Michael Agnew was shot dead this morning.
[distorted sobbing] [dramatic music] TV REPORTER: ...man, who was shot dead shortly before eight this morning has been named: Michael Agnew, a high-profile barrister, was killed in his own home, in front of his wife.
[music intensifies] [heavy breathing] [thunder] [dramatic music continues] What's going on?
I was just on my way to see him.
No.
No way.
But how can he be dead?
[shoes scuffing on floor] Who exactly knows, Cushla?
CUSHLA: Nobody.
They'd better not.
Now, pull yourself together and get back behind that bar.
I really think that I need to go home.
Are you joking me?
[Cushla sobs softly] Are you joking me?
You're gonna walk in there as if someone you barely knew died.
- I can't do this.
- You can and you will.
Come on.
You can and you will.
[Cushla crying] [indistinct TV chatter] [glasses clink] ["Old Note" by Lisa O'Neill] [sobbing] MICHAEL: I love you.
[retches] ♪ The wind whistled you in behind the springtime ♪ ♪ Float, Old Note, new among my mind ♪ ♪ You hold the note, the note just moves to move man ♪ ♪ Let go the note and so move everything ♪ GINA: Is there something you wanna tell me, Cushla?
♪ I can't come to quantify the feelin' ♪ ♪ I was walkin' home half in the dreamin' ♪ ♪ The things that I was thinkin' I was singin' ♪ ♪ The wind whistled you in behind the springin' ♪ ♪ A star ran rings around the star before me ♪ ♪ And spun and swooped and sank and rocked beneath me ♪ [wind blowing] ♪ And mirrored what I've carried since I met me ♪ ♪ And shot me back into the ground below me ♪ ♪ And there I met another note long-buried ♪ Argh!
♪ And sat upon its shoulders was a memory ♪ ♪ A hum, but see, above me's gone so noisy ♪ ♪ I almost think I do not recognize me ♪ [doorbell rings] [door opens] Hi.
[song continues] It was him, wasn't it?
[song fades out] CUSHLA: They shot him.
[sobs softly] GERRY: Easy, hey.
There's nothing you can do about any of that now.
Just, just... I keep playing it over and over in my head.
I remember everything.
I remember the first time we looked at each other.
[sobs] And I poured him a whiskey.
Hey, hey, hey.
[Cushla sobs] You're so good to me, Gerry.
It ain't me, babe.
[Cushla cries] ["My Autumn's Done Come" by Lee Hazlewood] [Cushla whimpers] ♪ Kiss all the pretty one's goodbye ♪ ♪ Give every one a penny that cries ♪ I tried to kiss you that night because... I thought it was what I was meant to do.
The man at the lough.
I couldn't believe you saw me.
You know, I'd nearly done it a thousand times.
I hoped that the feelings would go away, but they never did.
That night you saw me; I'd finally found the courage to just go and meet someone.
Why didn't you just tell me?

Michael said, "We must find the courage to choose freedom over fear."
And look where that got him.

[water running] [whirring] Oh, he turned up out of the blue with a bag of washing, sitting upstairs with a bake on him, smoking fags.
CUSHLA: Sorry I missed your last day, Davy.
I wish I could be in your class again next year, Miss.
I wish I could be your teacher again.
Are you alright?

[sigh] [door closes] [distant dog barking] [children playing in distance] [seagulls squawking] I was thinking.

[tense music] [engine revving loudly] [tires screech] OFFICER: Hold it right there, McGeown.
You're under arrest for the murder of Michael Agnew.
BETTY: What are you doing?
[screaming] Tommy!

CUSHLA: Gerry, is this something to do with me?
Tommy heard me say Michael's name on the phone, and now he's being lifted for his murder.
GERRY: The RUC have to be seen to be doing something, so they lifted a load of likely lads.
Tommy being lifted has nothing to do with you.
How can you be sure?
Who else knows?
I need the truth, now.
I was teaching him and four of his friends Irish.
EAMONN: Are you joking?
I'm not.
EAMONN: Where?
One of their houses on the Malone Road.
EAMONN: **** me.

[engine starts] RADIO IN CAR: ...man shot dead by... GINA: Are yous right?
CUSHLA: Yeah.
I hate being late for that lot.
RADIO REPORTER: The Provisional IRA has claimed responsibility for the murder of prominent barrister Michael Agnew, whose funeral takes place later today.
GINA: There you go.
[sighs] GINA: Bloody mortifying, so it is, having to show up to a funeral knowing our lot did it.
[somber music] CUSHLA: Move in there, Fidel.
MINISTER: Michael was best known for the work... [minister's voice echoes distantly] ...surpassing his love for rugby and the arts was his love for his son Dermot, his wife Joanna.
He was of course loved by them... [minister's voice fades] [woman vocalizing mournful melody] ["When I Move to the Sky" by Lonnie Donegan] ♪ I travel with Jesus ♪ ♪ Honey, most of my life ♪ ♪ Yes, I travel ♪ ♪ On the land and the sea ♪ [woman sobbing] ♪ But I am thinking ♪ ♪ Last trip ♪ ♪ Off to Heaven ♪ ♪ On up high ♪ ♪ That will be ♪ ♪ The last move ♪ ♪ For me ♪ [bells tolling] [crows cawing] Are you okay?

[wistful piano melody] What was all that carry on about between you and Victor McIntyre?

He was at the Irish classes.

[indistinct chatter] [glasses clink] Hello again, Miss Lavery.
[tense music] Mr.

- CUSHLA: What?

[angry crowd clamoring] [glass shattering] [commotion] [objects crashing and banging] Davy!
- Davy!
- DAVY: Miss Lavery!
CUSHLA: Everyone in the car!
[glass shattering] [commotion] [sirens wailing] [screaming] Get in the car!
Murdering Fenian bastards!

[screaming, sobbing] [tense drone] [inaudible shouting] [muffled thuds] [loud muffled thuds] [glass shattering] BETTY: The window broke and the bottle smashed on the hearth.
The flames went all across the carpet.
They went up the side of the settee, where Davy and Mandy were sitting.
We had to tip Seamie's chair back to haul him away.
And all the while I could hear them cheering.
Can you believe they've charged Tommy with shooting that barrister?
That's why they burned you out?
BETTY: It's not like they needed much of an excuse.
They've, um... they've charged him?
For the actual murder?
Aye.
Well, a quick win for the RUC looks good.
[cup rattling] It doesn't matter whether he did it or not.
Right.
Let's get everyone to bed.
Betty and Seamus, you can have Eamonn's room.
The kids can be in the spare room.

Cushla, come on.

[unsteady breathing] [bottle cap rattles] [breathing shakily] [sighs] [breathes heavily] [Gina exhales] What is everybody gonna think when they hear we've taken in that family?

GINA: Oh, dear god.
[Gina sighs] [birds chirping] GERRY: Give Davy a hug from me when he wakes up and tell your mummy I was asking.
Look, I have to go get this ferry, but here, follow me out as soon as possible.
[car approaching] [engine stops] DISCO PEELER: Tell me about your relationship with Michael Agnew.
CUSHLA: He came into the bar sometimes.
DISCO PEELER: You ever meet him outside the bar?
CUSHLA: He asked me to join an Irish language conversation group, so I went a few times.
To the home of James and Penelope Fielding?
CUSHLA: Yeah.
Did you ever meet him elsewhere?
No.
Who took those?
Were you in a sexual relationship with Michael Agnew?

I presume you've got a really good one.
Jesus ******.
Your car was seen outside the house on the night of May 27th.
Michael Agnew was shot dead at his family home.

The man charged with the murder of Michael Agnew has been named as Thomas McGeown.
An eyewitness has come forward... [radio clicks off] [tense note plays] BETTY: He's just a boy.
[door knocker bangs] EAMONN: You need to get rid of them, now.
- Want us to get burned out?
- CUSHLA: Listen.
CUSHLA: Eamonn, please.
EAMONN: You've already been lifted by the peelers.
CUSHLA: Eamonn, I didn't know Tommy had been charged.
I don't care if you didn't know, they have to leave now.
Eamonn, would you just listen to me?
I just found the number for the housing executive.
They're not gonna be here long, just a couple of days.
They leave now you stupid ****.
GINA: We need them gone.
Just do what he says.
Eamonn doesn't need to know about Gallagher.
We'll go to the barracks, get the soldiers barred.
[tense tone] [engine stops] [sobs softly] [rapid ticking] They never found a house.
He's gone into foster care, so has Mandy.
GINA: Oh, Jesus.

I asked Bradley to help them, and he reported them to the social.
It is not your fault.

Enough of this.
[Gina sighs] Feels like it's all my fault.
That peeler was right.

As Eamonn said, they like to leave you rattled.

[Gina humming] Do you want a wee tea?

[birds chirping] [door knocker bangs] Cushla.
I was wondering how you were.
Thank you for dropping that rhubarb round, Sergeant Reid.
Well, I promised your Daddy I'd keep an eye on you.

He didn't know, so... just the sort of ***** thing that happens here all the time.

[phone ringing] GINA: Oh, ignore it.
It's probably Eamonn reporting on Marian's constipation.
[Cushla laughs] Let me give you a hand with these.
[phone ringing] GINA: There.

[phone ringing] [phone ringing] [tense music] [breathes heavily] [phone continues ringing] [sirens wailing] [commotion] CUSHLA: Eamonn, what's going on?
Is everyone out?
EAMONN: I told yous not to come.
CUSHLA: Jesus, Eamonn.
[sirens wailing] [indistinct shouting] [abrupt silence] [explosion] [panting] [debris clatters to the ground] [sighs] [gentle, contemplative piano music] MAN: Get out of that, go on, clear off.
[seagulls squawking] [water dripping] [broken glass crunches underfoot] I am so sorry.
This is all my fault.
Not really, it's this ****** up place.
[Cushla sighs] Where else does being kind get you bombed?

At least Fidel gave us enough warning time to get out.
Fidel?
Aye.
Jimmy told me earlier; it was that lot.

[melancholy piano music] But I couldn't tell him.

[Cushla chuckles] Miss Lavery.
I haven't been "Miss Lavery" for a long while.
