THE HARRISON CENTER, YOU WILL FIND GALLERIES, STUDIO, PERFORMANCE SPACES AND MUCH MORE.
IT IS A PRETTY REMARKABLE PLACE AND WE WILL LEARN MORE ABOUT IT IN JUST A LITTLE BIT.
FIRST, WE'RE HEADING SOUTH TO MONROE COUNTY TO CHECK OUT ANOTHER REMARKABLE PLACE.
ADAM CARROLL HAS THE STORY BEHIND BLOOMINGTON'S RUSSIAN RECORDING.
>> WHEN I STARTED THE STUDIO, MY GOAL WAS TO PROVIDE SUPER-HIGH-END RECORDING TO BANDS THAT COULDN'T OTHERWISE AFFORD IT.
♪ I WAS CONCEIVED IN RUSSIA AND BORN IN THE STATES, SO FIRST BORN IN THE COUNTRY THEN, YOU KNOW, GROWING UP WAS A BIG PART OF MY IDENTITY, ESPECIALLY GROWING UP IN AN IMMIGRANT HOUSE SPEAKING RUSSIAN AND GOING TO PUBLIC SCHOOL AND BEING CONFUSED BY THE LANGUAGE.
SHORTLY BEFORE I OPENED RUSSIAN RECORDING, I INTERNED AT ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING IN CHICAGO.
THE OWNER IS NOTORIOUSLY HARD TO WIN -- WELL, HE IS JUST THIS STRAIGHT AND I WAS SO NERVOUS, EAGER 20-YEAR-OLD WHO REALLY WANTED HIM TO LIKE ME AND ALL OF THIS STUFF.
FINALLY, WHAT WON HIM OVER WAS WHEN I DID A RUSSIAN ACCENT.
WHEN I WON HIM OVER WITH MY RUSSIAN ACCENT, I REALIZED THAT IS A BIG PART OF MY IDENTITY AND I CELEBRATED IT.
AS SOON AS I GOT BACK FROM MY INTERNSHIP THE FOLLOWING SPRING, I FOUND A SPACE TO OPEN MY STUDIO AND I THOUGHT WHAT AM I GOING TO CALL IT?
I THOUGHT OF RUSSIAN RECORDING.
>> FOR THE NEXT FIVE YEAR, RUSSIAN RECORDING BEGAN RECORDING IN BROWN COUNTY ACROSS FROM THE ABANDONED SKI PARK SKI WORLD OFF OF HIGHWAY 46.
IT IS WHILE WORKING AT I.U.
IN THE 2000'S THAT MIKE RECOGNIZED A BUILDING THAT WAS AVAILABLE.
>> I FOUND THIS PLACE WAS AVAILABLE AND JUST SORT OF FANTASIZED ABOUT BUILDING MY OWN STUDIO WITHIN IT AND I THOUGHT WHAT THE HELL, I WILL TRY TO GET A LOAN TO BUILD THE STUDIO.
I BROUGHT IN A STACK OF RECORDS AND WE'RE BRINGING IN BANDS FROM OUT OF TOWN AND I WANT TO HOST SHOWS HERE.
BLOOMINGTON IS A VIBRANT AND CREATIVE COMMUNITY AND I THINK IT IS AN ASSET TO HAVE THE STUDIO SO CLOSE TO DOWNTOWN.
THEY GAVE IT TO ME.
THEY BELIEVED IN ME.
THIS WAS JUST A GIANT WAREHOUSE WITH WHITE AND UGLY DUCT WORK.
WE BUILT THE STUDIO IN THREE MONTHS, WHICH IS JUST INSANE.
♪ >> I HAD NO INTEREST IN MAKING A BUNCH OF MONEY.
ALL OF THE MONEY I MADE FROM THE STUDIO GOES INTO THE STUDIO TO KEEP MAKING ITS BETTER, IT HAS BEEN AN OBSESSION OF MINE.
20 YEARS LATER, I HAVE MY DREAM STUDIO, STARTING THAT WAY JUST TRYING TO PROVIDE THE SAME SORT OF SOUND QUALITY AND SERVICES THAT STUDIOS COSTING 10 TIMES AS MUCH TO BANDS WAS EXCITING TO ME AND IT WAS EXCITING TO BANDS.
ALSO, I WANTED THE STUDIO TO FEEL SORT OF CREATIVE AND HOMEY AND WE HAVE STUDIO CATS.
IT DOESN'T HAVE THE CLINICAL PROFESSIONAL STUDIO VIBE.
IT ALLOWS PEOPLE WHO HAVE A STRONG CONNECTION TO BLOOMINGTON WHO WORKED AT JACOBS OR PLAYED IN TOWN CAN COME BACK AND I THINK THEY ENJOY BEING BACK IN A TOWN THEY LOVE.
I THINK IT ALLOWS FOR PEOPLE, A LOT OF BANDS THESE DAYS ARE SPREAD OUT.
PEOPLE DON'T ALWAYS LIVE IN THE SAME TOWN, SO IT ALLOWS SOMEONE WHO LIVES IN BLOOMINGTON BUT HAS A BANDMATE IN CHICAGO TO BRING THEM BACK TO WORK ON A PROJECT.
THEY HAVE THE STUDIO EVEN AFTER I'M GONE, THEY CAN PLAY.
THEY CAN JAM.
THEY CAN PRACTICE.
THEY CAN COME ONE PARTS.
WE HAVE TONS OF KEYBOARDS, SYNTHESIZERS, GUITARS.
THEY CAN HAVE AN IDEA DURING THE DAY AND I SAY I HAVE TO GO HOME FOR DINNER AND THEY CAN FLESH OUT THE IDEA, AND IT JUST CREATES LIKE A FULL SUBMERSION SORT OF EXPERIENCE VERSUS, WE HAVE TO GO AND PACKING UP AND LEAVING.
SOME BANDS WILL BOOK A WEEK, TWO WEEKS, SOMETIMES A MONTH AND IS THE NICE TO JUST BE ABLE TO HUNKER DOWN.
♪ >> AS THE STUDIO BEGAN GROWING ITS CLIENTS, IT ALSO BEGAN ADDING DORMITORY AND KITCHEN SPACES AND AN AIR AIRBNB UPSTAIRS.
THEY ALLOWED ANYONE AND ANY PROJECT TO SIT UP IN THE STUDIO.
>> WE ARE ALL INCLUSIVE.
JUST LIKE ANYONE CAN GO INTO KROGER AND BUY ARTICHOKE HEARTS.
ANYONE CAN COME HERE AND RECORD.
A LOT OF STUDIOS FEEL LIKE THEY HAVE AN AESTHETIC OR, YOU KNOW, WORK WITH A SPECIFIC GENRE AND THAT IS FINE.
OBVIOUSLY, FOR ME THERE IS CERTAIN TYPES OF MUSIC I PREFER TO WORK ON, BUT MY GOAL IS TO PROVIDE A SERVICE.
TO ME, IT IS NOT A DECISION.
IT IS MORE OF A DECISION NOT TO AGREE TO RECORD ANYONE THAN IT IS TO RECORD EVERYONE.
THE STUDIO WILL KEEP BEING A PLACE THAT PEOPLE IN TOWN COME TO WHEN THEY HAVE SOMETHING THEY ARE REALLY PROUD OF THAT THEY WANT TO SHARE AND GET OUT.
AND THEN, IF THEY END UP MOVING ON, IT WILL BE A BE A PLACE THEY WANT TO COME BACK TO, START OF THE NETWORK OF PEOPLE AROUND IT WILL CONTINUE TO GROW, NOT OF JUST FOR ME, BUT EVERYONE WHO HAS WORKED HERE, WRITTEN MUSIC HERE, RECORDED HERE TO KEEP COMING BACK TO.

WE'RE HOME TO SEVEN GALLERIES THAT CHANGE ART MONTHLY, SO WE WANT PEOPLE TO COME IN AND EXPERIENCE ART AND GROW AS ART PATRONS, BUT WE WANT INDIANAPOLIS TO BE A PLACE WHERE ARTISTS CAN STAY AND THRIVE.
WE ARE IN THE FORMER PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH BUILDING AND THIS BUILDING WAS THE CHRISTIAN ENDEAVOR ROOM.
SO, THE BUILDING HAS HAD MANY DIFFERENT FORMS OVER THE YEARS, AND IT IS REALLY FUN TO MEET PEOPLE WHO HAVE BEEN A PART OF THIS BUILDING'S STORY AND FIND OUT HOW OUR STORIES ARE STILL CARRYING OUT SOME OF THE ORIGINAL STORY.
EVERY SINGLE MONTH, WE CHANGE SEVEN OF OUR SPACES AND THAT IS INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT WHEN YOU THINK OF ALL OF THE ARTISTS AND ALL OF THE ARTISTS COORDINATE, BUT IT IS WONDERFUL TO SHOW CASE ALL OF THE AMAZING ART IN OUR CITY AND WE HAVE TO CHANGE EVERY MONTH TO KEEP UP WITH DEMAND.

I DID NOT GROW UP STUDYING THE GREATS OF BEETHOVEN, IT WAS JERRY LEE LEWIS.
MY FAMILY AT SOME POINT NOTICED MY INCLINATION THAT ULTIMATELY LED ME FROM ARKANSAS TO INDIANA AND NOW HEAR TO GREENWOOD.
>> YEARS AGO, WHEN DREW FIRST ARRIVED AT THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH THERE WAS AN ISSUE.
>> WE NEEDED A NEW INSTRUMENT.
WE NEEDED A NEW ORGAN.
AS MUCH AS I LOVE A TRADITIONAL PIPE ORGAN, THE PRICE MAKES IT SO INCREDIBLY DIFFICULT.
IT JUST DOESN'T SEEM LIKE THE RIGHT THING TO DO, AT LEAST FOR US.
WE COULDN'T REALLY JUSTIFY THAT EXPENSE WHEN YOU'RE A CHURCH, YOUR OBLIGATION IS NOT TO ENTERTAIN YOURSELF WITH BIG, EXTRAVAGANT, LAVISH THINGS.
FOR US HERE, IT JUST DID NOT -- IT RAISED AN ETHICAL QUESTION.
IT RAISED A MORAL QUESTION.

IT WAS THE BEST SALES PITCH, BECAUSE PEOPLE HEARD THE DIFFERENCE, OH, THAT IS WHAT HE IS ON ABOUT.
OK, LET'S DO THIS THING.

I HAD NO IDEA WHAT TO EXPECT, AND SO JUST SEEING IT WAS THIS SWEET, SMALL TOWN WITH A LOT OF HISTORY, I WAS EXCITED TO HAVE SOME TIME TO JUST LIVE THE COUNTRY LIFE, I GUESS.
I GET TO DRIVE AROUND TO SEE THE BEAUTIFUL CORN GROWING, FIREFLIES.
I HAD NEVER SEEN THOSE BEFORE.
IT IS A FUN EXPERIENCE.

IT HAS A BUNCH OF DIFFERENT PRODUCTS FOR SALE, MISCELLANEOUS BAG OF JEWELRY AND ANTIQUES AND YOU'RE GOING TO COME THROUGH AND I'M THE ONE STANDING AT THE PODIUM.
I SEAT PEOPLE WHEN THEY COME HERE.
A REAL INTIMATE, 145-SEAT HOUSE.
THE INITIAL PART OF THE MEAL, THE SALAD PORTION OF THE MEAL IS FAMILY STYLE, SO THEY BRING THAT OUT TO THE TABLE AND WE HAVE BROCCOLI SALAD THAT IS DISH THAT WE'RE KNOWN FOR.
AND ONCE YOU HAVE HAD A COUPLE OF MINUTES TO EAT THAT, THEY GET THE PLATES OUT OF YOUR WAY AND YOU COME THROUGH THE BUFFET AND THEY DISMISS YOU TABLE BY TABLE AND AT THE END, WE HAVE GOURMET DESSERTS THAT WE OFFER.
WE DO SIX MUSICALS AND THREE PLAYS IN A YEAR.
♪ >> OUR CLIENT CLIENTELE LOVES GOLDEN AGE OF BROADWAY, SO YOU WILL SEE ROGER HAMMERSTEIN OR THINGS OF THAT NATURE.
I HAVE LOCAL AUDITIONS IN JANUARY, BECAUSE I LIKE TO INCORPORATE PEOPLE FROM THE COMMUNITY AS WELL.
I WANT IT TO BE A MIXED BAG OF PEOPLE WHO DO THIS FOR THEIR CAREER, AND ALSO PEOPLE FROM THE COMMUNITY THAT, YOU KNOW, WANT TO DO IT, AND HAVE THAT TALENT, BUT THEY JUST CAN'T GIVE UP THAT PAYCHECK.

THE OTHER ACTORS ARE REALLY KIND AS WELL.

>> EVERYTHING WE DO AROUND HERE, WHETHER IT IS THE GENERAL STORE OR THE FOOD WE MAKE, OR THE BOX OFFICE, OUR DEVOTION IS TO THE CUSTOMER AND MAKING SURE THEY HAVE A FANTASTIC TIME.
THAT CATCHPHRASE THAT DONNA CAME UP FOR THE PLACE, "COME AS A GEST AND LEAVE AS FAMILY" WE MEAN THAT.
>> THEATER IS SUCH A SMALL WORLD.
I KNOW SOME PEOPLE WHO WORK AT THIS THEATER AND THEY KNOW THEY HAVE SUCH HEART FOR THE ART OF MUSICAL THEATER AND IT IS WONDERFUL THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO SUSTAIN FOR 25 YEARS IN SUCH A SMALL COMMUNITY.
IT MUST BE SPECIAL PLACE TO BE.

I HAD A CUSTOM GUITAR BUILT FOR ME IN TENNESSEE.
THAT GUITAR WENT IN THE CASE, IN THE CLOSET, UNDER THE BED, TYPICAL THING WHERE LIFE HAPPENS AND OH, I NEED TO GET MY GUITAR OUT 20 YEARS LATER.
IT'S KIND OF WARPED, BECAUSE YOU ARE TO TAKE TENSION OFF OF THE STRINGS IF YOU STORE A GUITAR FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME.
I STARTED THINKING, MAYBE I CAN FIX IT.
THEN I SAW A MAGAZINE AND THEY WERE TALKING ABOUT LUTIERS AND SUPPLY HOUSES THAT HAD WOODS WHERE YOU CAN BUILD YOUR OWN GUITAR.
MAYBE I CAN BUILD ONE JUST LIKE THIS.
SO, THAT IS WHERE IT ALL STARTED AND THEN IT BECOMES A PASSION AND THEN IT BECOMES AN ADDICTION, SO THAT IS ALL I THOUGHT ABOUT FOR FIVE OR SIX YEARS.
FINALLY, I GOT TO A POINT WHERE I WAS FEELING CONFIDENT IN WHAT I WAS DOING.
A LOT OF IT WAS MY TRIAL AND ERROR OF LEARNING THE PROCESS OF BUILDING.
MY DAD SAYS IT IS THE BARE WAY, WHICH IS THE HARD WAY INSTEAD OF GOING TO SCHOOL AND LEARNING, MAKING A LOT OF MISTAKES.
THEY ARE ALL BASED ON OLD GIBSON, GUILD, MARTIN, ALL OF THE OLD GUITARS THAT I LIKED.
THEY ARE MY INTERPRETATION OF THOSE GUITARS.
THERE IS ALMOST 300 PROCESSES IN BUILD AGGIE TAR.
TAR -- BUILDING A GUITAR.
THE COMBINATIONS ARE LIMITLESS.
NOW, AFTER10 GUITARS, I GOT TO THE POINT THE LAST THREE OR FOUR YEARS, I KIND OF KNOW BY WORKING WITH THAT WOOD FOR UP TO THREE MONTHS, I KNOW WHAT IT IS GOING TO SOUND LIKE.
IT'S COMING OUT LIKE I WANT IT.
NOW, BACK 12, 13 YEARS AGO, IT BLEW ME AWAY WHEN YOU STRING IT UP AND STRUM IT.
GOSH, YOU KNOW, OR EWW.
[ LAUGHTER ] BUT THAT IS PART OF THE PROCESS AFTER BUILDING SO MUCH THAT YOU KIND OF KNOW WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN.
EVERY INDIVIDUAL WHO BUILDS HAS THEIR OWN DIFFERENT PROCESS OF BUILDING.
IT'S NOT LIKE IN A FACTORY.
IT IS A NOT LINEAR PROCESS.
IT IS WHAT I LIKE TO DO AT THAT MOMENT.
IT'S JUST TWO DIFFERENT BUSINESSES ALMOST.
BUILDING A SPEC GUITAR, WHICH IS WHAT I WANT AND THEN BUILDING SOMEONE FOR SOMEBODY IS MAKING SURE THEY ARE GOING TO BE HAPPY.
I BUILD A SPEC GUITAR, IT IS ON ME.
A LOT OF PEOPLE COME TO ME FOR A CUSTOM GUITAR AND THEY HAVE IN MIND WHAT THEY HAVE SEEN IN A PICTURE OR THEY HAVE SEEN SOMEBODY ELSE ON STAGE PLAYING, AND IT MAY BE TOTALLY DIFFERENT FROM WHAT THEY REALLY WANT.
SOMETIMES, YOU HAVE TO CONVINCE THEM WHAT THEY WANT IS NOT WHAT THEY REALLY NEED.
WHEN YOU HAVE GONE THROUGH THIS WHOLE PROCESS OF THREE MONTHS OF TRYING TO CREATE AN INSTRUMENT, WHEN YOU HAVE FINALLY STRUNG IT UP AND YOU THINK IT SOUNDS GOOD, THEN WHEN YOU PUT NET THE HANDS OF A COMPETENT, PROFESSIONAL MUSICIAN AND YOU SIT IN FRONT OF THEM AND LISTEN, AND IT COMES OUT THE WAY YOU WANTED AND THE PERSON SAYS THIS IS GREAT THAT'S IT.
THAT IS WHAT IT IS ALL ABOUT.
