hug, that was— Jon: [laughs] Y'all kicked butt.
[indistinct chatter] Leah: I'm gonna take away so much, I mean, not only are Nolin and I closer and we work together really well, but also just the new relationships, like, we really care a lot about these people.
Nolin: Throughout this journey, I've met a lot of close relatives.
I've met the closest people that you can have, and that's something that was just truly special, somethin' that we didn't know really would happen.
We didn't know who we would find or how many we would find and we just met a, an awesome family.
Jon: This journey has answered a lot of questions that I have held throughout my life and now I can finally close those doors with confidence and open new ones and form new relationships with this family that I've found and I'm— I'll be eternally grateful for that.
Kentrelle: Havin' the opportunity to establish these new lifelong bonds and being able to find pieces of myself in my family, I can't be more grateful.
- Even though the race is over, the real race has just begun.
It's all about family and I have gained so many family, so many people that I'm just lookin' at you like, wow, we're related.
I'm so excited to turn that into something big and I'm, I'm very thankful for that.

Dan: I have never ever seen a day like today.
