Trinesha met her cousin, David, and her veteran great-uncle, John.
John: Welcome!

Dan: Patrick saw photos of his sisters for the very first time.
Patrick: Yeah, definitely getting me very excited to meet them.
Dan: Andy learned some difficult news from his cousin, Erinn.
- I have to tell you that on this journey, you will not be meeting your maternal side of the family.
- Okay.
My mother's side of the family did not want to have contact with me at this time.
Geselle met her sister, Latisha, and learned of her father's passing.
- He, he was murdered.
He would've been too happy to meet you.
Geselle: It felt like somebody took all the lights and turned 'em off and everything became dark.
[crying] Dan: DNA tells us who we are and where we came from.
Following their own DNA, four teams are racing... Taquida: Woo!
[honk honk] - Are you kidding me?
Patrick: [snorts] Dan: to win $50,000... Mitchell: Go!
Go, go, go, go, go.
Dan: and to find their family.
[knocking] Singer: ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh, oh, oh ♪ ♪ Oh, oh-oh ♪ ♪ Dan: It's the morning of Day 3 and Teams Green and Black both have one strike each.
Patrick: Problem that we got a strike, but to think that you'd make it through this whole race without one was pretty crazy anyways.
Dan: All four teams are on the east side of the country.
Team Green won yesterday and picked the Leg Up benefit to use in today's race.
- We're excited to see what this benefit is and what we can do with it.
Taquida: On Day 3, we still have no strikes.
We wanna keep it that way.
There's a secret prize that gets unlocked tonight, and we wanna be the first ones to get it.
Mitchell: Today I'm feelin' way more optimistic.
We had such a great night and just listenin' to her family's stories and everything, I realized that we can't dwell on the little stuff.
Everything is something just to be overcame and I think today we're gonna do great.
Callie: We know that we have to get our competitive game faces on.
♪ Dan: All of the teams are waking up with newfound relatives and a memory they will never forget.
Callie: We wake up this morning, it's Day 3.
We're obviously very tired.
Patrick: Mm-hm.
Callie: Getting more tired by the minute.
But they were delightful and made us the best breakfast.
I got bacon in my pocket right now!
Patrick: I was gonna say bacon, bacon, bacon!
And we love it.
Geselle: Spending time with my sister last night was amazing.
We got to laugh, joke.
I was just really just excited to know that I'm not in this thing alone, you know, that I actually have family and more family to meet.
Andy: We get up in the morning and have breakfast with my cousin Erinn and her daughter, and we start looking through old photos.
Lizzy: [gasps] They're all labeled, honey.
- That is amazing.
And really talking and getting to know more about the family history and about each other, and it was such an amazing experience.

- Wow.
♪ Trinesha: Thank you so much for hosting us last night.
It was amazing.
- Yes.
- And I-- we really enjoyed talking to you and getting to know you a little bit-- Mitchell: Oh yeah.
- and really comfortable, really comfortable.

But I have something that's special, it's actually special for both of you.
I'm gonna show you something that you should have, which is the book I wrote.
Mitchell: Oh!
David: My dad's biography.
- Oh, it's his bi-- [gasps] David: This is his biography.
This is your copy.
Trinesha: And this is him?
David: But uh-- yeah, that's him.
Mitchell: Wow!
David: That's him as a young man.
- Yesterday we actually got to meet David's father, John, and we got to hear firsthand about his military experience.
David: That photo, uh, is a photo of, uh, my father's gun crew.
The whole story's in there.
But I mean, basically my dad ended up being the one who shot down this kamikaze that landed 30 feet off the starboard bow and saved the ship and crew and the history of what became the US-- the greatest battleship in Pacific War history.
Mitchell: Wow.
- It is, it is absolutely mad.
I cannot wait to dive in and read it.

- "Team Blue will be traveling to Tucker, Georgia."
- Oh wow.
- "Team Black will be traveling to St. Louis, Missouri."
- Mm-mm!

- "And Team Green will be traveling to Bedford, Pennsylvania."
- Oh.
- "Your time starts now."
- [chuckles] Well, thank you for breakfast, guys.
- Oh, quickly!

All: [laugh] - Bacon!

Callie: [laughs] Patrick: You're lucky I don't steal that from you.

Trinesha: Well, we gotta go.

Taquida: We, we need to look at the map.
Callie: Let's look at a map quick because we are buried here.
Mitchell: It was nice meeting you, sir.

David: Fantastic.
Geselle: I think if we go back up-- Taquida: Okay.
Geselle: on 98 and we hit back on 10th-- Taquida: Okay.
- then we can go straight into-- All: Biloxi.
Callie: 64 straight over.
Patrick: All right.
Peter: Oh there you go, 64.
Patrick: Works for me!
We are going to St. Louis, Missouri.
Callie: I love St. Louis!
And it, it shouldn't be that bad of a trip.
Patrick: No.
That's why she's the navigator, though.
She's feelin' more comfortable.
I just follow instructions.
Andy: We love you!
Erinn and Daughter: Love you too!
David: Get your stuff.
Mitchell: [grunts] Trinesha: Let's go.
Geselle: It's very hard to say goodbye to a sister, but I'm not saying goodbye, I'm saying see you later.
[car door clicks] Callie: Mmm.
Peter: All right.
Callie: Thank you so much.
Peter: Absolutely.
Callie: Can't wait to see you again.
♪ Mitchell: Let's go.

♪ Andy: 68 over to 326 on the lake, 326 out.
Dan: Before hitting the road, Team Green, Andy and Lizzy, take a moment to review their maps.
They're leaving Morgantown, West Virginia and making their way to Bedford, Pennsylvania with an allotted time of 2 hours and 11 minutes.
Andy: We made a decision, uh, after Day 1 that slow and steady is going to win this race.
We're off, baby, to Bedford!
Can I get a what, what?
- What?
- [laughs] ♪ Patrick: Um, I don't know, should we just go straight?
'Cause it looks like there's some stuff up there.
- Yeah.
- 'Cause here's Virginia if you want it, or else we can go straight.
- Uh, tch, tch, tch, tch, tchh... Patrick: Eh, well, we're goin' straight.
That's okay.
♪ Dan: Unsure of where they're really headed, Team Black, Patrick and Callie, are navigating from Evansville, Indiana to St. Louis, Missouri.
They have an allotted time of 2 hours and 57 minutes.
Callie: Now take a left out of Virginia.
- Oh, a left?
Okay.
- Yeah, because we were gonna take a right out of Virginia so now we're going to take a left out of Virginia.
Patrick: Okay, gotcha.
Gotcha, gotcha.
- [slapping] Start listening to me!
Patrick: Mm-hm.
Callie: Start-- are you kidding me?!
Patrick: [snorts] ♪ Geselle: [sing-song] Bye Pensacola!
Where are we going?
We believe, and we gonna trust the map-- [laughs] and believe that this is gonna be a smooth transition getting out of town.
Dan: Following their gut, Team Red, Geselle and Taquida, will be making their way from Pensacola, Florida to Biloxi, Mississippi.
Their allotted time for the day is 2 hours and 13 minutes.
Geselle: Mississippi, here we come.
- Ask him, ask him.
Trinesha: 'Scuse me!
Hey, I'm trying to get to 138 East, is this the right way?
Turn around and go back that way?
[honking] Okay.
- We gotta go.
Trinesha: Thank you!
- 'Cause we gotta turn around.
Dan: Missing their turn and fortunately getting directions to put them right back on track, Team Blue, Mitchell and Trinesha, are leaving Fayetteville, Georgia and heading to Tucker.
They have an allotted time of 1 hour and 9 minutes.
Mitchell: Look at signs, looking at signs, we're good.
We're cruisin'.
Remember, stay the course.
[breathes deeply] Let's just breathe.
You got this.
♪ Dan: All four teams are on the road, navigating their way to their next destination cities.
However, Team Black seems to be having a bit of trouble.
- We have to get on 66 in order for us to get to the other-- to 64.
- Yeah, but I mean, what we had was this way up and then... - Yeah, Patrick, I understand that.
- Uh-huh.
Callie: But there's no 64 on this map!
We had our route planned out this morning, but since I couldn't find it on the map, I decided that we should go another way.
- But I mean when we got-- - I'm done talkin' about it!
I'm done talkin' about it!
Patrick: [chuckles] All right.
We'll be fine.
Callie: He had me worried that we were goin' the wrong way, so I decided to check the maps and we definitely should have gone with our original plan.
Whip it around.
- Why?
Callie: Whip it around!
Don't ask why!
Just whip it around!
Go 62 East to 64.
Patrick: All right.
Yeah, Callie's pretty direct and so-- but for me, I just sorta am used to it so it doesn't really bother me and stuff like that and I just think it helps things actually keep moving, actually.
- There.
Now we're fine.
- All right.
See, the problem is I have no idea you, you changed the route.
That's why I'm just-- I don't know what's going on.
- Patrick, the route-- [sighs] - All right.
We're done with it.
We're past it.
We're movin' forward.
♪ Geselle: So I said "Hey everybody!
Hope you guys are doing amazing today."
So we gotta send a text out to everybody.
Just a way to encourage and, and to, to let them know that they're not in this alone.
- Red Team... And now we have our video.

Patrick: All right, cool, cool, cool!

Andy: Let's go!

♪ Go ahead and rip that open, bebes.
Mitchell: Let's do this.
Lizzy: "Welcome to your challenge for Day 3 of Relative Race."
Callie: "This is Piñata Pulldown!"
Dan: [Western accent] The challenge for Day 3 is Piñata Pulldown.
Our sheriffs-- [coughs] um, contestants-- must lasso three piñatas.
They have three tries before they must rotate.
Once they've lassoed a piñata and pulled it down, one teammate must choose their tool of destruction before they mask up.
Now blindfolded, their teammate will guide them over to the piñata to whack away.
They must break open the piñata and retrieve the sheriff's star inside.
Collect all three sheriff's stars, place them in the designated area, and this challenge is done.
Andy: 'Kay-- Lizzy: All right-- Both: let's go.
Trinesha: All right.
Patrick: Ooh, what do we got here?
Callie: Okay.
[Western music] [phone dings] [record scratch] - Oh!
Hey, we got a, a text.
Oh, it's from Dan.
It's about the Leg Up benefit.
Lizzy: Oh.
- Hey guys!
Congratulations on your win!
And with that win, here is your Leg Up for today's challenge.
Instead of trying to lasso those piñatas from ten feet out, you get to move your mat to eight feet.
So grab your tape measure, move that mat up, and let that lasso fly.

Lizzy: Okay.
Andy: 'Kay, let's do this.
Uh, eight feet.
So... Lizzy: So there's ten, where's eight?
Andy: Eight's right there.
Lizzy: So before we begin the challenge, we pull those mats up two feet.
[whistle blows] Trinesha: I wanna see you demonstrate it.
Mitchell: Oh yeah.

- Oh, this is a little harder than what we thought.
Andy: You got this, bebes.
- I actually have experience with a lasso.
Let's see here.
I worked at a dude ranch.
Andy: Oh, nice try, nice try, nice try.
Patrick: All righty here, cowgirl.
Let's get this.
- There was no experience with a lasso.
We fought.
We were not friends.
Patrick: You were super close right there.
Callie: I know.
Mitchell: I need a little length on it.
[rustling] Ooh!

Trinesha: Go up a little bit higher.
Mitchell: I got you.
Geselle: Come on.
It's kinda like a hula hoop look like.
- Yeah, but when it goes... Yeah, it just didn't work like we thought it was gonna work.
[whooshing] Trinesha: There you go, pull it down.
Mitchell: Let's go.

Trinesha: I was the first one to get the blindfold and attempt to start to hit the piñata in hopes to find the star.
Mitchell: Keep goin'.

Trinesha: I actually chose a pickaxe first because I kinda imagined that would be the quickest one to poke a hole in it so... Mitchell: Right.
- And s-- and definitely I think it got us off to a great first start.
[thwacking] Mitchell: Perfect.

Andy: Oh, oh!

♪ Patrick: Hi-yah!
Callie: Oh, there we go!
Patrick: Callie goes and gets the blindfold and everything and then we gotta go into guide mode after I just knocked it down.
Lizzy: Slowly to your right a little bit.

You got it tangled.
- Actually it was a lot of fun, I'm not gonna lie.
Lizzy: Yes!

Trinesha: I was just getting so frustrated because I'm giving it my all and I'm trying to hit it.
Mitchell: Turn to your right.

Trinesha: 'Cause I want to hit it but it's also the directions have to be somewhat correct.

- I did a very good job at the beatdown on the ground.

Lizzy: Yes, oh!

- There's a little frustration that sets in, a little aggravation.
But we have to keep each other motivated and stay communicating through the process.
Taquida: We gotta figure out a way to try to get this on top.
Mitchell: You got it.

Trinesha: [groans] Callie: Oh, it hit me.
[groans] Lizzy: Yes!

Trinesha: And you gotta go hit.

Callie: Quickly!
[clapping] [thwacking] Trinesha: Right there, you can feel it.

Trinesha: Stop.

Trinesha: Right there.

[intense music] [dinging] Andy: All right!
Trinesha: [groans] Mitchell: That was way harder than I thought it was going to be.
Andy: See-- let's see where we're going.
Trinesha: Okay.
- "Your relative at 482..." - "You will find your relative at..." Both: "1275 Autumnhill Lane."
- "Hopewell, Pennsylvania."
- All right, Hopewell.
- Let's do this.
- All right, let's go.
We're out.
♪ Callie: [grunts] Yep.
Taquida: I'm pullin' this down this time.
I'm gettin' mad at ya.
Geselle: Come on.
You got this.
Taquida: You got it.
Wrap it around it.
[whooshing] Patrick: You got it, you got it, you got it!
Just yank it good, yank it goo-- Callie: [grunts] Patrick: Ohhhh.
It's over there.
[buzzer] Ah, that's what I figured.
[whoosh] Geselle: [breathing heavily] Patrick: Well, that went about as good as planned.
We got two of 'em, though!
- Not our day.
- Not our day.
- I know, I just want something, like, to go really, really well for us.
Taquida: Yeah, it's a little bit harder than what we thought.
Doin' the entire challenge and not gettin' anything was very frustrating.
I don't like the way that feels.
♪ Callie: All right.
[tearing] Callie: [laughing] - It's not wanting-- oh!
Give it to me.
- "You will find your relative at 1016 2nd Street..." Patrick: Why do I always... Callie: This is ridiculous.
[laughing] Patrick: [grunts] Both: Let's go.
- "You will find your relative at 1301 McCausland Avenue, St. Louis, Missouri."
Both: All right, let's go.
♪ Callie: To your family's house!
Patrick: Onward!
Callie: Onward!
Dan: After completing the challenge, it's back on the road, this time racing to find their relatives.
Callie: Okay, go out here and take a left.
- Mkay.
- Streets run east and west and avenues run north and south, so I think we need to be goin' back the other way.
Geselle: Okay.
- I guess just keep going on here until we get to Hopewell.
- Yep.
- And then we'll try to find a person to ask for directions.
Mitchell: Gas station right here.
Pull in right here.
We're not taking any chances today, so the first gas station we see, we're immediately stoppin' and askin' for directions.
- I think you should take a left.
- Roll the dice?
All right, we shall roll the dice.
Taquida: The numbers are goin' up this way... Geselle: Okay.
- So I think if we go back down... - So the numbers will go down?
- Yes, 'cause that was 21st, 20th, and this is 19th.
- We realized we on the grid and we just passed 19th.
So you was right, the numbers are goin' down, so let's just keep straight.
Taquida: We're hopin' that this relative is easy to find.
Geselle: We lookin' for 1016 2nd Street.
Taquida: 2nd Street, okay.
- It looks like on the map that Hopewell's really, really tiny, like it's tiny.
We're definitely gonna have to find somebody to ask for directions... unless it's so tiny that Langdon's Drive is obvious.
- Yeah.
We'll wing it when we get there, I guess.
Mitchell: Thank you so much, have a great day.

They seem fairly confident with where this road is.

Geselle: It's probably a couple of blocks up.
Taquida: Okay.

Trinesha: And then what's after Memorial Drive?
- Nothin'.
It just says miles.
We shouldn't miss it apparently.
Lizzy: It said Hopewell was this way and so we're following it and we're hoping well.
Geselle: 'Kay, that's 15.
Taquida: Okay.
- Good job, we goin' down!
- 1544... Callie: No.
Patrick: All right, so be on the lookout.
Callie: 1301.
It'll be on this side of the street.
- Okay.
Lizzy: Langdon.
Oh my gosh.
[gasps] Oh my gosh!
I cannot believe we've happened across-- - It is Langdon Drive.
- It Lang-- We really expected this to be a hard address to find.
I don't know wha-- I-- wha-- uh-- [laughs] And we were shocked when we just happened to see the exact street.
♪ Andy: 'Kay, so what number are we lookin' for?
Both: 482.
♪ - I see a house.
- 'Kay.
Lizzy: And I think it's the only house.
Oh, it says it.
Andy: 'Kay.
♪ [ticking] Andy: I think we're here!
Lizzy: You ready?
Andy: Yep, let's do this.

Woman 1: Welcome to Bedford County, Pennsylvania!
Andy: Well, thank you.
I'm Andy and this is Lizzy, and... - I am Susan, a cousin-- Andy: Okay.
- on your dad's side.
Andy: Oh my gosh!
It's so good to meet you!
Susan: Good-- wonderful to meet you!
This is my dad, Guy.

Uh, I got incredibly emotional just because I knew how much it meant to my brother.

When she came toward me, all I could see was our future together.

It was one of those emotions that had been buried so deep for such a long time it, it ju-- it just flowed out of me, and I was overwhelmed, I was joyful.
I, I now had an answer that I didn't even really know I needed.

- My cousin Susan pulls out a family tree and it's kind of amazing to me because I never realized how much family we had, especially right there in Pennsylvania.

And then these are the other children that they, that they had.

Lizzy: So you're one of how many kids?

Susan: and then down to myself and my four siblings.

- And then, of course, then we have you.
Andy: That's amazing.

It's amazing to see these names and where I am in connection to it all, and just, I really feel like I'm part of something big.
♪ Susan: Well, if you'd like, it is not snowing out.
Andy: [chuckles] Susan: The cemetery that they're buried in is not too far from here-- Both: Oh really?
Susan: so we could take you for a little ride.
- I would love that.

- Guy and Susie took us to the actual gravesite of my great-great-grandfather and great-great-grandmother and we actually got to see where they were laid to rest.
Andy: Oh wow!

This was, uh, your great-great-grandfather and great-grandmo-- grandmother-- Andy: Mm-hm.

- They were at the very top of that family tree.

Andy: Everything sprang from there.

Andy: To 1953 and 1943.

- This is where we all came from.

- Having the ability to actually stand where my great-great-grandparents were buried was extremely surreal but incredibly gratifying and incredibly meaningful and powerful.

Keshanna: [laughs] - I can definitely see some similarities.
I also wear glasses.
- Oh, do ya?
Taquida: Yeah.

- And what's your mom's name?
- Rosa Maria Johnson is her name.
Keshanna: Yeah, she's a Johnson too.

- And my mama's name is Edith Yvette Johnson.

- Would you like to see pictures of my mother?

- This is when she was younger.

- I don't remember what grade she was in.

Keshanna: All right, so-- and I love this picture.
And then this my sister, my, my older sister, Kesha.

Keshanna: And this is my mom in the middle.

Keshanna: And that's-- this is me.

[laughs] Taquida: They have-- well, you have 'em too, the rosy cheeks, yeah.
My mom definitely has rosy cheeks.
Both: [laugh] I saw pictures of her mom and it reminded me of my mom.
We can see that they have some similarities, so I think them getting to know each other is, um, is gonna be amazing.
We're definitely gonna be there to see it.
And, um, but I think that may be something that they both need.
- I got excited, wanted to get something for you.
Taquida: [laughs] Keshanna: I wanted you to open this one first.
Taquida: Okay.
Keshanna: So... [laughs] [rustling] That is our grandfather.
Taquida: Oh!
Keshanna: [laughs] I was, like, so excited because I wanted you to have-- Taquida: Oh wow!
Keshanna: a picture of our grandfather.
Taquida: I've never seen a picture of him.
Keshanna: [chuckles] - My mother was taken away from my grandfather at a very young age, um, so we never knew anything about that side of the family.
So, uh, seeing a picture of him was something that was new to me.
Only thing we knew was his name.
- Oh, wow.
[chuckles] - Yeah.
I'm not even sure how many pictures my mom have seen-- - Oh wow.
Taquida: of him.
Yeah.
Um, do you know how he passed?
- Uh, a heart attack.
- Okay.
I guess my heart hurts, like I said, more so for my mom because she didn't have her dad and... [emotional] I think that's what she needed and I think that's what she has been missing all of her life and I think that's part of the reasons why she's had some struggles that she has had in life because she didn't have her dad.
And, um, seeing that picture is like, I wish that she would've been able to experience yes, my grandfather, um, but I wish she would've been able to experience it more, um, and just havin' him there.
♪ Keshanna: I'm just grateful, you know, and this is helping me.
[sniffs] [emotional] Finding you has been a r-- like, it's, it's helping with my identity.
- Right, it's okay.
You can cry.

Both: [crying] - I realized that it meant a lot to her, um, to find family.
It's kind of like we've been on the same journey of findin' family.
- I've been in a struggle to finding out who I am.
- Right.
Keshanna: Not just on my mother's side, but on my dad's side.
Taquida: Yeah.
- I'm grateful for the opportunity.
This is huge for me.
It was my heart's desire.
It was my heart's desire.
Like, okay God, You did this for me, did this for my family.
[sniffs] And now, okay, I'm just happy.

- Another one of my biggest fears was what happened when I was-- around the time when I was born.
Was it that he didn't wanna be there?
What was the situation, or did he not wanna be a part of my life?
- I wanna say one thing.
Um, that day, I said, that's my baby right there.
Gwen: Yes, he did.
Trinesha: I found out that he, he did know about me when I-- when I was born.
And unfortunately, I was taken away from him and he no longer had any contact with my birth mother.
- You, you can't do nothin' whenever your, your baby mama take the baby from you and they go to Cali-- you can't do that!
What am-- what am-- what am I finna do?
She said the baby was not mine, and, and, and she left and I never seen the baby no more.
But I kept feelin' your heart.
I just felt the feelin' that that's my baby!
- I know now some information that I did not know yesterday and that truly gives me a peace of mind moving forward.
This journey for me has been so important and so... healing.
I'm, I'm so blessed, and I'm so glad I actually, um, chose to do this because honestly with-without this experience, it-- prob-- I, I don't even know how I would've gotten here.
I'm so thankful.
And thank you for agreein' to meet me.
[emotional] It means so much to me.
I am so much more relieved that I now know the answers, good or bad, and I'm-- I can move forward positively and just look ahead for the future.
- I am grateful and I am happy and I am excited.

The minute she met them, they all embraced her like she's been there the whole time.

And she's just gaining more and more family.

I mean, it has just been, it's just been crazy.
Um, I just think the, the thing that really got me, I mean, obviously I figured is everyone definitely looks alike.

- Oh, I can tell you for a fact that it's like night and day as far as yesterday to today 'cause I was lucky enough to meet my cousin, Susie, and her father, Guy.
This is Susie and Guy.
They are from here in Pennsylvania and they are the most beautiful people that I have met in a long, long time.
- And this is on your father's side of your family?
Andy: Correct, yes.
And they have been so welcoming and so kind.
- You know, you just met your cousin, and yet as I look at the three of you right now, it's like you've known each other for decades.
You just kinda feel like, oh yeah, they've known each other forever.
