>> SO BRANDON, WE ARE FEATURING SOME OF THE INDIANA'S FINEST ART MUSEUMS OVER THE NEXT FEW EPISODES AND WE'RE STARTING RIGHT HERE IN THE SUMMIT CITY.
THE FORT WAYNE MUSEUM OF ART IS A REGIONAL MUSEUM WITH A FOCUS ON AMERICAN ART FROM THE 19th 19th CENTURY TO THE PRESENT.
LOCATED IN DOWNTOWN FORT WAYNE, THE MUSEUM IS HOME TO THE PARADIGM GALLERY SHOP WHICH FEATURES THE ORIGINAL ARTS AND CRAFTS OF OVER 75 REGIONAL AND NATIONAL ARTISTS AND WE WILL LEARN ALL ABOUT THAT IN JUST A BIT, BUT FIRST, WE ARE HEADED TO INDIANAPOLIS TO LEARN ALL ABOUT A PIECE OF FURNITURE THAT'S A WORK OF ART IN ITS OWN RIGHT.

>> WELL, I THINK THE PHRASE THAT SUMS IT UP IS THE ADVERTISING PHRASE WHICH IS A PLACE FOR EVERYTHING, AND EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE.
AND THE IDEA WAS THAT THE SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSMAN COULD HAVE EVERYTHING WITHIN REACH, SITTING AT HIS DESK, EVERYTHING WAS RIGHT THERE.
>> ALL OF THAT, THANKS TO A REMARKABLE PIECE OF FURNITURE, MANUFACTURED BY INDIANA'S OWN WOOTEN DESK COMPANY.
>> THEY WERE PART OF A LARGER MOVEMENT TOWARDS WHAT IS CALLED PATENT FURNITURE.
IF YOU HAD A PATENT, NOT ONLY DID THAT PROWILL TECT YOUR PROPERTY LEGALLY -- PROTECT YOUR PROPERTY LEGALLY BUT IT SIGNALED TO THE PUBLIC THAT THIS WAS SOMETHING THAT WAS NEW.
IT WAS THE LATEST, AND IT REALLY WAS A MODERN DEVICE.
>> BY 1874, WILLIAM WOOTEN HAD TWO PATENTED DESK DESIGNS.
ONE WAS THE ROTARY DESK, BUT THE ONE THAT MADE THE COMPANY'S NAME WAS THE TALL, DROP-FRONT MODEL OFFICIALLY TITLED WOOTEN PATENT CABINET OFFICE SECRETARY, A HIT AT THE 1876 PHILADELPHIA CENTENNIAL EXPOSITION, THE DESK WAS SOON BEING ADVERTISED UNDER A DECIDEDLY MORE MARKETABLE MONIKER.
>> THE KING OF DESK WAS PROBABLY THE OTHER SLOGAN YOU SEE THE MOST.
YOU DO HAVE SOME COMPETITORS COMING UP WITH THE QUEEN OF DESKS, WHICH IS END COO OF -- IS KIND OF INTERESTING.
QUITE A FEW PROMINENT PEOPLE HAD THEM, ROCKEFELLER.
THEY ARE NOT PURCHASING THEM BECAUSE THAT'S THE MOST EFFICIENT WAY TO RUN THEIR GIANT ENTERPRISES.
IT SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR TASTE.
IT SAYS SOMETHING ABOUT YOUR IMPORTANCE AND THAT YOU ARE HERE TO STAY AND THAT YOU HAVE THIS LEVEL OF PRESTIGE.
>> BUT THEY CERTAINLY WITH RESPECT ALL SHOW.
THE COMPARTMENTS MORE THAN 100 IN ALL, SERVED A BIGGER PURPOSE.
>> WE HAVE QUARTERMASTER DESKS HERE IN THE COLLECTION, SOME OF WHICH ARE QUITE QUITE CRUDE, ALMOST LIKE FRUIT CRATE.
IT'S SIZED FOR THE WAY THAT DOCUMENTS WERE FOLDED AND LABELED AND FILED.
>> THE WOOTEN, ALTHOUGH MUCH MORE ELABORATE WAS REALLY NO DIFFERENT.
>> THAT MAY LOOK A LITTLE QUAINT TO US TODAY, BUT THAT REALLY WAS THE STANDARD FOR FILING AND ORGANIZATION IN AN OFFICE AT THE TIME.
THEY ACTUALLY MADE A LADY'S VERSION AS WELL THAT IT WAS FOR HER TO RUN HER HOME.
AGAIN, WITH THOSE VICTORIAN VIRTUES OF EFFICIENCY AND ORGANIZATION.
REALLY THE LAST DESKS ARE PROBABLY PRODUCED ABOUT 1897.
BY THEN, THE WHOLE WAY THAT FILING TAKES PLACE, THE WHOLE ORGANIZATION OF THE OFFICE ARE CHANGING.
SO THEY JUST ESSENTIALLY OUTLIVED BOTH THEIR USEFULNESS AND THEIR STYLISHNESS.
♪ >> WE HAVE SEVERAL WOOTEN DESKS IN THE COLLECTION.
OUR DESKS ARE FROM THE PERIOD WHEN THE COMPANY WAS IN INDIANAPOLIS, AND THEN WE HAVE A LADIES SECRETARY WHICH IS MUCH RARER, AND IT HAS LIGHTER WOODS.
THEY ALL HAVE A COMBINATION OF, YOU KNOW, USUALLY WALNUT BECAUSE THEY WERE ALSO MAKE IN OAK WITH FURLED WOOD PANELS, VERY TYPICAL OF THE RENAISSANCE REVIVAL DESIGN THAT IS AT THE HEART OF THE WOOTEN DESK DESIGN.
ON VIEW IN OUR SECOND FLOOR GALLERY, WE HAVE WHAT IS SOMETIMES KNOWN AS THE WAYNE GRIFFIN DESK, WHICH IS A SUPERIOR GRADE, AND THERE ARE ONLY A HANDFUL OF SUE SUPERIOR GRADE WOOTEN DESKS.
IT APPEARS IN THE 1868 CATALOG AND LOOKS LIKE AN EXPOSITION PIECE.
IT WAS MEANT TO DEMONSTRATE THE EXTREMELY HIGH QUALITY OF WORK THAT COULD BE DONE SHOULD YOU CHOOSE TO PAY FOR IT.
WE HAVE SEVERAL WHAT WE CALL CENTERS OF EXCELLENCE, THOSE ARE AREAS WHERE WE HAVE PARTICULAR DEPTHS IN THE COLLECTION AND IN OUR EXPERTISE, AND ONE OF THOSE IS INDIANA INNOVATION AND INDUSTRY AND AGRICULTURE.
ESPECIALLY REFLECTING THAT POST-CIVIL WAR PERIOD AND THE WOOTEN DESKS ARE SUCH A GREAT EXAMPLE OF THAT, AS WELL AS, AGAIN THIS WHOLE SURROUND OF OTHER MANUFACTURERS WHO WERE WORKING, TRYING TO FIGURE OUT THE SAME KINDS OF QUESTIONS, AND REALLY WERE QUITE POPULAR AND QUITE VISIBLE FOR THEIR TIME.
SO THERE ARE A LOT OF THINGS THAT WE CAN LEARN FROM THE DESKS, A LOT OF GREAT STORIES FROM THE WHOLE INNOVATION AND MANUFACTURING TO JUST WHAT IT SAYS ABOUT HOW BUSINESSES WERE RUN AND WHAT PEOPLE VALUED.

>> WELL, THIS PLACE IS ABOUT CHANGE FIRST AND FOREMOST.
AND I MEAN THAT VERY SPECIFICALLY IN THE SENSE THAT IF YOU THINK OF A MUSEUM, IT'S NOT CHANGE.
THE COLLECTION IS OUT, AND YOU MAYBE HAVE ONE SHOW A YEAR, TWO SHOWS A YEAR CHANGE.
WE CHANGE 26 SHOWS A YEAR, AND 9 ONLY THING THAT'S ALWAYS OUT -- AND THE ONLY THING THAT'S ALWAYS OUT IS OUR GLASS COLLECTION.
THE DAYWOOD COLLECTION IS A WONDERFUL STORY.
IN THIS EXHIBIT, YOU WILL FIND EVERY MAJOR NAME OF AN AMERICAN IMPRESSIONIST ON THE WALL.
IT'S LIKE GOING THROUGH A TEXTBOOK, REALLY AND THAT'S HOW THEY CURATED THE SHOW TO PRESENT THE FIRST TIME TO US.
SO ALL OF YOUR BIG NAMES ARE THERE.
AND ALSO, SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE SCENES THAT YOU MAY HAVE SEEN IN A BOOK ON AMERICAN IMPRESSIONISM PRIOR TO VISITING US.
THIS SHH WORK BY DALE ENUX WHO COINCIDENTALLY ENOUGH GREW UP HERE AND TRAINED AT THE FORT WAYNE ART SCHOOL WHICH USED TO BE THE BASIS FOR THE MUSEUM.
ALL THE WORK FOR THE SHOW WAS CREATED NEW.
HE WORKS IN LIMESTONE, STEEL.
HE HAD SOME EXTRAORDINARY METAL PIECES THAT ARE CUT WITH ELABORATE PATTERNS AND THEN THEY ARE FOUR OR FIVE LAYERS DEEP.
SOME SMALL, SOME FREE STANDING, AND WE GOT SO EXCITED ABOUT THAT WORK, WE ARE COMMISSIONING HIM TO DO A 17-FOOT PIECE FOR THE FRONT LAWN IN CELEBRATION OF OUR 100th ANNIVERSARY AS A MUSEUM.
ONE OF THE SHOWS THAT WILL BE UP THE ENTIRE YEAR WILL BE A SHOW ABOUT THE COLLECTION MANY COLLECTION DECADE BY DECADE, WHAT ARE THE HIGHLIGHTS THAT WE EITHER ACQUIRED BY GIFT OR ACQUIRED BY PURCHASE.
AND SO CERTAINLY NOT ALL OF THE COLLECTION WILL BE OUT IN A YEAR, BECAUSE WE HAVE GONE FROM HAVING 13 PIECES TO HAVE A 1,000 PIECES, BUT A LOT OF THE COLLECTION WILL BE OUT FOR PEOPLE.
ALL THE FAVORITES AND ALL THE SPECIAL THINGS THAT SOMETIMES DON'T SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY AS MUCH AS THEY SHOULD.

ALREADY ♪ ♪ >> MODOCK BEGAN NOVEMBER 11th, 1942, WHEN TERRYL JACOBS, THE OWNER OF THE GREAT AMERICAN CIRCUS, BROUGHT HIS CIRCUS TO WABASH HIGH SCHOOL, HE BROUGHT HIS CREW OF ANIMALS AND ALONG WITH THAT CAME THREE ELEPHANTS.
EMPRESS, JUDY, AND MODOCK.
♪ AND THESE THREE ELEPHANTS WERE TIED UP OUTSIDE THE HIGH SCHOOL.
WHEN WALTER SLIMMERS DOGS CAME AND STARTED BARKING AT THESE THREE ELEPHANTS AND THEY THREW UP THEIR TETHERS AND BROKE LOOSE.
NOW, EMPRESS AND JUDY WERE GOOD GIRLS AND THEY JUST MEANDERS DOWN IN THE FRONT LAWN OF THE HIGH SCHOOL, BUT MODOCK, SHE HAD DIFFERENT THINGS IN MIND.
AND SHE TOOK OFF FOR DOWNTOWN.
♪ ♪ >> THE FIRST PLACE SHE CAME WAS MRS. H.W.
REED'S HOUSE, AND SHE HAD PUT TWO APPLE PIES OUT ON HER WINDOWSILL FOR COOLING AND MODOCK CAME BY ANDATE AND ATE BOTH OF THOSE APPLE PIES.
SHE CAME TO DOWNTOWN WABASH, AND SHE CAME UP TO THE HOTEL BEHIND ME, THE INDIANA HOTEL, AND STANDING THERE WERE TWO BOYS, JERRY McVICKER AND GERALD.
AND GERALD JUST BOUGHT A BAG OF PENNY CANDY.
THOSE BOY POOR BOYS, THEIR KNEES WERE BANGING TOGETHER.
THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.
AND GERALD HANDED OUT THAT BAG OF CANDY AND JUST LIKE THOSE APPLE PIES, MODOCK TOOK THAT BAG...
BAG AND ALL, RIGHT DOWN THE OLD HATCH!
[ CHUCKLES ] MRS. CHAUNCEY KESSLER HAD COME FROM THE TELEPHONE COMPANY, AND SHE WAS GOING TO THE BRADLEY BROTHERS DRUGSTORE WHERE WE SIT HERE TODAY.
OF MODOCK FOLLOWED HER TO THE FRONT DOOR OF THE BRADLEY BROTHERS DRUGSTORE AND WHEN MRS. KESSLER OPENED UP THAT FRONT DOOR, OUT CAME THE AROMA EVERY ELEPHANT DREAMS OF, THE SMELL OF ROASTING PEANUTS!
MODOCK CRASHED THROUGH THAT FRONT DOOR, WENT INSIDE, KNOCKED OVER THE PEANUT ROASTER, SCARFED UP ALL THE PEANUTS AND KNOCKED OVER THE SODA FOUNTAIN AND MADE A MESS OF THE WHOLE STORE!
AND THEN SHE WENT OUT THE BACK DOOR, CRASHED OUT THE BACK DOOR, AND KNOCKED EZRA LaSALLE INTO THE GUTTER OF THE STREET.
MODOCK HEADED ACROSS THE STREET TO THE UNION CIGAR STORE, AND SHE POKED HER HEAD IN THE FRONT DOOR.
NOW, THE UNION SI GARR CIGAR STORE WAS NOT ALL ABOUT IS CIGAR.
IT WAS A TAVERN.
ONE OLD BOY TURNED TO THE OTHER AND SAID, THAT'S THE LAST DRINK I'M EVER GONNA TAKE!
[ LAUGHTER ] ♪ ♪ >> THE STARRIES STORIES STARTED HITTING HEAD LINES AND IT HIT NEWSPAPERS ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES.
SHE RAMPAGED ACROSS WABASH COUNTY AND HUNTINGTON COUNTY ON A SEARCH FOR BETTER THINGS.
AND SO ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON, MODOCK WAS OUT IN A FIELD NORTH OF MOUNT ETNA, INDIANA.
THEY TRIED TO LURE MODOCK, MODOCK DURING THAT FIVE DAYS HAD LOST 800 POUNDS AND THE SHERIFF OF HUNTINGTON COUNTY BROUGHT OUT A TRUCKLOAD OF BREAD TO FEED THE ELEPHANT.
MODOCK WAS OUT IN THE FIELD.
THE OTHER ELEPHANT, EMPRESS WAS OUT, THERE THE LOAVES OF BREAD WERE OUT THERE AND SLOWLY MODOCK STARTED TO EAT THAT BREAD AND WORK HER WAY BACK TO HER WAGON, AND WHEN MODOCK GOT ON TO THAT WAGON, THE ELEPHANT OWNER FED HER 30 GALLONS OF WATER AND SIX QUARTS OF WHISKEY TO SETTLE HER NERVES DON'T YOU KNOW?
[ CHUCKLES ] ♪ MY WIFE ANGIE HAD WRITTEN A PAPER ABOUT MODOCK.
>> IRONICALLY, I WAS WORKING ON MY MASTER'S THESIS AT MANCHESTER UNIVERSITY FOR A FOURTH GRAD CLASS AND IT WAS ON WABASH COUNTY HISTORY.
AND 30 YEARS AGO, I WROTE A PIECE ABOUT MODOCK'S MARKET.
>> SHE CAME UP WITH THE IDEA OF THIS NAME FOR HAD COFFEE STORE TO BE MODOCK'S MARKET.
>> WHO WOULD HAVE KNOWN THAT THAT MANY YEARS FORWARD WE WOULD HAVE A STORE CALLED MODOCK'S.
WE ARE NOT EVEN COFFEE DRINKERS.
I WAS NOT A COFFEE DRINKER AND I THOUGHT, WHY DON'T WE JUST TRY THAT?
I ALWAYS KNEW THAT MODOCK'S WAS HERE AND I KNEW THAT MODOCK WAS AN ELEPHANT, BUT I DIDN'T KNOW THE DETAILS OF THE STORY.
AND SO I INQUIRED ABOUT THE JOB HERE.
AS I TRAVEL AROUND, I ALWAYS LIKE TO VISIT LOCAL COFFEE SHOPS BUT I HAVE YET TO FIND A COFFEE SHOP THAT'S AS UNIQUE AS MODOCK'S MARKET.

WE MAKE COMMERCIAL ESPRESSO MACHINES THAT ARE A LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT THAN THE STANDARD ONES THAT YOU SEE IN THE CAFES.
♪ >> A FRIEND OF MINE, CORY WALDRON FROM COUNTRY COFFEE SPENT A LOT OF TIME PLAYING MUSIC TOGETHER.
WE REALLY MET THROUGH MUSIC, AND THEN FORMED OUR FRIENDSHIP OUTSIDE OF THAT.
>> I STARTED DOING THESE SKETCHES OF MACHINES.
THEY KIND OF LOOK LIKE SODA FOUNTAINS OR BEER TAPS.
THEY ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO MAKE, REALLY, AND ERIC AND I WERE PLAYING IN A BAND.
SO WE HAD THIS FUNK, JAZZ FUNK BAND THING GOING ON.
♪ >> WHILE WE'RE PLAYING MUSIC, HANGING OUT AFTER, HE KEPT TALKING ABOUT THIS ESPRESSO MACHINE THAT YOU COULD KIND OF SEE THROUGH.
>> FOR SOME REASON, I HAD THIS ZANY IDEA THAT WE COULD MAKE A MACHINE WHERE ALL OF THE INTERNAL COMPONENTS COULD BE SHELVED OUT OF THE WAY FOR THE BUSINESS END OF AN ESPRESSO MACHINE.
THE WHOLE IDEA WAS TO ENHANCE THE INTERACTION BETWEEN A BARISTA AND A CUSTOMER TO ENHANCE THE COFFEE EXPERIENCE.
♪ >> WE HAVE FOUR DIFFERENT PRODUCTS IN THE SHOWROOM HERE.
SO WE HAVE GOT THE NEWEST VERSION OF OUR ESPRESSO MACHINE THAT WE CALLED THE ESPRESSO A.V.
IT'S THE WORK HORSE.
WE HAVE THE ORIGINAL VERSION WHICH IS THE ESPRESSO E.P., IT GIVES US SOME GEEKIER CONTROL OVER HOW THE COFFEE IS EXTRACTED IN TERMS OF WE CAN CREATE A PRESSURE PROFILE WHERE THINGS CHANGE DURING THE COURSE OF THE EXTRACTION.
WE HAVE A UNIT THAT STEAMS THE MILK AND WE ALSO HAVE EQUIPMENT TO MAKE POURED OVER COFFEE, LIKE BREWED COFFEE.
WE CAN PRODUCE UP TO ABOUT 50 MODULES A WEEK.
SO THAT WOULD BE LIKE 50 THINGS BEHIND THE BAR.
AND BECAUSE THE EQUIPMENT IS MODULAR, YOU CAN DO WHATEVER YOU WANT WITH IT.
WE ARE NOT SELLING TO 50 CAFES.
ONE PLACE MAY BUY FOUR THINGS AND ANOTHER PLACE MAY BUY SIX THINGS.
HERE IN FORT WAYNE, WE HAVE CONJURE COFFEES HERE WHICH THE COFOUNDER OF MOD BAR STARTED HIS OWN ROASTERY AND USES OUR EQUIPMENT THERE.
SWEETWATER SOUND HERE AS WELL, BUT WE SPAN MOST OF THE U.S., AND A LOT OF THE MAJOR METROPOLITAN AREAS GLOBALLY AS WELL.
♪ SEEING A LOT OF THE BUILDOUTS WHERE MOD BAR IS INSTALLED STILL GIVES ME THIS HUGE SENSE OF JOY IN THAT WOW, THEY HAVE -- THEY ARE SUPER CREATIVE WITH THIS.
IT LOOKS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING AND PEOPLE LOVE IT.
I CAN'T BE MORE PROUD OF THAT!
♪ IN FORT WAYNE, WE HAVE GOT A DOZEN AT THE FACTORY HERE, BETWEEN ASSEMBLY AND ADMINISTRATION, AND ALL THE ROLES THAT WE HAVE HERE IN FORT WAYNE.
WE HAVE A GREAT TEAM OF PEOPLE HERE.

IT'S ABOUT FEEDING PEOPLE.
IT'S ABOUT COMMUNITY.

AND WE PUT ALL THE PARTS TOGETHER AND WE JUST STOOD BACK AND JUST -- LITERALLY STARTED LAUGHING.
IT'S JUST -- IT'S HILARIOUS.
IT'S SORT OF A COMBINATION OF FRED FLINTSTONE AND STONE HENGE.

I'M HOPING THAT KIDS WILL BE DRAGGING THEIR PARENTS DOWN TO ON THE B LINE TRAIL TO GO CHECK OUT THE HUGE KNIVES AND FORKS.

AND SO HE'S THE ONE THAT CONSTRUCTED THE KNIVES AND THE FORKS.
HE KNOWS METAL INSIDE AND OUT.
>> AND JASON, HE WAS DALE'S RIGHT-HAND MAN, STUDYING ALONGSIDE THE MASTER.
>> AND HAS LEARNED HOW TO DO THE TYPE OF CARVING THAT I DO, AND THE IDIOSYNCRASIES THAT I FIND TO HELP ME PUT THINGS TOGETHER.
>> ESSENTIALLY WHAT WE HAD HERE WAS AN ART FACTORY WHICH I LOVE.
I THINK THAT'S JUST WONDERFUL!

IT'S TAKING ALL OF THESE OTHER PEOPLE TO DO IT AS WELL.
